Care for a senior dog works best as a routine tailored to that dog: regular veterinary visits, attention to changes at home, and practical adjustments to food, activity, dental care, and comfort. Age alone does not explain a new symptom or determine which treatment is right.

When is a dog considered a senior?

There is no single birthday that marks the start of old age for every dog. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) defines a senior dog as one in the last 25% of its estimated lifespan. Size and health matter: AAHA gives examples of some large dogs entering the senior stage around 7 to 8 years, while some smaller dogs may not be considered senior until around 12. These are examples, not universal cutoffs. AAHA’s 2023 senior-care guidelines emphasize individualized care and the point that “old age is not a disease.”

How often should a senior dog see the veterinarian?

AAHA recommends veterinary examinations every six months for dogs older than 7, even when they seem healthy. Your veterinarian can adapt the schedule to your dog’s age, health, and circumstances. A visit may include a physical and dental examination, a discussion of nutrition and behavior, and tests chosen for that dog—not an identical test package for every senior pet. AAHA describes a workup for a healthy senior pet once or twice a year that may include a complete blood count, chemistry panel, and urinalysis. AAHA’s senior-pet care recommendations and its guidance on evaluating the healthy senior pet outline these considerations.

What to bring up at a checkup

Describe what has changed and when. Useful details include your dog’s appetite and drinking, movement and exercise, play, elimination, attitude, grooming, and any changes in vision or hearing. Bring a complete list of medications, supplements, topical products, and other therapies; “natural” does not guarantee a product is safe, and combinations can cause interactions or toxicity. Ask which screening tests, vaccinations, and parasite-prevention measures fit your dog’s health and lifestyle.

Which changes should you report?

Do not assume a new or worsening problem is simply normal aging. AAHA lists the following among possible signs of chronic disease; none identifies a diagnosis by itself. Record when a change began, whether it is progressing, and any details that may help your veterinarian assess it. Contact the veterinary clinic for advice about the change.

  • Progressive lethargy or a change in behavior or personality
  • Reduced appetite, refusal to eat, or altered thirst
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Changes in mobility, stiffness, limping, or reluctance to jump
  • Wounds that do not heal

These signs can have different causes, so their significance depends on the dog and the clinical assessment. See AAHA’s guidance on evaluating an unhealthy senior pet.

How should food and body condition change with age?

Choose food according to your dog’s body condition and health, rather than switching automatically to a product labeled “senior.” AAHA discusses lower-calorie, high-fiber diets as one possible approach to help prevent weight gain, high-protein diets to support muscle mass, and therapeutic diets for some chronic conditions. Which approach is appropriate depends on the individual dog and should be discussed with the veterinarian. Do not start a supplement or make a major diet change on the assumption that all older dogs need the same thing.

How can you adapt exercise and mobility care?

Keep activity suited to your dog’s energy, mobility, and health. AAHA describes regular low-impact activity as a way that may support muscle strength and joint flexibility, as well as mental enrichment and stress reduction. The guidance does not set one duration or intensity for every dog. Ask the veterinarian what is appropriate if your dog’s movement or stamina changes; stiffness, limping, or reluctance to jump may warrant a discussion about pain and treatment options.

Make everyday movement safer

Choose home changes according to the specific problem and your dog’s ability to use them safely. A ramp or steps may help with access; nonslip surfaces may improve traction; an orthopedic bed may provide a more comfortable resting place. A harness or sling may be worth discussing if your dog needs support moving around. These are optional aids, not treatments for the cause of pain or mobility loss. Consider the layout of the home and whether your dog can navigate each change without added risk.

What helps a senior dog stay comfortable at home?

When mobility or sensory changes make navigation harder, consider removing obstructions, improving lighting, and gating stairs if they are unsafe. Scent markers may help some dogs orient themselves. Make changes in response to your dog’s needs rather than adding equipment by default; an aid is useful only if the dog can use it comfortably and safely. Tell the veterinarian about difficulty getting up, moving through the home, or settling to rest, since environmental adjustments do not replace assessment of an underlying problem.

How should you care for an older dog’s teeth?

Oral health needs attention throughout a dog’s life, and dental disease is more common in senior pets. Ask the veterinarian about a dental assessment and whether professional cleaning, dental radiographs, toothbrushing, or a dental diet belongs in your dog’s plan. Bad breath, difficulty eating, facial swelling, or pawing at the mouth are reasons to raise dental health with the clinic. Toothbrushes and other home-care supplies do not substitute for an examination or treatment when disease is present. AAHA’s senior-pet recommendations cover oral care.

What if your dog seems confused or behaves differently?

Confusion, anxiety, and changes in behavior or personality can occur with cognitive decline, but they can also have other causes, including pain or illness. Tell the veterinarian what you are seeing rather than assuming it is cognitive dysfunction. Depending on the assessment, veterinary-guided options may include medication, environmental enrichment, or nutrition. Puzzle toys and interactive play can provide enrichment; they are not established as a way to prevent or cure cognitive decline. AAHA discusses these issues in its 2023 senior-care executive summary.

Do senior dogs still need vaccines and parasite prevention?

Preventive care remains part of senior care, but the right plan depends on the dog’s lifestyle and circumstances. Ask the veterinarian which vaccinations and parasite-prevention measures are appropriate; do not infer a schedule from age alone. AAHA’s consumer guidance discusses core vaccines and year-round flea, tick, and heartworm prevention as possibilities, not as a one-size-fits-all prescription.

When should you discuss comfort and future care?

For a dog with a chronic or terminal illness, it can help to talk with the veterinarian early about comfort, care goals, and what changes to expect if the condition progresses. AAHA includes palliative and hospice planning, along with caregiver support, in senior care. A dog’s age by itself is not a reason to stop assessing symptoms or considering treatment; decisions should reflect the dog’s condition and quality of life.
