You can make worthwhile toys for pet rats from clean cardboard boxes, paper tubes, paper bags, egg cartons and plain paper. These materials support the behaviours rats need to express—hiding, chewing, foraging, shredding and exploring—without requiring a shopping trip. The safest approach is simple: remove tape and labels, avoid anything that can tangle around a limb, supervise the first use, and discard an item as soon as it becomes damaged or soiled.

DIY toys are enrichment, not a substitute for a suitable cage, dark refuges, digging and exercise opportunities, a balanced diet, or compatible rat companionship. Use the ideas below as a rotating set of activities and let each rat decide what it finds rewarding.

What makes a good DIY rat toy?

A useful homemade toy gives a rat a choice or a small problem to solve. A box can be a refuge and a chew object; a tube can turn dinner into a search; a paper bag can provide sound, texture and shredding. The point is not complexity. It is creating safe opportunities for natural behaviour.

RSPCA Australia describes enrichment in several categories: foraging, social, physical, sensory and occupational. In practical terms, a good rotation changes what the rat can do rather than presenting the same object every day. One session might emphasize hiding, another food-searching, and another nest-building.

A 2023 Veterinary Record expert-consultation paper identified 14 factors considered important and necessary for good pet-rat housing. That count is a housing framework, not a measured claim that a particular cardboard toy improves health. DIY objects work best inside that broader environment.

Prepare household materials safely

Before an item enters the cage or play area, make a quick safety check. Packaging that looks harmless to a person can contain adhesives, ink, strings or openings that trap a foot.

Material or feature Suitable use Checks before use
Plain cardboard box Hide, tunnel, maze or chewable shelter Remove tape and labels; ensure entrances have smooth, non-sharp edges and are large enough for the rat to leave freely.
Toilet-paper or paper-towel tube Foraging roll, tunnel or shredding object Use a clean, dry tube; remove any attached glue, plastic or sharp remnants.
Cardboard egg carton Food-search compartments Use a clean carton with no food residue, mold, staples or plastic coating.
Plain paper bag Rustling, exploring, shredding or holding a little hay or food Use paper, never a plastic bag; remove handles, string and adhesive labels.
Plain paper for nesting Manipulating and building a nest Avoid fluffy bedding and long, loose strands that can wrap around toes or limbs.
Known, untreated apple branch Chewing Only use wood known to be safe and pesticide-free; do not guess about an unknown tree or chemical exposure.

Inspect every homemade item for sharp cut edges, loose fragments, staples, exposed adhesive, small parts and strings. RSPCA UK warns that fluffy or thin-strand materials can tangle around a rat and cause serious injury. Remove an object immediately if it becomes wet with urine, contaminated with feces, moldy or chewed into hazardous pieces.

Six DIY toys and exactly how to make them

1. Cardboard box hide or mini-maze

What it provides: refuge, exploration and chewing. A box also lets a rat control when it is visible, which is important for an animal that needs secure hiding places.

  1. Choose a clean, dry cardboard box without tape, labels, staples or glossy plastic lamination.
  2. Cut one or more rat-sized entrances. Smooth or fold back any sharp edge; do not leave a flap that can fall and block the opening.
  3. For a maze, place two or more boxes so the rat can move between them, or cut doorways between adjoining boxes. Keep every route open and easy to reverse.
  4. Set the box in the cage or a secure play area and observe. Replace it when the cardboard is damp, heavily soiled or structurally unsafe.

Large cardboard tubes can also function as shelters. For a group, provide multiple refuges so one rat cannot monopolize the only dark space. RSPCA UK recommends that each rat have access to a safe, dark hiding place.

2. Paper-tube forage roll

What it provides: food searching, chewing and manipulation. Put a small amount of the rat’s normal food inside a clean toilet-paper or paper-towel tube. The rat must investigate and work through the paper to reach it.

  1. Check the tube for plastic film, wet spots, heavy printing or adhesive residue.
  2. Place a little of the regular ration inside. A modest treat can be used, but treats should remain a small part of the diet.
  3. Fold or gently crimp the ends enough to keep the contents from falling out immediately; do not create a sealed plug that a rat cannot safely dismantle.
  4. Offer it on a stable surface and remove remaining food if the tube becomes damp or dirty.

You can also leave one end open and hide the tube under loose, safe paper, turning the same object into a scent-and-search activity without making the rat fight a tightly packed package.

3. Egg-carton food search

What it provides: a simple foraging puzzle with several separate compartments. Expert-consultation housing guidance published in Veterinary Record specifically gives hiding food in a clean cardboard egg carton as an example.

  1. Use a clean cardboard carton; discard it if it has mold, raw egg residue, staples or a plastic coating.
  2. Place tiny portions of the normal diet in several cups. Leaving some cups empty makes the search less predictable.
  3. Set the carton flat so it cannot tip onto a rat. For a more active version, place it in a secure play area where the rat can circle it.
  4. Remove the carton when it is chewed through, wet or contaminated.

Because the food is part of the daily ration, this activity can add work without adding a large number of calories.

4. Paper-bag explore-and-shred activity

What it provides: rustling sounds, scent exploration, shredding and optional foraging. Use a plain paper bag, never a plastic one.

  1. Remove handles, string, adhesive labels and any metal or plastic fasteners.
  2. Open the bag fully and place it where the rat cannot become trapped beneath other cage furniture.
  3. Add a little hay or a small amount of food if that suits the individual rat. Keep the opening accessible.
  4. Watch the first session. If the rat tears off and swallows large pieces, or if the bag collapses into a hazard, remove it and offer loose paper instead.

Some rats will rush into a new bag; others will avoid it. Leave it nearby and allow investigation on the rat’s schedule rather than pushing the animal inside.

5. Shredding and nesting paper

What it provides: nest construction and a safe way to manipulate a soft, disposable material. Offer suitable plain paper in loose pieces that a rat can carry and arrange.

Avoid fluffy bedding and long, thin fibers. Those strands can wrap around toes, feet or limbs and constrict them. Replace paper that is wet or heavily soiled, and check the nest regularly for hidden food that has spoiled.

To vary the activity, put paper in two locations—one near a hide and one in an open area—so the rat can choose where to build. Nesting material should complement, not block, entrances, ventilation or access to food and water.

6. Safe branch chew

What it provides: chewing and texture variety. PetMD’s enrichment guidance mentions small pieces of apple branches from a pesticide-free tree.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Use only wood that you can positively identify as safe and untreated.
  2. Reject branches exposed to pesticides, road spray, paint, preservatives, mold or unknown chemicals.
  3. Remove dirt and let the piece dry fully. Check for sharp splinters, nails, wire and loose bark.
  4. Offer a small piece and inspect it after chewing. Discard it if it splinters or becomes contaminated.

Do not substitute an unknown branch simply because it resembles apple wood. If the source or treatment history is uncertain, choose cardboard or paper instead.

Choose a toy by the behaviour you want to encourage

The table below helps match an idea to a practical goal. “Low” setup effort means cutting or placing the material; it does not remove the need for inspection and supervision.

DIY option Main behaviours Setup effort Most important caution
Box hide or maze Hide, explore, chew Low to moderate Entrances must remain open, smooth and large enough for escape.
Paper-tube forage roll Search, chew, manipulate Low Use only a little food and remove a damp or dismantled tube.
Egg-carton search Forage, solve a simple problem Low Carton must be clean and stable, with no staples or mold.
Paper bag Explore, hear, shred, forage Low Paper only; remove handles and prevent collapse or entrapment.
Nesting paper Carry, shred, nest Very low No fluffy or long, loose fibers.
Known apple branch Chew Moderate Wood must be positively identified, untreated and pesticide-free.

Introduce novelty without forcing interaction

A rat may approach a new object, retreat, or ignore it at first. Novelty can be unsettling, so place the item near a familiar hide rather than chasing the rat with it or putting the animal inside. Leave enough time for voluntary investigation.

  1. Offer one new object at a time so you can tell what the rat accepts and what causes avoidance.
  2. Keep the cage layout stable while adding the toy; too many simultaneous changes make it harder to identify a problem.
  3. Observe body language, appetite, movement and normal social behaviour during the first sessions.
  4. Rotate objects after they lose interest, become damaged or interfere with cleaning. Rotation creates variety without filling the habitat with clutter.

Individual preference matters. One rat may spend hours shredding a bag while another prefers a dark box. Engagement is voluntary; a toy is not a test the animal must pass.

Safety checks and common failure points

The rat ignores the toy

Leave it available for a while, move it closer to a familiar refuge, or try a different texture. Do not add increasingly tempting treats if that would unbalance the diet. Some rats simply prefer another activity.

The toy becomes a toilet or food dump

Remove wet or contaminated cardboard and paper promptly. Move food-search toys away from the sleeping area and use smaller portions so leftovers are easy to find.

Edges become sharp or pieces come loose

Discard the object rather than trimming it repeatedly once the structure is weakened. A new box or tube costs less than treating a cut mouth or trapped toe.

Material catches on a limb

Remove the toy immediately and check the rat’s foot, toes and skin. Do not use fluffy bedding, thin strands, string, mesh or plastic bags in an attempt to make a more exciting toy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Several rats compete for one hide

Add more than one refuge and spread activities across the habitat. Multiple dark shelters give animals choices and reduce pressure around a single entrance.

DIY toys do not replace the habitat

Rats need more than objects to chew. Provide a safe enclosure with complex usable space, exercise opportunities, digging or other substrate-based activity where appropriate, feeding areas, refuges and protection from injury. Keep water and the regular diet available, and maintain suitable social contact with compatible rats.

RSPCA UK emphasizes safe, dark hiding places, while the 2023 Veterinary Record guidance treats housing as a set of connected needs rather than a toy checklist. A cardboard maze cannot compensate for inadequate space, no refuge, poor hygiene or isolation.

As Sandra C. Mitchell, DVM, DABVP, wrote in PetMD on April 9, 2019: “However, you don’t have to spend a lot of money if you don’t want to.” The practical advantage of household materials is that you can replace them often, tailor them to an individual rat and remove them quickly when they are no longer safe.

A simple weekly rotation

There is no required schedule, but a rotation prevents the cage from becoming either monotonous or overcrowded. For example:

  • Day 1: a clean box hide with two open entrances.
  • Day 2: a paper-tube forage roll using part of the normal ration.
  • Day 3: loose nesting paper and a quick inspection of existing hides.
  • Day 4: an egg-carton search with several empty compartments.
  • Day 5: a paper bag for supervised exploring and shredding.
  • Day 6: a known, untreated apple-wood chew if the branch remains sound.
  • Day 7: cleaning, removal of damaged items and a return to the rat’s preferred safe refuges.

Adjust the pattern to the individual animals, cage design and cleaning routine. The goal is a safe choice of behaviours—not a fixed calendar.
