Make your cat’s water fresh, clean, easy to reach, and available in a setup your cat will actually use. Offer water in more than one accessible place, try different bowls or locations, and consider a fountain only if your cat seems interested in moving water. A cat’s hydration also includes moisture in food, so drinking less from a bowl does not always mean something is wrong. A sudden change in drinking or signs of illness call for veterinary advice.
How much water does a cat need?
Cornell’s general guideline is about 4 ounces of water per 5 pounds of lean body weight per day. It is not an individual prescription: a cat’s needs and bowl drinking depend on factors including food moisture and health. Wet food can contain up to 80% water, so a cat eating wet food may drink less directly from a bowl while still taking in water through meals. These figures come from Cornell Feline Health Center’s hydration guidance, last updated in 2021 (Cornell: Hydration).

What can make a water source more inviting?
Keep water clean and accessible
Provide fresh water in a quiet, easy-to-reach place, away from the litter box. Wash and rinse bowls daily to prevent buildup. If other pets may block access or your cat has to cross a busy area to reach water, add another source in a place the cat can comfortably approach. VCA also notes that cats can differ in their preference for water temperature (VCA: How to Get Your Cat to Drink More Water).

There is no universally best bowl. Experiment with a different location, fill level, shape, or material, and notice which setup your cat chooses. VCA suggests trying glass, metal, or ceramic rather than plastic; this is an option to test, not a guarantee that a particular material will appeal to every cat. Keep the trial simple enough that you can tell whether your cat is using the new setup.

Consider a fountain if your cat likes moving water
Some cats are attracted to moving water, while others prefer a still bowl. A fountain is an optional experiment, not a necessary upgrade. Introduce it gradually, keep it disassembled and clean it regularly, and replace its filter according to the manufacturer’s directions. Cornell likewise notes that fountain preferences vary among cats (Cornell: Hydration; International Cat Care: Encouraging your cat to drink).
Can food help increase water intake?
Because wet food supplies moisture, offering it as part of your cat’s diet can contribute to water intake. You can also ask your veterinarian whether adding a little water to food is appropriate. Do not leave a cat without food because it refuses a moistened meal; return to food it will eat and seek veterinary guidance if feeding is a concern.

A small amount of tuna water or low-sodium chicken broth may tempt some cats, but flavoring water is not a first step or a substitute for clean water. VCA’s kitten guidance advises consulting a veterinarian before adding broth or other flavors. Check with your veterinarian before changing an individual cat’s diet or adding flavor, particularly if the cat has a health condition (VCA: Nutrition – General Feeding Guidelines for Cats).

Contact your veterinarian promptly if your cat suddenly drinks much more or less than usual, or if you are concerned about dehydration. Cornell lists lethargy, weakness, poor appetite, dry or tacky gums or other mucous membranes, and, in more severe cases, sunken eyes as possible dehydration signs. Vomiting and diarrhea can increase fluid loss; illnesses including kidney disease, diabetes, and hyperthyroidism can also affect hydration. Do not rely on a bowl or fountain change when your cat seems unwell. Cornell’s guidance recommends contacting a veterinarian when dehydration is a concern, and VCA notes that a sudden change in drinking can indicate illness (Cornell: Hydration; VCA: How to Get Your Cat to Drink More Water).
