Buford was beside Boden at the ranch entrance
Dunton described Buford as his Anatolian Pyrenees guardian dog, who patrolled at night to deter coyotes. He said he saw Buford sitting by the entrance with Boden standing nearby. Boden reportedly told Dunton he had slept under a tree and answered yes when asked whether the dog had found him.
Dunton believed Buford found the boy, stayed with him and brought him toward the ranch. He said, “He loves kids so I can imagine he wouldn’t leave him when he found him.” That is Dunton’s interpretation, not a documented account of their full journey.
Jeff Newnum, chief deputy of the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office, was quoted as saying: “This dog did not obviously view Boden as a threat, but realized that there was something wrong, and instinctively went to this child.” The account supports that Buford was with Boden when he was found and that Dunton and the sheriff’s office credited the dog with helping. It does not establish the precise route or every action Buford took.

Dunton emphasized the difficulty of the journey, saying, “I can’t believe that kid made it that far, it’s seven miles and that’s if he walked in a straight line.”

A dangerous night ended with Boden reunited with his family
Reports say Boden spent at least part of the night under a tree and had a scrape on his arm when he was found. He was reunited with his family. Searchers’ reported mountain-lion sightings underscore that the search took place in challenging terrain, but there is no report that a mountain lion came into contact with Boden.
Buford and Boden later received recognition
The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office later presented Buford with an honorary search-and-rescue certificate and vest and arranged a reunion with Boden. Boden also received recognition, according to reports. The honorary certificate does not establish that Buford was a trained search-and-rescue dog.
Why the story should be told carefully
The available reporting supports a remarkable but carefully bounded account: Boden went missing overnight, reached a ranch roughly seven miles from home, and was found with Buford. Dunton believed the dog found and guided the boy. No public account establishes the exact route, how long they were together, or every step of the rescue.
