Horses and the Science of Harmony is an equestrian documentary about rider Bubby Upton, horse behavior and wellbeing, but its title promises more than its public descriptions can prove. Horse.TV lists a 1:17:26 runtime and says the film combines Upton’s recovery from a serious spinal injury with discussions of equine behavior and welfare. Producer and press materials name contributors and topics ranging from neurochemistry and stable design to pain-related behavior.

Robert Cook’s December 8, 2024 critique argues that the film leaves out important evidence on bits, barefoot management and the Five Domains Model of welfare. Those are Cook’s interpretations and recommendations, not findings independently established here. The fairest verdict is therefore qualified: the film appears broad in subject, while the critique raises substantive questions about what “harmony” requires and how strongly the documentary supports its welfare claims.

What the documentary is about

Horse.TV presents Horses and the Science of Harmony as a feature-length film following British event rider Bubby Upton after a serious spinal injury. Her personal story is paired with explanations of equine behavior and wellbeing rather than treated as a conventional competition highlight reel. The listing names Mary King, Lucinda Green and Piggy March among the eventing figures featured and gives the running time as 1:17:26 (Horse.TV, accessed 2026).

The central question used in the film’s framing is: “what is it about horses that speaks so strongly to our hearts?” That wording signals an emotional and relational approach. It also creates a demanding standard for the word “harmony”: viewers are entitled to ask whether the film defines harmony, shows how it can be assessed, and addresses practices that may cause discomfort while remaining common in riding.

Topics and experts identified in the film materials

Behavior, cognition and the human–horse relationship

Press and producer descriptions identify Janet Jones discussing horse–human neurochemistry. Padma Video describes additional material on flow, trust, sleep, hearing, contentment, visualization, grazing, competition nerves, spooking and bonding. These subjects span brain science, management, training and the rider’s emotional state. They suggest a deliberately wide survey rather than a single experiment or clinical investigation.

Padma Video identifies Jones as a neuroscientist, horse trainer and author of Horse Brain, Human Brain. That background may help explain why the film connects cognition with practical riding, but an interviewee’s credentials do not by themselves establish that every statement in a documentary is supported by a consensus or by a particular study.

Stable design, movement and pain recognition

Gemma Pearson is listed as discussing stable design and relaxation. Rachel Murray is associated with bridle pressure points and limb movement. Sue Dyson is identified as addressing the recognition of pain-related behavior. Those topics are directly relevant to welfare because a horse’s environment, equipment and movement can influence both comfort and the way behavior is interpreted.

The materials describe subjects and contributors, not a complete transcript or a systematic accounting of the evidence shown on screen. A review should therefore distinguish between “the film discusses pain recognition” and “the film demonstrates that a particular behavior proves pain.” Behavior can be informative while still requiring context, physical examination and attention to alternative explanations.

Hearing and other bonus segments

The producer page lists bonus footage on acoustic ear covers, varied footing, sleep and grazing as well as the topics above. It states that horses hear up to 33,000 Hz and humans up to 20,000 Hz. Those figures are promotional claims attributed to Padma Video; they should be checked against a veterinary or primary biological reference before being generalized to every horse or used to justify a management recommendation.

What Robert Cook’s critique says

In a December 8, 2024 article, veterinarian Robert Cook argues that the documentary omits evidence he considers essential to an educational treatment of harmony and welfare. His objections focus on three areas: barefoot horses, bit-related mouth pain and breathing, and the Five Domains Model used to organize animal-welfare assessment. Cook concludes that, because these subjects are absent or insufficiently addressed, the film is outdated as an educational video and overlooks welfare problems that could be corrected.

Cook’s article is a critical interpretation of the film. It is not an independent audit of every statement made by every participant, and the available material does not establish that all of his scientific claims have been tested here against the original papers he cites. Readers should treat his conclusions as arguments to examine rather than as settled consensus.

Bits and the proposed bit-free comparison

Cook recommends a practical comparison: observe the same horse’s behavior when ridden with a bit and when ridden without one. He presents bit use as incompatible with rider–horse harmony. That proposal can be understood as a welfare question—does removing a piece of equipment change signs of resistance, discomfort or relaxation?—but a before-and-after observation is vulnerable to confounding factors such as rider technique, bridle fit, training history, workload, environment and the horse’s health on each day.

Cook’s recommendation is therefore best reported as his proposed test, not as proof that any behavioral change is caused by the bit or that every horse will benefit from bit removal. Establishing causation would require careful design, appropriate controls and clinical assessment, particularly when claims concern mouth lesions, breathing or performance.

Barefoot management and welfare dimensions

Cook says the film should have addressed research on barefoot horses. Whether a horse should go barefoot depends on hoof quality, terrain, workload, conformation, existing disease, climate and the quality of trimming or protection. The critique identifies an omission; it does not supply a universal barefoot prescription. A responsible review should ask whether the film explains those conditions and acknowledges cases in which shoes or other protection may be necessary.

His reference to the Five Domains Model broadens the discussion beyond visible injury. The model considers nutrition, physical environment, health, behavioral interactions and mental state, with attention to how those domains combine to affect welfare. If a documentary invokes “wellbeing” without showing how these dimensions are evaluated, viewers may be left with an appealing relationship narrative but no method for judging trade-offs.

Bracy Clark’s historical warning

Cook also quotes nineteenth-century veterinarian Bracy Clark from Treatise on the Bits of Horses (1835): “One of the greatest evils and abuses of the horse that still seems to lie before me to treat of, is the bitting: and which, considering how simple an object it is, surprises me it has not been done long since”. The passage shows that concern about bits has a long history. A historical quotation can provide context, but it cannot substitute for modern examination of anatomy, equipment, behavior and welfare outcomes.

Film scope versus the critique

The disagreement becomes clearer when the two source types are separated. Horse.TV and Padma Video describe what the production covers and who appears. Cook evaluates what he believes an educational film ought to include and argues that the selection is inadequate. Neither description alone proves the scientific validity of every statement on screen.

Review question What the film materials establish What Cook asks viewers to consider
Personal story Bubby Upton’s recovery after a serious spinal injury is a major narrative thread. Whether the emotional story is connected to clearly defined welfare evidence.
Behavior and wellbeing The listed subjects include trust, sleep, contentment, spooking, bonding and pain-related behavior. Whether behaviors are treated as welfare indicators with sufficient medical and contextual caveats.
Equipment Press materials mention bridle pressure points and limb movement. Why bit-related mouth pain and breathing evidence, including bit-free comparison, should be addressed.
Welfare framework The public descriptions do not identify a formal framework. Whether the Five Domains Model should have been included.
Hoof care The public descriptions do not identify a dedicated barefoot section. Whether omitting barefoot research leaves a material gap in welfare education.

How to judge the film’s scientific strength

1. Identify the exact claim

Separate a descriptive statement (“horses hear at higher frequencies than humans”) from a recommendation (“use acoustic ear covers”) and from a causal claim (“this equipment causes pain” or “removing it improves harmony”). Each requires a different level of support. Promotional pages are useful for identifying topics, but they are not independent verification of biological claims.

2. Look for traceable evidence

A strong documentary should identify the study, clinical standard or established model behind a consequential statement. Viewers should be able to tell whether evidence comes from laboratory measurements, field observations, veterinary examinations, expert experience or historical commentary. If a film relies mainly on interview authority, that can make the material accessible, but it makes independent checking harder.

3. Check design and limits

Association is not the same as cause. A horse that pins its ears may be expressing pain, fear, frustration, learned anticipation or a response to a specific rider or environment. A change after equipment is removed may be meaningful, but it can also reflect altered rein contact, balance or routine. A fair review asks whether alternative explanations and uncertainty are acknowledged.

4. Consider the whole horse

The Five Domains approach is useful as a checklist because it asks reviewers to consider nutrition, environment, health, behavior and mental experience together. It does not automatically produce a diagnosis or a single correct management choice. The practical question is whether the film gives viewers enough information to recognize competing welfare needs and seek qualified veterinary or rehabilitation advice.

What is established—and what remains uncertain

The sources establish the film’s stated scope, running time and named contributors, as well as Cook’s objections. They do not independently establish that the film is scientifically wrong, that bit use always causes pain, that barefoot management is superior in every case, or that a bit-free trial will produce a reliable welfare diagnosis. Those propositions require direct examination of the underlying veterinary and behavioral literature.

The same caution applies to the statement that Sue Dyson has published “over 450” papers: the producer page’s promotional wording should not be converted into a research statistic without checking a bibliographic record. A press release also quotes Dyson saying, “People have actually lost sight of what ‘normal’ looks like.” That is a reported quotation, not a transcript or a measured finding, and it should be attributed to her rather than presented as an objective result.

Availability and related context

An October 25, 2024 press release said the film was free on YouTube and smart-TV platforms. Streaming availability changes, so viewers should confirm the current Horse.TV listing or platform catalog before relying on that announcement. In August 2025, an American Horse Publications announcement reported selections for three equine film festivals, indicating continued interest after the initial release.

Readers interested in equine cognition may also encounter Jones’s book Horse Brain, Human Brain, which Padma Video identifies as a companion resource. The film does not require the book, and current retail availability is not established here.

Bottom-line assessment

Horses and the Science of Harmony is best understood as a broad, relationship-centered documentary that uses Upton’s story to introduce many questions about behavior, management and comfort. Its public descriptions show an unusually wide menu of topics, from stable relaxation and neurochemistry to sleep, grazing and pain-related behavior. They do not, by themselves, show how rigorously each claim is sourced or how disagreements are handled.

Cook’s critique is valuable because it identifies concrete omissions rather than objecting only to tone: bits and possible mouth or breathing problems, barefoot evidence and a formal welfare framework. His bit-free recommendation and conclusion that bit use is incompatible with harmony remain his arguments. The most responsible viewing stance is neither to dismiss the film nor to accept the critique as final: use the film to generate questions, then check equipment, pain and welfare claims against current veterinary guidance and the original evidence before changing a horse’s care or training.
