Horse Teeth Problems: 12 Signs It’s Time for a Professional Dental Check

Dropping feed, chewing difficulty, weight loss, head tossing, bit resistance, foul odor, bleeding, discharge, and swelling can all justify a professional horse dental examination—even when a horse seems comfortable.

Call an equine veterinarian for a dental examination when your horse starts dropping feed, struggles to chew, drools, loses condition, passes coarse feed in manure, changes how it carries its head or accepts the bit, performs poorly, or develops mouth odor, bleeding, nasal discharge, or swelling around the face and jaw. These changes can be associated with dental disease, but none proves a particular diagnosis by itself.

Routine examinations still matter when a horse appears comfortable. The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) says oral examinations should be part of an annual veterinary physical examination. Its 2026 owner guidance recommends a thorough dental examination at least once a year for mature horses and twice a year for horses aged 2 to 5, with the individual schedule adjusted by the attending veterinarian.

12 signs your horse should have its teeth checked

Horses often hide discomfort, and dental problems may produce subtle or nonspecific changes. Watch for patterns rather than trying to identify a condition from one symptom. A veterinarian can examine the whole horse, obtain a history, and decide whether dental treatment, other medical work, or both are needed.

1. Dropping feed or “quidding”

Partly chewed balls or wads of hay and grass falling from the mouth are commonly called quids. You may see them on the ground, in a feed tub, or caught around the lips. A horse may also let grain or soaked feed spill while eating. This can happen when sharp or painful areas make normal chewing difficult. Arrange a dental check rather than assuming the horse is simply being messy.

2. Difficulty chewing

Longer eating times, repeated pauses, chewing on one side, or visible effort to break down hay can indicate oral discomfort. Some horses select softer feed or leave coarse stems behind. Difficulty chewing can also have causes outside the teeth, so describe exactly what you observe and how long it has been happening to the veterinarian.

3. Excessive salivation or drooling

More saliva than usual, wet hair around the mouth, or strings of saliva hanging from the lips deserve attention when they are new or persistent. Salivation may accompany irritation or difficulty manipulating feed. Do not try to flush, probe, or medicate the mouth yourself; a professional examination is needed to determine the source.

4. Large or undigested feed particles in manure

Noticeably coarse fibers, whole grains, or other large feed pieces in manure can mean that food was not adequately broken down before swallowing. Check more than one manure pile because diet and normal variation affect appearance. If the change is consistent, report the feed type, recent diet changes, and any eating difficulty when booking the examination.

5. Loss of weight or body condition

Unexplained weight loss, a prominent topline, or a gradual decline in body condition may reflect inadequate intake or poor chewing. Dental disease is only one possible explanation, alongside systemic illness, parasites, feed problems, or management changes. A veterinarian can combine a physical examination with an oral assessment instead of treating weight loss as a dental diagnosis.

6. Head tilting, tossing, or shaking

A horse that tilts, tosses, or shakes its head while eating or being ridden may be signaling discomfort. Note whether the movement occurs with hay, grain, grazing, bridling, exercise, or particular rein contact. These behaviors have many possible causes, including tack, musculoskeletal, neurologic, and environmental issues, but AAEP owner guidance lists them as reasons to consider a dental check.

7. Resistance to the bridle or bit

Backing away when bridled, opening the mouth, pulling against the reins, evading contact, or becoming unusually difficult to handle around the bit can be associated with oral pain. First ensure the bridle and bit fit correctly and that handling has not changed. Even when equipment appears suitable, a new or worsening response warrants a veterinary assessment rather than a stronger bit or more force.

8. Tongue lolling or unusual tongue behavior

A tongue hanging out, repeatedly moving across the lips, or being held differently from normal is a change worth recording. Compare the behavior at rest, during feeding, and under saddle. It may be related to oral discomfort, but it is not specific enough to identify a dental problem without examination.

9. Reduced performance

A horse that slows, refuses, shortens its stride, resists transitions, or no longer works comfortably may have a dental issue among several possible causes. Performance changes are especially important when they appear with head movements, bit resistance, or feeding changes. Have the veterinarian evaluate the horse broadly rather than assuming that floating the teeth will solve every performance problem.

10. Foul mouth odor or blood

A persistent bad smell from the mouth, blood on feed, blood around the lips, or blood noticed during routine handling is abnormal enough to discuss promptly with an equine veterinarian. Odor and bleeding can arise from different oral or non-oral conditions. Avoid putting fingers into an unfamiliar horse’s mouth or attempting to locate a wound with improvised tools.

11. Nasal discharge

New discharge from one or both nostrils, especially when it is recurrent or accompanied by eating changes, should prompt a call. Dental and sinus problems can overlap anatomically, but nasal discharge also has respiratory and other causes. Tell the veterinarian which nostril is affected, what the discharge looks like, and whether coughing, fever, or reduced appetite is present.

12. Swelling of the face, jaw, or mouth

A lump, asymmetry, or swelling around the cheek, jaw, gums, or other mouth tissues needs professional evaluation. Sudden enlargement, marked pain, bleeding, or difficulty eating makes the call more urgent. Do not squeeze a swelling, lance it, or give medication without veterinary direction; the location and cause cannot be established safely from appearance alone.

Why a horse can have a dental problem without obvious signs

Some horses continue to eat and work despite significant oral changes. The AAEP’s 2022 professional proceedings describe dental problems as potentially unapparent or nonspecific. Horses may adapt their chewing, select softer forage, or tolerate discomfort until a problem is advanced. Looking at the front teeth or watching a horse eat is therefore not a reliable way to rule out disease.

A thorough professional examination is more than a quick glance. Modern assessment may include a general physical examination, sedation, a dental halter or head support, strong lighting, a mirror or oral endoscope, an explorer, and a periodontal probe. These are clinical materials and procedures, not a do-it-yourself checklist. Sedation and instrumentation should be handled by appropriately trained professionals.

When to schedule routine examinations

Use symptom-triggered contact for new changes, and keep routine examinations even when no warning sign is visible. AAEP owner education published in 2026 gives this age-based guidance:

Horse group AAEP guidance How to apply it
Mature horses At least one thorough dental examination each year Include the oral exam in the horse’s annual veterinary physical; your veterinarian may recommend a different interval for an individual history.
Horses aged 2 to 5 Two thorough dental examinations each year Young horses undergo developmental changes that justify more frequent checks under this guidance.

The cited intervals are recommendations, not prevalence statistics or a guarantee that a horse will remain problem-free between visits. A history of dental disease, abnormal wear, missing teeth, chronic illness, or repeated symptoms may lead your veterinarian to schedule additional examinations.

What to do when you notice a warning sign

  1. Write down the change. Record when it began, whether it is getting worse, and whether it occurs during feeding, grazing, bridling, riding, or rest.
  2. Observe without interfering. Note dropped feed, saliva, head movement, manure texture, odor, discharge, or swelling from a safe position. Do not force the mouth open or insert tools.
  3. Call an equine veterinarian. Explain the sign, the horse’s age, diet, workload, dental history, medications, and any recent changes in feed or tack. Mention bleeding, swelling, substantial eating difficulty, or sudden deterioration when you make the appointment.
  4. Follow feeding and exercise advice. Ask whether the horse should be ridden, offered particular feeds, or separated for monitoring while you wait. Do not change to a stronger bit, start supplements, or give analgesics to mask the problem unless the veterinarian directs you.
  5. Prepare a useful history. Have vaccination and medical records, the last dental date, current feed details, and observations from other handlers available. A short video recorded from a safe distance may help show a behavior that does not occur during the visit.

What a professional dental visit may involve

The veterinarian will usually begin by asking about appetite, chewing, dropped feed, weight, manure, ridden behavior, and previous dental work, then perform a physical examination. A sedated oral examination may be needed for adequate visibility and safe use of specialized instruments. Depending on findings, the veterinarian may recommend imaging, endoscopy, treatment, or a separate investigation for a non-dental cause.

AAEP’s 2025 position statement identifies equine dentistry as an integral branch of professional equine veterinary practice. It places procedures such as removing sharp enamel points, correcting malocclusions, odontoplasty, extractions, restorations or endodontics, periodontal or orthodontic treatment, dental radiography, oral endoscopy, and the administration or prescription of sedatives, tranquilizers, analgesics, or anesthetics within veterinary dental practice. State or provincial rules may govern what can be delegated, so use a licensed veterinarian and follow local requirements.

Signs that should not wait for a routine appointment

Contact a veterinarian promptly rather than waiting for the next scheduled examination if the horse has marked facial or oral swelling, active or repeated bleeding, substantial difficulty eating, sudden inability to eat, or rapid deterioration. These observations do not identify the cause or assign a formal emergency category, but they can signal a problem that needs timely assessment. Keep the horse quiet and avoid manipulating the affected area while arranging advice.

How to avoid misreading the signs

  • Do not use one sign as a diagnosis. Head shaking, poor performance, weight loss, and nasal discharge each have important non-dental explanations.
  • Do not rely on apparent comfort. A horse that finishes its feed can still have a dental problem.
  • Do not perform invasive care at home. Floating, extraction, periodontal treatment, radiography, endoscopy, and sedation require professional judgment, equipment, and legal authorization.
  • Do not postpone a check because the last exam was normal. Dental wear and disease change over time, and the recommended interval is ongoing.

The practical decision is straightforward: any new eating, body-condition, behavior, performance, odor, discharge, bleeding, or swelling change is a reason to contact an equine veterinarian, while age-based examinations provide protection when signs are absent.
