Allorubbing (rubbing against another cat) and allogrooming (grooming another cat) can exchange odors; facial rubbing and scratching add scent to the environment. The result is an evolving mix of smells from cats, people, furniture, and other household objects—not one fixed “family scent.”
What “group scent” means
In households and other settings where cats form social groups, familiar odors can help maintain the group’s shared identity. Researchers interpret behaviors such as affiliative rubbing and frequent sniffing as helping maintain a colony odor, though its chemical composition and exact formation are not fully decoded. The phrase “group scent” is best understood as an accumulation of individual and environmental odors.

The AAFP and ISFM describe the household collective odor as including scents from feline and human individuals as well as inanimate objects such as furniture and carpeting. That means a cat’s familiar environment contributes to the group’s overall smell, alongside odors exchanged directly between cats. AAFP and ISFM house-soiling guidelines

How cats exchange and deposit scent
| Behavior | What receives the odor | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Allorubbing | Another cat | Friendly social contact that provides an opportunity to exchange odors |
| Allogrooming | Another cat | Affiliative grooming that brings cats into close contact |
| Facial or body rubbing | Objects or areas | Environmental scent marking |
| Scratching | Surfaces | Environmental marking as well as scratching behavior |
| Urine spraying | Objects or areas | A distinct marking behavior, not the ordinary route to a shared scent between friendly cats |
Allorubbing and allogrooming are associated with friendly relationships and create close opportunities for odor exchange. A cat may also rub its face or body on household objects, and scratching leaves odors in shared spaces. Together, social contact and environmental marking contribute to a familiar olfactory profile. Why cats rub against each other
Rubbing against a familiar cat is an affiliative behavior: it is associated with friendly social relationships and allows the cats to exchange odors through close contact. Researchers have interpreted allorubbing, along with sniffing, as a way cats maintain a colony odor. It should not be taken as proof that every rub has one precise scent-marking purpose; it is a social interaction that can contribute to shared familiarity. Crowell-Davis, Curtis, and Knowles, “Social organization in the cat”
Why a returning cat may smell unfamiliar
A cat returning home after an absence may carry odors that are unfamiliar to its housemates. AAFP and ISFM guidance recommends allowing the returning cat to regain the group scent before it encounters the other cats. The guidance does not specify a universal waiting time, so use the cats’ circumstances and behavior rather than assuming a fixed number of hours or days. AAFP and ISFM house-soiling guidelines

Urine spraying is a separate form of marking. It should not be presented as the normal way friendly cats develop a shared group odor, which is associated with affiliative contact and odors deposited in the environment. If a cat starts spraying, consider behavioral and environmental causes separately; persistent marking or conflict between cats is a reason to seek veterinary guidance.
