Cats often hunt around dawn and dusk, not only at night. Stalking and catching prey is a natural behavior that can continue even when a cat is well fed, and bringing a mouse indoors does not necessarily mean your cat is offering a “gift.” Safe indoor play can give that hunting instinct an outlet; keeping cats inside during peak activity reduces their chances to hunt outdoors. If poison exposure is possible, contact a veterinarian immediately.
Why does my cat bring in mice?
Hunting is a natural instinct in cats, although some cats do not hunt. Cats Protection behaviorist Nicky Trevorrow explains that cats may bring prey back to their core territory, often the home. That behavior is not proof that the cat is trying to give its owner a present.

Hunting is not necessarily driven by hunger. Cats Protection says it is not necessarily influenced by how much a cat has eaten, and veterinary behaviorists at VCA note that even well-fed cats may stalk when they hear or see potential prey. Food and hunting are separate motivations, though this does not mean every cat will hunt.

How cats hunt—and why owners notice it at night
A cat may orient toward movement or sound, stalk, chase, pounce, and capture its target. The pattern can vary; it is not a fixed sequence that every cat follows. Moving objects can attract a cat’s attention, which is why prey-like toys can engage the same behaviors.

Cats are commonly most active for hunting and exploration around dawn and dusk, a pattern called crepuscular activity. Cats Protection describes those hours as prime hunting times for rodents and other small prey, and VCA behaviorists also identify dusk and dawn as common activity peaks. Individual cats and household routines differ, so activity at night is still possible—it just is not the only time cats hunt.
How to give an indoor cat a safe hunting outlet
Use interactive toys that can be caught
Guide a wand or fishing-rod toy like prey, letting your cat stalk, chase, pounce, and catch it. Toy mice and other small stuffed toys can also give a cat an object to catch and carry. Let the cat make a successful catch at the end of play rather than keeping the toy permanently out of reach.

Add food-search activities
Make part of the cat’s normal ration more engaging by scattering it, hiding small portions for the cat to find, or using a food puzzle. A purchased puzzle is optional; simple homemade food-search activities can provide the same kind of foraging opportunity.

Keep play safe
- Supervise wand-toy play and put the toy away when the session ends.
- Avoid loose string and toys with feathers or small parts that can detach and be swallowed.
- If your cat’s behavior changes suddenly or unusually, talk to a veterinarian; illness or pain can cause behavior changes.
How to reduce outdoor hunting
Keeping a cat indoors at dawn and dusk reduces opportunities to hunt when prey is commonly active. Cats Protection also recommends keeping cats indoors at night for safety, including to reduce exposure to road traffic injury and other nighttime hazards. Indoor periods and interactive play are alternatives to relying on a collar accessory alone.

What bells can—and cannot—do
A bell may reduce hunting success in some settings, but it is not a guarantee. Cornell’s summary of a University of Glasgow study reports that 41 pet cats known to bring home prey delivered 82 mammals, 26 birds, and 10 amphibians while wearing bells, compared with 167 mammals, 48 birds, and 11 amphibians without bells over the study periods. Cornell says the bell-equipped cats delivered about half as many mammals and birds over that timescale. These are study counts, not a prediction of what a bell will do for every cat.
If you choose a bell, use a properly fitted quick-release collar: collars and accessories can snag. Cats Protection notes that bells may reduce birds caught, but keeping a cat inside during peak activity and providing play are other ways to address hunting opportunities.

What to do if a mouse may have encountered poison
Rodenticides can seriously harm cats. If your cat may have eaten a poisoned rodent or accessed bait, treat it as a possible poisoning and seek veterinary care immediately. Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinarian specifically instructs you to do so. Possible effects depend on the poison and exposure, so a veterinarian should assess the situation.
