She offered to foster him while he recovered. Caring for Hutch gave Ritter a new daily rhythm, and his affection helped her reconnect with ordinary joy. About a month later, she and her husband adopted him, renamed him Einstein, and watched him return to running and playing.

How Hutch arrived at Best Friends
Hutch was transferred from Pine Bluff Animal Shelter to Best Friends in Northwest Arkansas. A veterinarian examined him and found that his front leg was fractured. The leg was placed in a splint and wrapped in a soft cast so it could heal.

Although Hutch was injured and in pain, Sarah Lorenzen, a medical coordinator at Best Friends, remembered him as unusually gentle. “But when he came to us, he was an absolute doll,” she says in the Best Friends feature. “I know that he was in pain, but even at the vet he was a perfect gentleman.” That temperament mattered when the shelter team was looking for a foster home capable of following a restricted recovery plan.

Hutch’s case was not a routine healthy-dog placement. The splint needed protection, his activity had to be limited, and his foster family had to be prepared for veterinary instructions to shape everyday life.
Why Rocio Ritter volunteered to foster him
Ritter and her husband, Glenn, were grieving after Pisa, Ritter’s dachshund of 15½ years, died suddenly in January 2022. Ritter began visiting shelters and looking for a way to help a dog without immediately deciding to adopt again.
Hutch’s photo caught her attention. His small size made him a reasonable possibility for a home that already included Dickie, another small, older dog. Ritter also felt that a smaller foster would be less intimidating for Dickie than a large, energetic newcomer. Her initial plan was temporary: provide a safe place for Hutch to recover, then help him move to a permanent home.
That distinction is important. Fostering let Ritter support an animal in need while leaving room for her own grief and for a careful introduction to the surviving dog in her household. The eventual adoption was a decision that came later, after she had seen Hutch’s needs and personality at home.
What Hutch’s foster recovery required
The Best Friends account describes a specific veterinary care routine. It is not a universal treatment plan for a fractured leg; splinting, confinement and exercise limits must be set by the treating veterinary team.

| Recovery need | What Ritter did in Hutch’s case |
|---|---|
| Restricted activity | She was advised to keep Hutch in a crate as much as possible while the fracture healed. |
| Dry splint wrap | The fabric around the splint had to stay dry, so ordinary outdoor trips required extra protection. |
| Brief walks | Ritter put a protective boot over the wrapped splint for short walks outside. |
| Indoor adjustment | Hutch was initially afraid of the apartment’s laminate flooring and needed time to become comfortable moving around. |
| Household introduction | He gradually settled in and got along with Dickie, the resident older dog. |
A foster arrangement like this involves more than supplying food and affection. Someone must monitor the injured limb, prevent forbidden activity, keep bandaging clean and dry, and notice changes that warrant a call to the clinic. The protective boot in this story was an item used over Hutch’s wrap for short outdoor trips; it should not be treated as a substitute for veterinary direction or as a reason to increase exercise.
Why routine mattered
Crate rest can make a lively young dog frustrated, while a splint can change balance and confidence. Hutch’s hesitation on the laminate floor showed how an injury can affect ordinary movement, not just outdoor exercise. Ritter had to make the apartment predictable and give him time to adapt rather than pushing him to act normally before his leg was ready.

Those tasks gave Ritter something concrete to do while she was still processing Pisa’s death.
When fostering became adoption
About a month after Hutch arrived, the adoption team contacted Ritter about a possible adopter. By then she had experienced his behavior beyond the first shelter visit: how he handled confinement, how he responded to the apartment, and how he fit with Dickie.
Ritter and Glenn decided to keep him. Once the splint came off and his leg had healed, Hutch was able to run and play again with the family. They renamed him Einstein, marking the change from temporary foster to permanent member of the household.

The sequence matters. The decision followed a period of observation and care rather than an assumption that a grieving person should immediately replace a lost pet. Ritter first offered a foster home, then evaluated the practical and emotional fit, and only afterward chose adoption.
How Hutch and Ritter supported each other
Ritter describes Hutch as bringing energy and affection back into a home that had become quiet after Pisa’s death. Caring for an injured dog required her to focus on the next small responsibility even when grief made the future feel uncertain. Hutch, in turn, received a stable home while he was vulnerable and unable to behave like a fully active dog.
“It’s incredible,” Ritter says in the Best Friends feature, “how much light a little furry guy can bring into a person’s life.” The statement captures her experience, not a measured outcome that can be expected for every adopter. Einstein did not erase Pisa, and the story does not claim that grief ended when the adoption papers were completed. It shows how a new relationship and a caregiving routine became part of Ritter’s adjustment.
For Hutch, the benefit was equally concrete: shelter transfer, medical treatment, a protected recovery period and a permanent family. His healing was physical; Ritter’s was emotional and gradual. The two processes happened alongside each other without being identical.
What veterinary guidance says about adopting after a loss
The American Veterinary Medical Association describes pet-loss grief as personal. Its 2025 guidance says some people may find that a new pet helps them recover, while emphasizing that whether and when to welcome another animal is an individual decision.

That guidance points to several questions a household should consider:
- Is everyone in the home ready for the time, expense and responsibility of another animal?
- How might a surviving pet respond to a newcomer?
- Does the prospective dog’s size, temperament, energy level and healthcare needs fit the household?
- Can the family provide lifelong care rather than viewing the adoption only as a response to immediate sadness?
- Would grief support, counseling or time without a new pet be more appropriate right now?
Family members may be at different stages of mourning. A conversation before fostering or adopting can prevent one person’s need for companionship from becoming pressure on someone else or stress for an existing pet. A new dog can become an important relationship, but it is not a replacement for the animal who died.

Hutch’s experience offers a practical picture of the questions to ask before agreeing to a medical foster placement. The American Veterinary Medical Association’s dog-selection guidance also emphasizes matching a dog’s needs with a household’s capacity and committing to care throughout the animal’s life.
Clarify the medical plan
Ask the shelter or veterinary team what the injury is, what equipment is being used, how much confinement is required, and which signs require an urgent call. Confirm who supplies medication, replacement bandages and follow-up appointments. Written instructions are easier to follow when several people share care.
Prepare the physical space
A crate or pen should be large enough for the dog to rest comfortably without encouraging unnecessary movement. Remove slippery routes, block stairs and plan a dry path to the outdoors. If flooring is unfamiliar or difficult to navigate, allow the dog to acclimate slowly under the activity limits set by the veterinarian.

Plan for the resident pet
Introduce dogs gradually and supervise early interactions. A calm older dog may tolerate a newcomer, but age, pain, fear and guarding behavior can change the picture. Give each animal separate resting and feeding areas, and make sure the resident pet still receives attention and quiet time.
Budget time for observation
Medical fostering often means several short care tasks spread across the day rather than one dramatic intervention. Someone must check that the wrap remains dry, follow the exercise restriction and notice whether the dog is eating, resting and moving as expected. Before saying yes, identify who will handle care during work hours, travel or emergencies.
Decide what happens if the fit is wrong
Ask the organization how to report problems and whether it will arrange a transfer if the dog’s needs exceed the foster home’s capacity. A responsible handoff protects the animal and the household; continuing beyond what a family can safely manage is not a measure of commitment.

The lasting meaning of Einstein’s story
Hutch’s journey contains two forms of recovery without turning either into a formula. Veterinary treatment and careful restrictions allowed a fractured leg to heal. A foster placement gave Ritter a way to care for another living being while she mourned Pisa. Over time, the arrangement became adoption, and Einstein returned to an active life with a family that had chosen him deliberately.
For readers, the useful lesson is not that every bereaved person should adopt. It is that fostering, adoption and grief all require attention to timing, household fit and individual needs. A dog can offer companionship while a person is healing, and a person can give an injured dog the patience and protection needed to heal too.
