Cats have several measurable spatial skills, but that does not mean they can always find their way home. Studies show that cats can remember locations, choose routes in controlled settings, locate sounds, and use an owner’s voice to infer where that person is. Those abilities are pieces of orientation—not proof of a reliable internal compass or a guarantee that a lost cat can return from anywhere.
What does “sense of direction” mean in cats?
The phrase can refer to different abilities: remembering where something is, selecting a route, working out where a sound comes from, or navigating over a long distance. Cat studies have tested some of these component skills under controlled conditions. They have not established how often cats successfully find their way home in real-world circumstances.

That distinction matters: a cat’s success in a maze or hidden-object task does not directly answer whether it can return home after getting lost or being moved to an unfamiliar place.
How do cats remember where things are?
They can use their own position and the room layout
In four experiments on domestic cats, Fiset and Doré tested how cats located a hidden object when different spatial cues were available. Cats mainly used information based on their own position when that cue was useful. When a detour made it unreliable, they used the relationships between the room’s walls and the hiding place instead. The authors described this as flexible spatial encoding.

This suggests cats can draw on more than one kind of spatial cue in a defined setting. It does not show that they maintain a universal map or compass that works in every environment. Fiset and Doré, Journal of Experimental Psychology: Animal Behavior Processes, 1996.
Hidden-object searches have limits
A 1990 invisible-displacement experiment found that cats did not solve the tested problems in which an object’s movement was hidden from view. Their searches were guided mainly by where they had last seen the object disappear or by the nearest cover. Training in visible-displacement tasks improved performance, and experience with hiding covers increased persistence.

Can cats choose a route?
In a cue-controlled maze study, Bruno Poucet tested two groups of six cats in cross-mazes with a visual cue. The experiment examined spatial behavior in a controlled setting. It supports a narrow conclusion: cats can make route choices when the task provides defined cues. A maze study does not establish that cats can navigate an unfamiliar outdoor area or reliably return home.

Sound localization
In laboratory tests, cats trained to look toward sound sources could localize noise bursts, clicks, and click trains within their oculomotor range. Their responses to auditory targets were less accurate and more variable than their responses to visual targets at corresponding positions. This demonstrates sound localization under the study’s conditions, not long-range navigation.

Inferring an owner’s location from their voice
In a 2021 experiment, cats heard vocalizations played from speakers in different locations. They showed their strongest surprise when their owner’s familiar voice seemed to appear unexpectedly somewhere else. The same response was not found with familiar cats’ vocalizations or non-vocal sounds. The authors interpreted the behavior as evidence that cats represent an unseen owner’s location based on that person’s voice—a behavioral inference, not direct access to a cat’s thoughts.

The familiar-cat vocalization experiment included 45 cats. That is a study sample, not an estimate of how all cats behave. Takagi and colleagues, PLOS ONE, November 10, 2021.
What do these findings say about a cat finding its way home?
They show that cats can use spatial information in several specific ways. Those abilities may contribute to orientation, but the studies described here tested hidden-object searches, controlled route choices, sound localization, or responses to a familiar voice. They did not measure how reliably cats return home after becoming lost or being displaced.
So it is reasonable to say cats have spatial skills. It is not established by these studies that cats always know where they are or can reliably find home from anywhere. The evidence cited here also provides no population-wide success rate for cats’ homing.
