Most walleye are about 12 to 30 inches long and weigh roughly 1 to 10 pounds. A typical adult is closer to 14–24 inches and 1–5 pounds, while a walleye measuring 30 inches or weighing around 10 pounds is an exceptional catch in many fisheries.

What is the average size of a walleye?
The average walleye kept by anglers can be much smaller than the species’ maximum size. Minnesota Department of Natural Resources reports that the average walleye caught and kept in Minnesota is approximately 14 inches long and slightly more than 1 pound.
That figure describes an ordinary harvested fish in a particular fishery. It should not be confused with the size an adult walleye can eventually reach. Walleye grow at different rates, and a productive lake with abundant prey may produce heavier fish than a water body with limited food or a dense walleye population.
How much does a walleye weigh by length?
The following estimates combine published Minnesota and Wisconsin fisheries charts. They are useful for estimating a fish’s weight when you have its length, but they are not a substitute for weighing the individual fish.

| 26 inches | 6.2–6.5 pounds |
| 28 inches | 7.9–8.1 pounds |
| 30 inches | 9.0–10.5 pounds |
For example, Minnesota’s 2026 fishing regulations estimate a 20-inch walleye at about 2.7 pounds, a 25-inch fish at about 5.4 pounds, and a 28-inch fish at about 7.9 pounds. Wisconsin’s chart estimates approximately 3.0 pounds at 20 inches, 5.1 pounds at 24 inches, 8.1 pounds at 28 inches, and 10.5 pounds at 30 inches.
The differences between those charts are normal. Length-to-weight formulas are based on particular fish populations, and actual weight changes with season, body shape, girth, sex, and reproductive condition.
How big can walleye get?
Walleye are medium-to-large members of the perch family, but exceptional individuals can become very large. FishBase lists a maximum reported length of 107 centimeters fork length, or approximately 42.1 inches, and a maximum published weight of 11.3 kilograms, or about 24.9 pounds. Its maximum reported age is 29 years.

The National Park Service describes a large walleye as reaching about 30 inches and 15 pounds and gives the species’ record as approximately 42 inches and 25 pounds. Those figures describe different parts of the size distribution: a very large fish that may occur in a population is not the same as an exceptional world-record specimen.
The International Game Fish Association lists the current all-tackle record at 25 pounds, 0 ounces (11.34 kilograms). That is a record benchmark, not a normal expectation for a walleye angler.
Examples of unusually large walleye
State, world, survey, and species records should be kept separate because they use different definitions and documentation standards.
- IGFA all-tackle record: 25 pounds, 0 ounces.
- Minnesota historical state record: 17 pounds, 8 ounces and 353⁄4 inches, caught in the Seagull River at Saganaga Lake on May 13, 1979.
- Large Idaho survey fish: A 2025 Oakley Reservoir survey found a 291⁄4-inch walleye weighing 9.8 pounds and estimated to be 19 years old.
Minnesota DNR classifies its 17-pound, 8-ounce state-record weight as a historical non-certified-weight record because record submissions made before 1980 did not require certified weights. It remains important historical information, but it should not be presented as equivalent to a modern certified weighing.
A fisheries survey’s largest sampled walleye is also not automatically a lake, state, or world record. It only tells you about the fish encountered by that survey.

As a result, an especially large or heavy walleye is more likely to be female, particularly when it is an older fish. This is a population-level tendency, not a dependable way to identify the sex of an individual walleye from a photograph. Body size alone is not proof that a fish is female.
How old is a large walleye?
There is no universal age-to-length chart for walleye. Growth depends heavily on the water body, climate, food supply, population density, and genetics.
One Iowa DNR example shows walleye reaching approximately 5.5 inches in their first year, followed by about 9.3, 12.4, 15.2, 17.4, 19.2, 20.6, 21.7, 22.1, and 23.2 inches over the next eight years. This is an example growth sequence from Iowa, not a rule for every lake or river.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Some walleye grow slowly but live for many years. In Idaho’s 2025 Oakley Reservoir survey, a 291⁄4-inch, 9.8-pound fish was estimated to be 19 years old. That example shows why length alone cannot reliably determine age.
Why two walleye of the same length can weigh different amounts
- Season: A fish may be heaviest before or during spawning and lighter after spawning.
- Sex: Mature females may weigh more at the same length, particularly when carrying eggs.
- Food supply: Abundant prey generally supports better body condition and greater girth.
- Water body: Temperature, productivity, forage species, and population density vary from one lake or river to another.
- Age and body shape: Two fish with identical lengths may have different girths, muscle mass, and reproductive mass.
For this reason, statements such as “every 30-inch walleye weighs 15 pounds” are misleading. Published charts themselves differ, and a healthy 30-inch fish may fall well above or below a generic estimate.
What counts as a big walleye?
There is no single scientific cutoff for a “big” walleye, but these angling descriptions are useful:

- 20 inches: A respectable adult walleye in many fisheries.
- 25 inches: A quality fish and often considered trophy-sized by everyday angling standards.
- 30 inches: An exceptional walleye that is uncommon in many waters.
- 10 pounds: A major trophy, especially outside unusually productive fisheries.
- Over 30 inches and 15 pounds: Possible, but uncommon and highly impressive.
- Near 25 pounds: Extraordinary record-class size.
These labels are angling conventions rather than official thresholds. A 25-inch walleye may be considered more or less impressive depending on the region and the fishery.
How to measure a walleye accurately
For a normal catch, place the walleye on a flat measuring surface with its snout against the end stop. Keep the fish straight and extend the tail naturally. Record the length consistently, and follow local rules if the fish will be kept.
A fish measuring board is the simplest way to get repeatable measurements when comparing catches or documenting a particularly large walleye. A folding board is convenient in a boat, while a soft catch-and-release measuring mat can provide a fish-friendly surface for anglers who plan to release the fish. These tools document length; they do not establish weight.
For an IGFA length-record submission, the organization requires an official measuring device on a flat surface, with the fish’s snout against the nose stop and the measurement taken to the rear center edge of the tail. The entire fish and measuring device should be photographed, and IGFA length-record categories emphasize releasing the fish alive.
To determine weight, use an appropriate digital fish scale and minimize the fish’s time out of the water. An ordinary scale can provide a useful personal measurement, but it does not automatically meet the certification requirements for a state or world record. Record-weight claims require following the rules of the applicable organization and jurisdiction.

Length, fork length, and total length are not always interchangeable
When comparing size records, check how the fish was measured. A fish’s fork length is measured to the center of the fork in its tail, while total length generally includes the longest point of the tail. The dossier’s approximately 42.1-inch FishBase maximum is specifically reported as fork length, so it should not be casually compared with an unspecified or total-length measurement.

Record listings may also differ in weighing procedures, certification, historical rules, and whether the fish was measured in a survey or submitted as a record. Those details matter when two impressive catches appear to be the same size.
Bottom line
Most walleye anglers encounter fish measuring 12–30 inches and weighing approximately 1–10 pounds. Many ordinary adults fall in the 14–24-inch, 1–5-pound range. Walleye around 25 inches are large, 30-inch fish are exceptional, and the biggest documented record-class fish reach about 42 inches and 25 pounds. Use length-to-weight charts only as estimates: the fish’s sex, season, condition, age, and home water can all change the result.

Is a 20-inch walleye considered big?
A 20-inch walleye is generally a respectable adult fish, while a 25-inch walleye is often considered a quality or trophy-sized catch. These are angling conventions, not universal scientific categories.
What is the biggest walleye ever caught?
The IGFA all-tackle record is 25 pounds, 0 ounces. FishBase lists a maximum reported length of about 42.1 inches fork length and a maximum published weight of about 24.9 pounds.
Do female walleye get bigger than males?
Yes. Female walleye generally grow faster and reach larger sizes than males, so very large older walleye are more likely to be female. Size alone cannot reliably identify an individual fish’s sex.
How should you measure a walleye?
Use a measuring board or mat, place the snout against the end stop, keep the fish straight, and extend the tail naturally. Record weight separately with a suitable scale; length does not prove weight.
The Bottom Line
Most walleye are 12–30 inches long and weigh 1–10 pounds. A 20-inch fish is a respectable adult, a 25-inch fish is notably large, and a 30-inch or 10-pound walleye is exceptional. The largest record-class walleye reach roughly 42 inches and 25 pounds, but length-to-weight estimates vary substantially by fish and water body.
