Adopting Herman, a shelter dog Elsa Nilsson-Canin had once feared because of stereotypes about pit bull terriers, changed how she saw the dogs—and became the starting point for years of animal advocacy. Best Friends Animal Society’s 2023 profile calls Herman “The Herminator” and describes him as a “marshmallow who stole Elsa’s heart.”
How Herman changed Elsa’s view
Elsa encountered Herman alone in a shelter and understood that he was at risk of losing his life. Although she had been wary of dogs like him because of stereotypical rumors, she decided to adopt him. The Best Friends feature recounts that choice as the turning point: getting to know Herman replaced an abstract fear with a relationship with an individual dog.
