How Big Should a Jumping Spider’s Food Be? Safe Prey-Size Rules Explained

Jumping spiders can sometimes catch larger insects, but captive-care guidance recommends prey no larger than the spider—and often about the abdomen’s size—to reduce injury risk.

Jumping-spider food does not have to be the spider’s exact size or slightly larger. The safer captive-care rule is to offer prey no larger than the spider, with prey about the size of its abdomen (or a little smaller) as a conservative target. A jumping spider may overpower a larger insect, but a successful attack in the wild does not mean an oversized cricket is safe to leave in a small enclosure. Large, biting prey can injure a spider, particularly when it is about to molt or has just molted.

What “same size” means in practice

Care sheets use slightly different comparisons. The Royal Veterinary Center says never to offer prey larger than the spider’s body. Exotic Pet Vets gives a more conservative rule of approximately the spider’s abdomen. Neither guide establishes one universal measuring method, and neither means that the feeder should match the spider’s full leg span.

Use the spider’s solid body as your reference, not the distance from one leg tip to another. When you are uncertain, choose the smaller feeder. An abdomen-sized or slightly smaller insect gives the spider a manageable target while leaving less opportunity for the prey to kick, bite or escape into a hiding place.

  • Spiderlings: use very small feeders, such as flightless fruit flies, that they can subdue without wrestling.
  • Small juveniles: move up only when the spider consistently handles its current prey easily.
  • Adults: appropriately small flies or crickets can work, but “adult” does not make an oversized feeder safe.

The individual spider, feeder species and molt condition all matter. A feeder that is suitable for one spider may be too large or too dangerous for another of the same species.

Why prey size affects safety

The spider has to subdue the insect, not merely reach it

Jumping spiders are active hunters with excellent vision and the ability to leap onto moving prey. Catching an insect is only the first step. The spider must hold it, deliver venom and avoid being struck while the prey struggles. A large insect has more leverage and more room to kick or bite. If the spider abandons the attack, the live feeder remains a hazard inside the enclosure.

This is why a conservative size rule is more useful than asking whether a spider is physically capable of attacking something larger. Capture ability varies with species, age, condition and the feeder’s behavior. The safest routine minimizes the consequences of a failed attack.

Crickets and mealworms can fight back

Veterinary care guidance specifically warns that large live crickets can injure jumping spiders. Crickets and mealworms can also bite. Their risk is not limited to the moment of capture: an uneaten insect may contact a resting spider, disturb it repeatedly or remain hidden until the spider is vulnerable.

Never treat a feeder as harmless because it is sold for reptiles or other invertebrates. A prey item that is acceptable for a larger animal can be dangerous to a small jumping spider.

Molting changes the risk completely

Before and during a molt, a jumping spider is less able to defend itself. Its behavior may change, it may retreat and it should not be pressured to hunt. Do not offer live prey during a molt. Exotic Pet Vets advises waiting at least two to four days after the molt before feeding or handling, allowing the new outer covering time to harden.

If a spider has sealed itself into a retreat, refuses food or appears unusually inactive, remove live feeders rather than trying to coax an attack. A missed meal is less dangerous than an insect left with a vulnerable spider.

Can a jumping spider eat prey larger than itself?

Sometimes, yes. Wild jumping spiders can attack prey that looks surprisingly large, and keepers may observe an individual taking an insect longer than its body. That observation does not establish a safe routine for every captive spider.

Toshinori Okuyama’s 2007 field study, Prey of two species of jumping spiders in the field, examined Phidippus audax and Salticus scenicus. It found that prey-size distributions were related to spider size and suggested morphological constraints: smaller spiders cannot attack large prey as readily. The study describes prey use in the field, not a recommended feeder ratio for pets. It also does not show that a large live cricket is safe in an enclosure.

Wild prey choice and captive feeding have different consequences. A wild spider can retreat, change hunting sites or abandon a dangerous insect. In a container, the prey and spider share a confined space. For that reason, use the field study as context for why size matters, not as permission to routinely exceed the care-sheet limit.

Choosing a feeder by size and risk

Size is the first filter, but it is not the only one. Consider whether the feeder can bite, how quickly it moves, whether the spider is a sling or adult and where the insect came from.

Feeder example When it can fit Main caution
Flightless fruit flies Very small spiderlings and other spiders needing tiny prey Use only while the spider can manage prey this small; they are not a universal food for larger spiders.
Flies Spiders whose body size allows them to capture and hold the fly Match the fly to the individual spider rather than choosing by the word “fly” alone.
Small crickets Only when clearly no larger than the spider and offered under supervision Crickets can bite; a large live cricket can injure a spider.
Mealworms Only when the individual feeder is appropriately small and the spider can subdue it Mealworms can bite and should not be left unattended.

These examples come from jumping-spider care guidance, but they are not interchangeable. A fast fly, a hard-bodied cricket and a worm behave differently even when their lengths look similar. If the prey is unusually active, heavily armed or difficult for the spider to grip, select a smaller or less hazardous option.

How to offer food safely

  1. Estimate the spider’s body size. Compare the feeder with the spider’s body or abdomen, not its outstretched legs. If the comparison is close, go smaller.
  2. Check the spider’s condition. Do not feed during a molt, when it is in a sealed retreat or when it has just molted. Follow the two-to-four-day post-molt waiting period advised by Exotic Pet Vets before feeding or handling.
  3. Use a known, clean source. Buy feeders from a reputable store or maintain a well-kept feeder colony. Do not collect insects outdoors: wild-caught prey may carry pesticide residues or other contamination.
  4. Place only a manageable feeder in the enclosure. A single appropriately sized insect lets you see whether the spider engages and reduces the chance of an unseen threat.
  5. Observe the interaction. If the spider attacks, watch whether it can hold the prey. If it retreats, repeatedly misses or shows no interest, do not force the encounter.
  6. Remove anything uneaten. Take out a cricket, mealworm or other live insect that is not accepted, especially before the spider enters a retreat or molt.

Feeding frequency is separate from feeder size. Life stage, recent meals, temperature and individual behavior affect how often a spider eats, and care sources do not provide one schedule that applies to every jumping spider. Keep the size decision conservative even when you are adjusting the schedule.

Warning signs that the feeder is too large or too risky

  • The insect is longer or bulkier than the spider’s body and has obvious biting or kicking ability.
  • The spider approaches, then repeatedly retreats without being able to hold the prey.
  • The feeder remains active after the spider has abandoned the attack.
  • The spider is entering a retreat, showing pre-molt behavior or has recently shed.
  • You cannot identify where the insect came from or whether it may have contacted pesticides.

In any of these situations, remove the feeder. Do not leave it overnight on the assumption that the spider will eventually eat it.

Common mistakes and better decisions

“The spider killed a larger insect once, so larger prey is fine.”

One successful hunt shows what that individual managed on that occasion. It does not account for a different feeder, a weaker spider or a molt approaching. Return to the no-larger-than-the-body rule for routine care.

“Same size” means the spider’s leg span

Leg span can make a feeder look tiny by comparison. The care guidance compares prey with the body, and one veterinary source specifically uses the abdomen. Measure against the compact body instead.

“The feeder is sold as live food, so it cannot hurt the spider.”

Live food is still an animal capable of biting or injuring its intended predator. Large crickets and mealworms deserve particular caution, and supervision is part of safe feeding.

“A wild insect is free and convenient.”

Convenience does not remove pesticide and contamination risks. Use a reputable supplier or a well-maintained colony instead.

“The spider has not eaten, so I should offer a much larger insect.”

Refusal can reflect molt, stress, recent feeding or a mismatch between spider and feeder. Increasing danger is not a reliable solution. Remove the insect and reassess the spider’s condition before trying a smaller, suitable feeder later.

A simple decision rule

Before releasing any feeder, ask four questions:

  1. Is it no larger than the spider’s body, and preferably about the abdomen’s size or smaller?
  2. Can this prey bite, sting, kick or otherwise injure the spider?
  3. Is the spider actively hunting rather than molting or hiding in a retreat?
  4. Did the feeder come from a reputable, uncontaminated source?

If the answer to any question is uncertain, choose a smaller feeder, wait or remove the insect. This approach respects the difference between what a jumping spider might overpower and what is prudent to place with it in captivity.

What the size rule protects

The recommendation is not a demand for mathematical precision. It is a margin of safety. Prey close to the spider’s abdomen or smaller is easier to subdue, less able to injure the spider and easier for a keeper to monitor. The rule also leaves room for individual variation: species, life stage, prey behavior and molt condition can all change the outcome.

For routine care, select appropriately small, responsibly sourced feeders; supervise live prey; and remove anything that is not taken. A jumping spider may occasionally capture something larger, but conservative sizing is the safer standard for its enclosure.
