For Louisiana volunteer Barbara Bornemann, Best Friends Animal Sanctuary became more than a place to help cats. Repeated fostering, transport trips and weeklong stays in Angel Canyon created a bond so strong that she and her husband, Peter, bought a Southern Utah townhome and planned to retire nearby. A 2014 Best Friends profile by Jennifer Hayes traces how that relationship grew from one adoption into years of service and regular returns.

Who Barbara Bornemann is

Barbara Bornemann is a Louisiana cat foster volunteer whose work with homeless and special-needs cats repeatedly brought her to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Southern Utah. Her involvement included fostering, adoption events, trap/neuter/return (TNR) work with community cats and transporting cats to safety. The profile published January 29, 2014, presents the Sanctuary as both a place of service and a place where Barbara felt at home.

By the time of that story, Barbara and her husband, Peter, had purchased a townhome in Southern Utah and were planning to retire in the area. Their decision was shaped not by a single visit, but by years of returning to the Sanctuary, working with its animals and building relationships with the people there.

That combination of local rescue work and long-distance involvement is central to understanding her story. Barbara was not connected to Best Friends only as a visitor, donor or occasional event helper. She fostered cats in Louisiana, helped them find homes, transported animals when a local group lacked capacity and then spent extended periods working directly at the Sanctuary. Each role connected the next one.

How a first cat changed Barbara’s understanding of homeless pets

Barbara grew up in Germany with dogs and fish. She says her husband introduced her to cats, and her first direct encounter with the problem of homeless pets in the United States came after the couple moved to Louisiana.

In 2000, she adopted a cat from PAAW in Lafayette, Louisiana. That adoption connected her with the organization’s rescue work and led her to begin fostering cats there. The sequence matters: she did not begin with a formal career in animal welfare. A household adoption gave her a closer view of how many other cats still needed temporary care and permanent homes.

She later volunteered for Wildcat Foundation, described in the profile as a partner in Best Friends’ No More Homeless Pets Network. Her work with both groups broadened her understanding of rescue. A cat could need a foster home, a ride, help at an adoption event or a carefully managed return to its outdoor community. Barbara took on several of those needs rather than limiting herself to one type of assignment.

Fostering gave Barbara a way to help individual cats while they waited for permanent homes. Her work expanded beyond the home: she helped at adoption events, participated in TNR for community cats and assisted with transportation. These roles allowed her to support cats at different points in the rescue process, from initial care to placement.

The profile does not describe a single moment when she decided to make animal welfare a major part of her life. Instead, the commitment appears cumulative. The first cat introduced her to PAAW; fostering introduced her to more cats; local volunteer work exposed her to broader community needs; and transport trips connected those needs with Best Friends.

A timeline of service, from Louisiana to Angel Canyon

Barbara’s path can be followed through a series of dated or clearly described milestones:

  • Before 2000: She grew up in Germany with dogs and fish and did not describe herself as being raised around cats.
  • 2000: She adopted a cat from PAAW in Lafayette, Louisiana, and became more aware of homeless pets in the United States.
  • After that adoption: She began fostering for PAAW and later volunteered with Wildcat Foundation.
  • After a Las Vegas convention: Barbara and Peter made their first visit to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.
  • Since 2006: Barbara said she had returned regularly, describing each visit as a homecoming.
  • During the year before the January 2014 profile: She volunteered at the Sanctuary five times, staying from one week to 10 days per visit.
  • By January 2014: She and Peter had purchased a Southern Utah townhome and were planning to retire in the area.

The timeline shows why “second home” is more than a decorative phrase. The Sanctuary became part of a recurring rhythm that included long drives, extended stays, familiar work and plans for a future nearby.

The rescue work behind her reputation

Fostering at an exceptional scale

The 2014 profile says Barbara had fostered more than 700 cats over the preceding 13 years. That is a figure from the period covered by the article, not a current lifetime total or an independently audited count. It illustrates the sustained nature of her commitment after adopting her first cat in 2000.

More than 700 foster cats represents a long succession of temporary responsibilities. Each cat would have entered her care while waiting for another step, whether that meant an adoption event, a transfer, a transport or another placement. The article does not provide a breakdown by year, breed, age or medical condition, so the number should be understood as the broad total Barbara reported in that period rather than a detailed statistical record.

Fostering also exposed her to cats who needed specialized placement. Among the animals she cared about most were cats living with feline leukemia virus (FeLV), a group she later sought out at Best Friends. The profile also notes that Best Friends accepted cats with feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV); it does not provide medical guidance or treatment details.

Her connection with FeLV cats was personal as well as practical. When a rescue group had cats it could not adequately accommodate, Barbara was willing to help move them toward a setting that could accept them. Later, at Cat World, she gravitated toward the FeLV cats at Casa de Calmar. The same concern appears in both parts of the story: she noticed animals who required a different kind of placement and kept showing up for them.

Adoption events and community-cat work

Barbara’s volunteer work was not limited to cats living inside her home. She helped at adoption events, where rescue organizations could introduce cats to potential adopters. The profile does not list specific events, dates or adoption totals, but it places this work alongside fostering, TNR and transport as part of her regular contribution.

She also participated in trap/neuter/return, commonly abbreviated TNR, for community cats. In the article, TNR is one element of her Louisiana-based work rather than a separate career or program with its own reported results. The profile does not state how many cats she trapped, how many surgeries occurred or what happened to individual colonies. It does establish that she was willing to work with cats whose lives were connected to outdoor communities as well as with foster cats awaiting homes.

These activities required different kinds of attention. Fostering involved making room for cats temporarily; adoption events involved presenting them to prospective homes; TNR involved helping community cats through a rescue process; and transport involved getting animals from one organization to another. Barbara’s story is notable because she moved among all of those roles.

Transporting cats to Best Friends

One important trip began when PAAW took in cats with FeLV but did not have the capacity to care for them. Best Friends agreed to accept those cats, along with two cats with FIV, and Barbara delivered four cats on that journey. The account does not name the vehicle, carrier or route, and it does not identify a transport program that readers can join today. What it records is Barbara’s willingness to make the delivery when a transfer was needed.

She continued making such trips. Over the years covered by the profile, she transported 21 cats. The account names Matt, who had been found in a Louisiana swamp, and Lollie, a cat with FeLV, among the animals she carried to Best Friends. The number belongs to the 2014 report and should not be read as a present-day total.

The first trip and the later total show two different dimensions of her role. Delivering four cats was a particular response to PAAW’s capacity problem. Transporting 21 cats over the years shows a repeated pattern rather than a one-time favor. The profile does not say that every trip involved FeLV or FIV cats, so those cases should not be treated as representative of every transport.

Transport is often the link between a rescue group with limited space and a sanctuary able to receive animals that need a different setting. Barbara’s trips connected Louisiana cats with the care available at Best Friends, while also giving her a reason to return to the Sanctuary. Matt’s discovery in a Louisiana swamp and Lollie’s FeLV status give the otherwise numerical account a human-scale sense of the animals involved.

For readers who transport cats today, the story supports only a general lesson: transportation is a serious responsibility that should be arranged with the sending and receiving organizations. The article does not identify equipment, safety procedures or a product Barbara used, and it does not endorse any carrier or service.

Why Casa de Calmar mattered to her

At Cat World, Barbara formed a particular connection with the FeLV-positive cats housed at Casa de Calmar. Her tasks there were practical and repetitive: she cleaned rooms, walked cats and continued doing dishes even when a hip replacement the previous year limited some of her activities.

Cleaning rooms and washing dishes may sound less dramatic than delivering cats across state lines, but the profile treats those chores as meaningful parts of Sanctuary life. They supported the daily routine of the cats and the people caring for them. Walking cats gave Barbara direct time with the animals, while cleaning and dishes helped keep their living area functioning.

The profile includes a small scene that captures the familiarity she developed in the space. While Barbara washed dishes, a cat named Vlad drank from the faucet. It is an ordinary moment, but it shows how her contribution was woven into the daily routine of the area rather than limited to occasional public-facing events. Vlad’s behavior also suggests that Barbara had become comfortable enough in the room for such an unplanned interaction to feel natural.

Barbara’s health history in the article is historical context. The hip replacement affected what she could do during that period, yet she remained involved and found ways to continue helping at Casa de Calmar. The story does not provide medical advice, recovery details or a current account of her health, so the operation should not be used to infer anything about her condition now.

Her continued dishwashing is important because it illustrates adaptation. When one kind of activity became harder, she did not stop participating altogether. She continued with a task that was useful and within her ability at the time. The profile presents that persistence without turning it into a claim that every volunteer should work through an injury.

From a post-convention visit to regular homecomings

Barbara and Peter first visited the Sanctuary after attending a convention in Las Vegas. The setting and the experience stayed with them. Barbara told Best Friends that she had visited regularly since 2006 and that each return felt like “a homecoming.”

She described the drive into Angel Canyon as unusually calming: “Driving into the canyon gives me an inner peace that I haven’t experienced in many places.” In another description of the Sanctuary, she said, “It feels like coming home.” These are personal observations about what the place meant to her, not claims about a volunteer program or an outcome measured by Best Friends.

The language of homecoming is supported by the pattern of her visits. During the year before the profile was published, she volunteered at the Sanctuary five times. Each visit lasted from one week to 10 days. That means her stays were long enough for routines to form: arriving, reporting for work, returning to the same areas and seeing familiar animals and people.

Five visits in one year does not mean she lived at the Sanctuary or had a permanent position there. The profile describes repeated volunteer stays, not employment or residency. It also does not state how many hours she worked each day. The useful point is the combination of frequency and duration: she came back often and stayed for substantial stretches.

Angel Canyon itself was part of the attachment. Barbara’s comment about the drive shows that the emotional experience began before she reached Cat World or Casa de Calmar. The road, the canyon and the arrival all became associated with relief and familiarity. Her description of the landscape is subjective, but it helps explain why the couple’s relationship with Southern Utah extended beyond the volunteer assignments.

Why the couple planned to retire in Southern Utah

Barbara’s attachment to Best Friends grew from several elements at once: the cats she transported from Louisiana, the FeLV cats at Casa de Calmar, the people she met and the physical experience of arriving in Angel Canyon. Over time, those visits influenced a major personal decision.

By January 2014, Barbara and Peter had bought a townhome in Southern Utah and were planning to retire there. The purchase gave practical form to the feeling she had expressed in her descriptions of the Sanctuary. A place she once reached through long visits would become part of their everyday surroundings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The article does not say that Best Friends required or requested the move. It presents the retirement plan as the couple’s choice, influenced by their affection for the area and the people and animals they encountered there. Nor does it claim that Barbara had already retired, relocated permanently or established a post-retirement volunteer schedule.

The townhome also shows how volunteer experiences can affect decisions outside the volunteer setting. Barbara’s involvement was not only about the hours she spent cleaning, walking cats or transporting animals. The repeated visits helped shape where she and Peter imagined their later life. A sanctuary became a landmark in their personal geography.

What makes her service distinctive

Many volunteers contribute in one recognizable way. Barbara’s contribution crossed several boundaries. She fostered more than 700 cats in the period described, helped at adoption events, worked with community cats through TNR, transported 21 cats over the years and repeatedly volunteered at Best Friends. The profile does not rank these activities or claim that one was more valuable than another. Together, they show range and persistence.

Her service also connected local and national work. PAAW and Wildcat Foundation were part of her Louisiana network. Best Friends provided a destination for some cats whose local group lacked capacity and a place where Barbara could continue helping in person. The transport trips were therefore not separate from her Sanctuary visits; they linked the two parts of her volunteer life.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Her interest in FeLV cats gives the story another through line. She encountered cats with FeLV in the context of PAAW’s capacity problem, delivered Lollie and other cats to Best Friends and later spent time with FeLV cats at Casa de Calmar. The article does not explain the virus, prescribe care or compare medical outcomes. It simply documents the group of cats with whom Barbara felt a particular connection.

Finally, her service was sustained despite change. She kept returning after the first visit, continued volunteering after the hip replacement described in the story and adapted her tasks at Casa de Calmar. The profile’s emphasis is not on a dramatic rescue victory but on the accumulation of ordinary acts over many years.

What the 2014 profile does and does not establish

The account provides a clear snapshot of Barbara’s involvement as of January 29, 2014. It supports the figures of more than 700 foster cats over 13 years, 21 transported cats over the years and five Sanctuary visits in the preceding year, each lasting one week to 10 days. Those figures should remain tied to that publication and should not be updated or projected without newer reporting.

It also records a plan, not a completed move: Barbara and Peter had purchased a townhome and intended to retire in Southern Utah. The story does not report whether they later moved, how their retirement unfolded or whether Barbara’s volunteer schedule changed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Likewise, the profile is not a current volunteer handbook. It does not establish present-day eligibility rules, open roles, schedules, health requirements, transport policies or housing arrangements. Anyone considering volunteering would need current information directly from Best Friends. The historical story can show what one dedicated volunteer did, but it cannot substitute for today’s instructions.

That distinction protects the story’s meaning. Barbara’s experience is valuable because it is specific: a Louisiana adopter became a foster volunteer, transporter and recurring Sanctuary helper whose connection to Angel Canyon influenced a retirement plan. Turning those details into universal requirements would add claims the profile does not make.

Barbara’s story in context

Barbara’s path shows how volunteer involvement can develop gradually. It began with adopting one cat, expanded through fostering and local rescue work, and then grew to include transport and recurring Sanctuary visits. Each step responded to a concrete need: temporary homes for foster cats, help for community cats, transportation for animals a local group could not accommodate and daily care for cats at Casa de Calmar.

The story also shows why a sanctuary can feel like a second home to a dedicated volunteer. Familiar work, repeated visits and relationships with animals can make a large facility personally meaningful. For Barbara, the emotional connection was tied to specific places and routines: the road into Angel Canyon, the rooms at Casa de Calmar, the cats she walked and even the dishes she washed while Vlad drank from the faucet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Her example does not depend on a single spectacular act. The 700-plus foster cats, the 21 transports and the five visits in one year are evidence of continuity. So are the smaller details: returning since 2006, remembering individual cats such as Matt and Lollie, continuing to wash dishes and describing each arrival as a homecoming.
