Horse listings can look like a different language until you separate the terms by height, sex, age and type. This guide explains the core vocabulary used in the ASPCA’s “Cracking Horse Code – Part One,” published January 19, 2022, so you can read an adoption profile without guessing what each label means.
Start with the umbrella word: equine
Equine is the broad, inclusive term for a horse or another member of the horse family. In the ASPCA glossary, that group typically includes horses, donkeys, mules and zebras. A listing that says “equine” is therefore using a family term rather than identifying a particular age, sex, size or breed.

This distinction matters when you read shelter records or adoption listings. A description may use “equine” while the individual animal is more specifically a mare, gelding, pony, foal or another category below. The broad word tells you what kind of animal is being discussed; the other labels add detail.

How horse height is measured
Horse height is measured in hands. One hand equals four inches, and height is usually written with the abbreviation hh. For example, 14 hands equals 56 inches (14 × 4). The hand system is used because it gives a standard way to describe an equine’s height at the withers, the highest point of the shoulders.

The ASPCA glossary uses a 14.2hh dividing line for the everyday horse-versus-pony distinction:
| Term | Height description in the ASPCA glossary |
|---|---|
| Horse | An equine over 14.2hh |
| Pony | An equine under 14.2hh |
The glossary does not state how to classify an animal measured at exactly 14.2hh, so do not assume that the boundary is settled by this definition alone. Breed registries, disciplines and individual organizations can use their own classification rules. The same source also notes that miniature horses are occasionally measured in inches rather than hands.
Sex and reproductive-status terms
These three labels tell you whether an adult horse is female, an intact male or a castrated male. They do not, by themselves, describe height, breed, training or temperament.

| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Mare | An adult female horse. The ASPCA says a female is usually called a mare when she is older than three. |
| Gelding | A male horse that has been castrated. |
| Stallion | An adult male horse that has not been gelded. |
“Usually” is important in the mare definition. Age conventions can vary among organizations, and a listing may use a different cutoff when describing a young female. Likewise, “stallion” identifies reproductive status, not a guarantee about behavior or breeding suitability. A gelding can be any height and can also be described by an age term such as yearling when the age fits.

Age, nursing and weaning vocabulary
Horse descriptions often combine an age label with a sex label. The following terms are the core distinctions in the ASPCA glossary:
| Term | Meaning and qualifier |
|---|---|
| Colt | A young ungelded male, usually under four years old. |
| Filly | A young female, usually under four years old. |
| Foal | A nursing baby horse. |
| Weanling | A weaned horse under one year old. The ASPCA says weaning typically occurs between four and seven months. |
| Yearling | A one-year-old horse of any gender. |
These categories overlap in useful ways. A nursing male may be described as a colt and a foal at the same time; a nursing female may be both a filly and a foal. Once a young horse has been weaned but is still under one year, “weanling” describes its stage. “Yearling” is strictly an age term and applies regardless of sex.
The word “usually” in the colt and filly definitions leaves room for organizations to apply age cutoffs differently. If an adoption listing gives a birth date, use that date alongside the label rather than treating a general glossary term as a legal or registry classification.

- “15hh mare” combines height with adult female sex.
- “13.3hh gelding” combines height with castrated-male status; under the ASPCA’s height wording, an equine under 14.2hh is a pony.
- “Six-month-old filly and foal” identifies a young female that is still nursing; if she has already been weaned, “weanling” may be the more precise stage term.
- “Yearling colt” identifies a one-year-old male that has not been gelded.
The labels are not competing names. Height, sex or reproductive status, and age can all appear in the same description. When one term seems incomplete, look for the other fields in the listing.
What “draft horse” means
A draft horse is part of a subgroup selectively bred as a work horse. The ASPCA describes draft horses in relation to pulling heavy loads or plowing fields. “Draft” is therefore a type or historical work-purpose descriptor, not an age or sex category.
A draft horse can still be a mare, gelding or stallion, and it can also be called a foal, yearling or another age term when appropriate. The word does not by itself provide a complete description of the individual animal or settle questions about training, soundness or suitability for a particular adopter.

A gaited horse belongs to a subgroup selectively bred for an additional ambling gait with a lateral stride. In practical terms, “gaited” points to a movement characteristic that is distinct from the ordinary way a horse travels, but the glossary presents it as a common descriptor rather than a complete taxonomy of breeds or movement styles.

As with “draft,” gaited is compatible with the other labels. A gaited horse may be a pony or a horse by height, a mare or gelding by sex, and a yearling or adult by age. To understand what a specific animal can do, you still need the adoption organization’s information about handling, training and health.
Terms that describe different dimensions
A quick way to avoid confusion is to sort each word into the kind of information it supplies:
| Information type | Terms from the glossary | Question answered |
|---|---|---|
| Family | Equine | Is this animal a member of the horse family, including related animals such as donkeys, mules or zebras? |
| Height | Horse, pony, hands, hh | How tall is the equine, and does it fall above or below the 14.2hh wording used by the source? |
| Sex or reproductive status | Mare, gelding, stallion | Is the animal an adult female, a castrated male or an adult male that has not been gelded? |
| Age or developmental stage | Colt, filly, foal, weanling, yearling | How old is the animal, and is it nursing or already weaned? |
| Work or movement type | Draft, gaited | Was it selectively bred for heavy work or an additional ambling gait? |
Because these categories answer different questions, a single animal can carry several labels without contradiction. A listing becomes easier to interpret when you identify which category each word belongs to.
Important qualifiers and limits
The glossary is an introduction, not a universal rulebook for every breed registry, competition discipline or adoption organization. Its wording includes “typically,” “usually” and “occasionally” for good reason:

- Is Your Dog a Picky Eater? We stick to simple formulas rich in natural flavors, that could tempt a fussy eater. No hassle with pills, powder, tablets or capsules.
- Height conventions use hands and the abbreviation hh, while miniature horses are occasionally measured in inches.
- The 14.2hh horse-versus-pony wording leaves the exactly-14.2hh boundary unaddressed.
- A mare is usually a female older than three, but organizations may use different age conventions.
- Colt and filly are usually used for horses under four, while a yearling is defined by being one year old.
- Weanlings are typically weaned between four and seven months, so an individual’s actual transition can differ.
When precision matters—for example, during an adoption, transport or veterinary appointment—use the organization’s stated birth date, measurements and records in addition to the general terms.
Using the vocabulary when you are considering adoption
Knowing the labels helps you ask focused questions, but terminology is only the first step in evaluating an animal. If a listing says “gaited mare,” you know the broad movement and sex descriptors; you still need to ask about handling, training, health history, daily care and the environment in which the horse is comfortable. If it says “draft gelding,” the word “draft” describes the work-bred subgroup and “gelding” describes reproductive status, not the horse’s current workload or manners.
The ASPCA directs people interested in adoption to its Right Horse Adoption Partners. It describes My Right Horse as a place to browse adoptable horses and learn about adoption. Availability, procedures and the information supplied by individual organizations can vary, so read each profile and communicate directly with the listed adoption group.
A compact decoding checklist
- Find the family term. “Equine” is the inclusive horse-family word.
- Check the measurement. Height is given in hands; one hand is four inches, and hh is the usual abbreviation.
- Separate height from sex. Horse or pony concerns the source’s 14.2hh wording; mare, gelding and stallion concern sex or reproductive status.
- Read the age label with its qualifier. Colt, filly, foal, weanling and yearling distinguish sex, nursing or weaning status, and age.
- Notice type descriptors. Draft points to selective breeding for heavy work; gaited points to an additional ambling gait with a lateral stride.
- Verify details with the adoption organization. Ask for the measurements, birth date, records and practical care information behind the shorthand.
Once you sort a listing’s words by family, height, sex, age and type, the language becomes a compact description rather than a barrier. You can then use the organization’s detailed records and conversations with staff to decide whether a particular equine fits your experience, facilities and plans.
