When a kitten cannot nurse, use commercial kitten milk replacer and call a veterinarian. VCA provides one emergency mixture for temporary use—not four validated recipes or a regular diet.

If a kitten cannot nurse, use a commercial kitten milk replacer and contact a veterinarian promptly for product and feeding instructions. Homemade mixtures are not established as nutritionally equivalent, and the available veterinary guidance supports only one mixture for temporary emergency use—not four recipes or a routine diet.

What to feed a kitten that cannot nurse

Choose a commercial kitten milk replacer designed for kittens, and ask a veterinarian which product and feeding schedule suit the kitten’s age, weight, and condition. VCA states that “Commercial kitten milk replacers are recommended as they are superior to cow’s milk and homemade mixtures” (VCA, Feeding Orphaned Kittens, last updated February 4, 2025). ASPCA likewise advises contacting a veterinarian for product and feeding recommendations (ASPCA, Cat Nutrition Tips).

Do not use ordinary cow’s milk as a substitute. It is nutritionally inferior to a mother cat’s milk, and it may cause stomach upset and diarrhea in some kittens. Goat milk is not a regular replacement either: VCA describes pasteurized goat milk only as an emergency measure while obtaining kitten replacer, not as regular kitten food (VCA, Raising Kittens).

The one emergency mixture described by VCA

VCA’s post-operative guidance for cats gives one mixture to use “In an emergency” until a product designed for kittens can be purchased (VCA, Caesarean Sections in Cats – Post Operative Instructions). It lists:

  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon corn or canola oil
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 3 egg yolks, without the whites; pasteurized eggs are preferred

Blend the ingredients until uniform. This is a specific source’s short-term emergency instruction, not a validated complete diet or a routine feeding plan. The available sources do not establish four clinically validated homemade recipes or show that this mixture is nutritionally equivalent to kitten milk replacer. Get a kitten-specific product and veterinary guidance as soon as possible.

VCA’s same page gives an amount of 1 oz (30 mL) per ¼ lb (⅛ kg) of kitten weight every 24 hours for this emergency mixture. That figure belongs to this interim instruction; do not transfer it to a commercial replacer. For the replacer, follow its label and ask a veterinarian to tailor amounts and timing.

How much and how often to feed

Feeding needs depend on the kitten’s age, weight, health, and the product being used. VCA gives general energy guidance of 15 kcal per 100 g of body weight per day for days 1–3, 20 kcal per 100 g for days 4–6, and up to 25 kcal per 100 g after day 6 (VCA, Feeding Orphaned Kittens, 2025). These are guidance figures, not a substitute for the specific replacer’s directions or veterinary advice. Have a veterinarian help translate the kitten’s needs into a feeding plan.

How to bottle-feed safely

  1. Prepare and warm the replacer. Follow the package directions. VCA advises warming it to approximately 100°F (38°C), without overheating.
  2. Check the nipple flow. It should release one drop at a time. If formula runs quickly, a kitten can inhale it; aspiration can lead to pneumonia or death.
  3. Position the kitten correctly. Hold the kitten horizontally with its head in a neutral position. Do not feed it on its back or force formula into the mouth of a weak kitten. Ask a veterinarian to demonstrate an appropriate alternative if the kitten cannot suckle.
  4. Feed calmly and carefully. Cold formula, overfeeding, and feeding too quickly can cause complications. Follow the product instructions and the schedule agreed with the veterinarian.
  5. Store and clean safely. Refrigerate prepared formula and make only what can be used within 24 hours. Discard formula that has been at room temperature for one hour. Clean and boil bottles and nipples between uses.

Kittens younger than about three weeks may need help eliminating after feeds. VCA describes gently stimulating the area with a warm, moist cloth or cotton ball.

When to call a veterinarian urgently

Seek prompt veterinary advice if the kitten cries excessively, fails to gain weight, has diarrhea, seems weak, or has difficulty feeding. These can signal illness or inadequate intake, and a weak kitten that cannot suckle needs professional guidance rather than force-feeding.

When kittens can begin weaning

Weaning is gradual, not an abrupt switch from milk to solid food. VCA says it should begin around three to four weeks. ASPCA describes moving through kitten-food gruel, then lightly moistened food around five to six weeks, with unmoistened kitten food by eight to ten weeks. Ask your veterinarian how to adapt that transition to the kitten’s growth and health.
