A homemade diet can be formulated for a cat, but “fresh” does not mean complete and balanced—and it does not have to mean raw. The safest approach is to have a qualified veterinary professional formulate a diet for your individual cat, follow the recipe and its supplements exactly, and review it as needs change.
1. Start with your cat, not a template
A cat’s nutritional and calorie needs depend on factors such as age, health, activity, and other individual circumstances. A recipe that suits one cat may not suit another. Begin by discussing your cat’s needs with your veterinarian rather than adapting a general recipe.

2. Get a qualified formulation
The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) recommends that owners choosing a home-prepared diet consult a board-certified veterinary nutritionist. Ask your primary veterinarian for a referral or guidance on finding an appropriate professional. The nutritionist can formulate a plan for your cat and account for relevant medical or life-stage needs. AAHA’s home-prepared diet guidance explains this recommendation.

AAHA reports that veterinary studies evaluating recipes from books and websites found that most did not provide complete and balanced nutrition, including some recipes written by veterinarians. A list of plausible ingredients—or a recipe described as “natural” or “fresh”—is not proof that it meets a cat’s nutrient needs. AAHA discusses the recipe evidence.
#1 Best Overall
- Clean Label Project Certified – Independently tested for over 100 contaminants to help ensure cleaner, safer food for your pet
- Healthy and Natural Fresh Cat Food
- High-quality Nutrition from U.S. Farm Raised Chicken and Beef
- Gently Steam Cooked to Lock in Essential Nutrients

4. Account for feline-specific nutrients
Cats have species-specific nutritional requirements, including a need for taurine. A meat-based recipe or a meal made from human foods does not automatically provide every required nutrient in the right amounts. Merck Veterinary Manual cautions against assuming that a home-formulated diet will meet these needs without appropriate expertise. See Merck’s overview of proper nutrition for cats.
5. Follow the formulated recipe exactly
Ingredient quantities and preparation instructions are part of the formulation. Measure and prepare the food as directed, rather than estimating amounts or changing the method. A digital kitchen scale may help with accurate measurement, but careful measuring cannot make an unbalanced recipe nutritionally complete.

6. Keep the specified supplements
A home-prepared plan may require vitamin, mineral, or amino acid supplements. Do not leave them out, change their amount, or substitute another product on your own. The exact supplements are part of the nutrition plan, not optional extras. AAHA and VCA both emphasize following the formulated plan and its supplementation guidance. See AAHA’s guidance and VCA’s home-prepared diet guidance.

Changing or omitting an ingredient can alter the diet’s nutrient balance and may cause deficiencies or excesses. If an ingredient is unavailable, your cat will not eat it, or you have another reason to change the recipe, ask the formulator to approve the substitution and specify the amount. VCA explains the risk of unapproved recipe changes in its home-prepared diet guidance.

8. Keep “fresh” separate from “raw”
Freshly prepared food can be cooked. Raw meat is a separate feeding choice, not a requirement of a homemade or fresh diet. Merck warns that raw meat can pose health risks, and the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) recommends evaluating risks associated with raw-meat diets. Discuss food preparation and safe handling with your veterinarian; do not assume that raw is healthier or necessary. See Merck’s nutrition guidance and WSAVA’s nutritional assessment guidelines.
9. Recheck the recipe over time
AAHA recommends updating a home-prepared diet annually with a board-certified veterinary nutritionist; supplements and recommendations can change. Contact your veterinarian sooner if your cat’s health, weight, activity, or other needs change. A recipe that was appropriate earlier may need reassessment. AAHA’s guidance covers annual updates.

10. Keep water and monitoring in the routine
Make sure your cat always has access to clean, fresh water, as Cornell Feline Health Center advises in its feeding guidance. Monitor your cat’s body condition and raise feeding concerns with your veterinarian. Water access supports basic care; it does not replace a nutritionally balanced diet.

How to weigh homemade food against commercial food
The meaningful choice is between a properly formulated home-prepared diet and a commercial food represented as complete and balanced—not between “fresh” and “bad.” Consider these questions with your veterinarian:
- Nutritional adequacy: Is the diet’s completeness and balance substantiated, or is it simply a recipe with appealing ingredients?
- Food safety: Is it cooked or raw, and what risks and handling steps apply?
- Practicality: Can you reliably source, measure, prepare, store, and serve the food as directed, without unapproved substitutions?
- Your cat’s needs: Does the plan account for your cat’s health, age, and other individual factors?
- Ongoing support: Can you return to the formulator for questions and timely updates?
Cornell notes that preparing a nutritionally balanced homemade diet is difficult and generally favors balanced commercial food unless a veterinarian recommends otherwise. VCA reports that its source found no published clinical trials demonstrating a significant long-term health benefit of balanced homemade diets over commercial food in healthy pets. That does not establish that every homemade diet is unsuitable; it means a claimed advantage should not be assumed. Read Cornell’s feeding guidance and VCA’s discussion of natural approaches to feeding.
