You may also see claims that a tigerfish reached 154 pounds (70 kilograms), or even that giant tigerfish can weigh 132 pounds (60 kilograms). Those figures have not been authenticated to the standard of the IGFA record. The most accurate short answer is therefore: 97 pounds is the largest verified record; 154 pounds is an unconfirmed reported maximum.

Which species was the record fish?
The record fish was not the southern African tigerfish that many anglers know from the Zambezi, Chobe, Okavango and related waters. It was the much larger giant tigerfish, Hydrocynus goliath.
The genus Hydrocynus contains several African tigerfish species. The southern African tigerfish is generally identified as Hydrocynus vittatus, while H. goliath is associated primarily with the central and upper Congo drainage, including the Congo and Lualaba systems and Lake Upemba. Because the species have different distributions and maximum sizes, their catches should not be combined into one record.
Goliath tigerfish are powerful freshwater predators with large teeth, muscular bodies and a reputation for attacking fish and artificial lures. Their size and appearance have made them one of Africa’s most famous freshwater game fish, but a dramatic photograph or a large estimated specimen is not automatically an official record.
Why is 154 pounds often quoted?
Many general-interest articles describe a 154-pound (70-kilogram) goliath tigerfish as the largest ever recorded, sometimes adding an approximate length of 2 meters. The problem is not that a fish of that size is biologically impossible; it is that the claim does not have the same publicly documented authentication as the 97-pound IGFA record.

IGFA’s species information specifically warns that stories of giant tigerfish weighing as much as 132 pounds (60 kilograms) have not been authenticated. That makes it misleading to present either 132 or 154 pounds as a confirmed world record.
FishBase provides a more conservative published species reference: a maximum published weight of 50 kilograms and a maximum published fork length of 133 centimeters for H. goliath. This does not prove that no larger individual has ever existed. It does show why the 70-kilogram claim needs a qualification: it is substantially above the documented biological reference and lacks comparable record evidence.
The 154-pound figure could reflect an old field report, an estimate from a photograph, a rounded weight, a fish measured under undocumented conditions, or confusion involving identification or measurement. Without a verifiable record sheet and supporting evidence, it should be described as an unverified report, not the confirmed largest tigerfish.
Three different meanings of “largest”
The disagreement becomes clearer when “recorded” is separated into three categories:

- Easy Catch Design – Trembly Sinking + Vibrating Swim. The Shadtale delivers two actions in one lure: steady retrieve triggers a tight vibrating swim with paddle tail kick; jigging hops create a unique trembling fall. This combination triggers strikes from curious and aggressive fish alike
- Unique Trembly Sinking – Trembles All the Way Down. After each jigging hop, the Shadtale doesn't just drop – it trembles. This high‑frequency vibration during the fall mimics a stunned or injured baitfish, drawing reaction bites even from pressured bass, trout, crappie, and walleye
- Vibrating Swim Action – Steady Retrieve, Solid Vibration. Reel it in at a constant speed, and the paddle tail produces a powerful, tight vibrating swim. The lifelike shad profile and tail kick send out water displacement that predator fish can't resist – perfect for covering water
- BKK Premium Hooks – Ready to Fish. Equipped with sharp, corrosion‑resistant BKK hooks straight from the factory. No need to upgrade – these hooks penetrate deep and hold firm, giving you confidence on every hookset
- Multi‑Lure Pack – Multiple Colors, Better Value, Any Water Condition. Each pack contains multiple Shadtale lures in a variety of colors. Dark colors for murky/low‑light water, light colors for clear/bright conditions – you'll always have the right color for the moment. More lures, less cost per bait, and great for family fishing trips
- Official angling record: 97 pounds (44 kilograms), Houtmans’ 1988 IGFA all-tackle catch.
- Published biological maximum: FishBase lists up to 50 kilograms and 133 centimeters fork length for the species.
- Frequently repeated but unauthenticated report: approximately 154 pounds (70 kilograms), sometimes paired with a length of about 2 meters.
These are not interchangeable measurements. An official sport-fishing record documents a particular catch under a record organization’s rules. A biological database may compile a published maximum without claiming that it is an angling record. A general-audience article may repeat a large estimate without supplying enough evidence to verify it.
Why the length is harder to state precisely
The weight of the Houtmans fish is clearly reported in the IGFA material, but an exact length for that particular fish should not be added unless the original record documentation supplies it. Length measurements also vary according to method:
- Fork length runs from the snout to the fork in the tail.
- Total length runs to the longest point of the tail.
- Estimated length may be inferred from a photograph or an informal account.
FishBase’s 133-centimeter figure is a maximum published fork length for the species. It is not necessarily the length of the 1988 record fish. Nor should it be converted into a claimed total length without knowing the measurement method.

Goliath tigerfish are exceptionally large freshwater predators, but descriptions of their maximum size depend on the source and on whether the specimen was weighed, measured, or estimated. FishBase lists 50 kilograms as the maximum published weight and 133 centimeters as the maximum published fork length. IGFA describes the species as capable of exceeding 110 pounds in exceptional cases while distinguishing those accounts from authenticated record catches.

That distinction matters: “can exceed” or “has been reported at” is not the same as “the official record is.” For a reliable answer, the 97-pound figure should remain the headline number.

No. Television presenter Jeremy Wade caught a very large goliath tigerfish while filming River Monsters. Popular descriptions put the fish at roughly 5 feet long and around 100 pounds, but those figures were estimates associated with the television catch, and the fish was not recognized as the IGFA all-tackle world record.

A televised catch can be remarkable without replacing a certified record: record organizations require specific documentation, weighing procedures and compliance with tackle rules. A fish estimated at about 100 pounds is not automatically heavier—or more fully verified—than a documented 97-pound record.

The most accurate answer
If you need one sentence, use this:
The largest verified tigerfish was a 97-pound (44-kilogram) goliath tigerfish caught by Raymond Houtmans in the Congo’s Zaire River on July 9, 1988; reports of 154-pound tigerfish exist, but that larger figure has not been authenticated as an official record.
This wording preserves the important distinction between a documented world record and a larger claim that remains uncertain. It also avoids confusing the giant tigerfish with Hydrocynus vittatus, treating an estimated length as a measured one, or presenting a television catch as a certified record.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much did the biggest verified tigerfish weigh?
The largest officially authenticated tigerfish weighed 97 pounds (44 kilograms). It was a giant tigerfish, or goliath tigerfish (Hydrocynus goliath), caught by Raymond Houtmans in the Zaire River near Kinshasa on July 9, 1988.
Did Jeremy Wade catch the world-record tigerfish?
No. Jeremy Wade’s fish was widely described as approximately 100 pounds, but it was not recognized as the IGFA all-tackle world record. The official record remained Houtmans’ documented 97-pound catch.
Is the 154-pound tigerfish claim real?
The 154-pound (70-kilogram) figure is a frequently repeated but unauthenticated report. IGFA notes that larger stories, including claims up to 132 pounds, have not been authenticated, while FishBase lists a maximum published weight of 50 kilograms.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The largest officially authenticated tigerfish is the 97-pound (44-kilogram) goliath tigerfish caught by Raymond Houtmans in 1988. A 154-pound (70-kilogram) specimen is often reported, but it has not been verified to the same standard and should not be called the official world record.
