Yes—but rethink “type” as a starting preference, not a rule for choosing or a fix for shelter overcrowding. A better match comes from the individual dog’s observed behavior, care needs and compatibility with your household, rather than size stereotypes or a breed label guessed from appearance.
What do shelter numbers say about capacity?
National trends show both progress and continuing pressure, but they describe different periods. Shelter Animals Count’s 2025 annual report recorded 5.2 million dogs and cats achieving a live community outcome, nearly steady year over year, and shorter median stays from intake to adoption across every organization type. Its 2026 mid-year summary reported that, in the first half of 2026, 213,000 more animals entered shelters and rescues than left through reported outcomes. These national totals do not describe every local shelter, and the two reports should not be treated as one continuous measurement.

The 2026 summary also reported that adult dogs accounted for 236,000 animals—66% of dogs still in care and awaiting outcomes during that period. In an October 2026 release, ASPCA senior vice president of shelter services Christa Chadwick said the data showed “continued challenges with moving dogs out of care and into loving homes.” The numbers make the pressure on dogs clear, but they do not mean one particular adopter preference is responsible for it.
Do some dog sizes face different shelter outcomes?
Yes, in Shelter Animals Count’s first-half 2025 data, large dogs had longer median stays than small or medium dogs across all shelter organization types. Small and medium dogs had higher adoption and transfer rates; large dogs had higher return-to-owner rates and higher euthanasia rates. Large dogs made up 29% of stray dog intakes but 41% of pets returned to owners in that reporting period.

Those are group-level shelter outcomes, not a description of an individual dog’s temperament, trainability or suitability for a home. The higher return-to-owner share also shows why intake and reunification patterns matter alongside adoption. A large dog is not automatically difficult to place, and a small dog is not automatically an easy fit.
What should “the right type of dog” mean for your household?
It should mean a dog whose known needs fit the life you can reliably provide. Size can affect practical questions—such as available space, transport, handling and housing restrictions—but it cannot answer them on its own. Consider the specific dog’s energy, comfort with people or other animals, routine, medical or grooming needs, and behavior in settings relevant to your home. Ask shelter staff what they have observed and what is still unknown.

- Daily care: Be realistic about time for exercise, companionship, training, grooming and veterinary care. Ask about this dog’s routine and needs rather than relying on a broad label.
- People and animals at home: Discuss children, visitors, resident pets and any known sensitivities with shelter staff. A meeting and careful introduction can provide useful context, though neither guarantees how a dog will behave in every situation.
- Uncertainty: Shelter observations reflect what staff have been able to learn so far. Ask what is known, what has not been assessed and what support could help during a transition.
A useful decision is not “Which type is most adoptable?” but “Can we meet this particular dog’s needs, and does what we know suggest a reasonable fit?” If the answer depends on an assumption about breed or size, ask for more specific information before deciding.

Size and visible traits
A 2020 observational study by Trevathan-Minnis and colleagues modeled adoption patterns in a random sample of 4,500 U.S. shelter dogs. It found that adoption hazards were associated with phenotype and shelter region; in the sample, adopters favored puppies and smaller dogs. The effects associated with size, skull type and age changed with time in the shelter. This describes associations in the study, not proof that appearance caused an adoption outcome or that changing adopter preferences alone would resolve capacity.

Breed labels and profile descriptions
A 2025 experiment found that profile descriptions raised perceived adoptability overall, while breed labels lowered it overall in the experiment. Some effects varied by label, and participants did not all respond alike. The measured outcome was perceived adoptability—not completed adoptions in a nationwide field trial. A breed label on a shelter profile is not a substitute for verified ancestry, an assessment of an individual dog, or a conversation about that dog’s behavior and needs.
For adopters, the practical takeaway is to treat labels as limited information. Read the profile, but ask about the individual: what staff have seen, in what circumstances, and what remains uncertain. For shelters, clear descriptions grounded in observed behavior may help people understand a dog, but the cited experiment does not establish that relabeling will increase completed adoptions everywhere.

What can adopters do without choosing a dog solely to ease capacity?
- Start with your household’s non-negotiables. Identify real limits, such as housing rules, available time, care capacity and compatibility needs. Separate those constraints from preferences you could reconsider.
- Look at local listings with an open mind. Consider dogs outside your usual size or appearance preference only if their known needs could fit your life. Do not adopt a dog you cannot care for simply because a group has longer stays.
- Ask specific questions and meet the dog. Ask staff what behavior they have observed, what care the dog needs, how the dog responds to relevant situations, and where information is incomplete. Use the meeting to assess your own comfort and ask about introductions or transition support.
- Consider fostering if a permanent decision is not right yet. Ask the local organization whether it has a foster pathway and what support and commitment it involves. Availability and arrangements vary by organization.
- Plan for a successful transition. Discuss support with shelter staff before bringing a dog home, especially if you have questions about settling in or household introductions. A considered match can reduce avoidable mismatches, though no adoption outcome is guaranteed.
Why is adopter preference only one part of the capacity problem?
Shelter capacity also depends on how many animals arrive, how long they remain in care, whether lost pets are reunited with their families, and whether transfers, foster homes and placement resources are available. ASPCA guidance emphasizes managing populations within an organization’s capacity for care, supporting owners, using alternatives to shelter intake when appropriate, and maintaining strong adoption and placement programs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThat makes the response broader than persuading people to choose a different-looking dog. Supporting owners before surrender when appropriate, helping lost dogs return home, and making foster, transfer and humane placement pathways work can all contribute to reducing pressure. ASPCA president and CEO Matt Bershadker has described keeping pets in loving homes, removing barriers to adoption and returning lost pets to their families as ways to support animals and reduce shelter pressure.

For an adopter, the responsible version of “rethinking type” is to question assumptions while respecting your real limits. Be open to an individual dog you might previously have overlooked, but choose only when you can meet that dog’s needs. That approach broadens consideration without pretending that adopter taste alone can solve a system-wide capacity challenge.
