How Better-Hatched Eggs Made History in the U.S.

U.S. shoppers first gained access to better-hatched eggs in 2025. Here’s how in-ovo sexing works, what carton claims mean, and where the ASPCA lists them.

In 2025, U.S. shoppers could buy eggs from hens hatched without routine post-hatch killing of male chicks for the first time, according to the ASPCA. The milestone began with NestFresh’s Humanely Hatched eggs—but it does not mean in-ovo sexing is new, or that the practice has replaced chick culling across the egg industry.

What makes an egg “better-hatched”?

“Better-hatched” is the ASPCA’s consumer-facing term for table eggs laid by hens hatched under practices intended to avoid routine killing of male layer chicks. The change happens at the hatchery, before the hens lay the eggs sold at a grocery store. It does not involve treating or changing the grocery egg itself. ASPCA

In-ovo sexing identifies an embryo’s sex while an egg is incubating. Under the method described by Certified Humane, hatcheries can continue incubating selected viable female embryos rather than hatch male chicks and kill them afterward. The certification standard’s stated goal is to identify male embryos before development of pain perception; that wording describes the standard’s aim, not independent proof that every commercial implementation achieves the same outcome. The scale of the issue is substantial: the ASPCA estimates that more than 600 million chicks hatch annually in the U.S. egg industry, about half of them male. That figure is the organization’s estimate, not a count of chicks affected by any single company or product. ASPCA

Why was the 2025 U.S. retail milestone historic?

In-ovo sexing itself predates 2025. What changed was consumer access: the ASPCA says U.S. shoppers could first buy eggs produced without male chick culling in 2025, when NestFresh introduced its Humanely Hatched product. The milestone made a hatchery practice visible in a U.S. retail product; it did not establish industry-wide adoption. ASPCA, “How Better-Hatched Eggs Made History,” March 5, 2026

Other company actions are distinct and at different stages. The ASPCA names Kipster’s transition, Vital Farms’ adoption of in-ovo sexing at its primary hatchery, Sauder’s announced transition, and Evermore’s commitment to use fully better-hatched eggs in pet-food ingredients. These statements do not mean every company has completed a transition across all of its supply or that each product carries a shopper-facing label. ASPCA, March 5, 2026

As of July 2026, Innovate Animal Ag estimated that more than 4% of the U.S. commercial layer flock had publicly announced a transition to in-ovo sexing, based on information available June 1, 2026. This measures announced transitions—not the share of current retail eggs with a verified label. Innovate Animal Ag, “In-Ovo Sexing: Market Penetration and Forecast,” July 2026

How can I tell which eggs have been produced using this new technology?

Look for explicit hatchery wording, not just a claim about how hens are raised. The ASPCA points shoppers to NestFresh’s Humanely Hatched label and the Certified Humane wording “Our laying hens are from approved hatcheries.” The latter refers to a specific optional certification standard, not a universal meaning shared by all egg labels. “Cage-free,” “free-range,” and “pasture-raised” describe aspects of hen housing or access. Those terms by themselves do not tell you whether male chicks were culled at the hatchery. Check the carton for a specific hatchery claim or certification and, if it is unclear, check the producer’s current information.

What the Certified Humane Approved Hatchery standard covers

Certified Humane’s 2024 Laying Hen Chick Hatchery Operations standard makes its Approved Hatchery standard completely optional. It permits either in-ovo sexing to select viable female embryos or incubating and hatching all viable chicks for on-farm placement. It also sets chick-handling and traceability requirements. For the in-ovo protocol, the standard calls for auditable sexing records and says the method must not negatively affect embryo viability or laying-hen productivity. A carton’s wording should therefore be read in the context of this particular standard; other labels may make different claims. Certified Humane, Edition 24 (2024)

Where can shoppers find better-hatched eggs?

Retail listings and availability can change by store. The ASPCA’s current guidance lists these locations for NestFresh Humanely Hatched eggs; confirm with a local store before making a trip. ASPCA retailer guidance

  • Whole Foods Market: listed in 28 states and Washington, D.C.
  • ACME Markets: select stores in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.
  • Safeway: select locations in Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C.
  • H-E-B: Texas.

Kipster: eggs may be available before the cartons identify the practice

The ASPCA says Kipster eggs from hens hatched using in-ovo sexing are available through Kroger banners. But Kipster’s packaging will not identify eggs as free of male chick culling until the company’s full transition, planned by the end of 2026. Kipster describes in-ovo sexing as an interim measure while it pursues raising males for meat, so do not assume every Kipster carton is already identifiable as better-hatched. ASPCA retailer guidance; Kipster, “What is in-ovo sexing to prevent male chick culling in egg farming?”

Sauder’s: a conditional future commitment

Sauder’s says it committed to use in-ovo sexing for specified Sauder’s-branded free-range and pasture-raised flocks after August 2026, provided its source can meet demand. That is a conditional commitment, not confirmation that implementation is complete or qualifying cartons carry a shopper-facing label. Sauder’s, “In-Ovo Sexing”

How much do better-hatched eggs cost?

The cited sources do not establish a current U.S. retail price premium for better-hatched eggs. The ASPCA said there was not yet enough U.S. retail data when its FAQ was prepared, so a reliable shelf-price comparison is not available from these sources. ASPCA FAQ

A 2023 consumer survey is not a substitute for current store prices. Nielsen Consumer Insights fielded Innovate Animal Ag’s survey of 1,012 U.S. egg buyers from June 24 to July 2, 2023; respondents were responsible for at least half of their household grocery purchases. In the survey, 71% said they would pay a premium for eggs produced using in-ovo sexing, and around half said they would pay at least 60 cents more per dozen. These are self-reported willingness-to-pay responses, not observed sales or a current price premium. Innovate Animal Ag, “In-Ovo Sexing American Consumer Survey”
