If your dog is nearing the end of life or has just died, you do not have to make every decision alone. A veterinarian can help you assess comfort, understand what may happen next, and compare hospice-supported care with euthanasia without treating either choice as a measure of how much you love your dog.
Start with comfort and a conversation with your veterinarian
Signs such as difficulty breathing, persistent pain, trouble eating or drinking, difficulty standing or walking, withdrawal, or repeated medical crises deserve a prompt conversation with a veterinarian. They do not, by themselves, diagnose a condition or determine when euthanasia is right. Ask directly: “Is my pet suffering? How do you know? What is the best way to alleviate that?” (AAHA’s end-of-life care guidance, updated May 19, 2026.)

A useful assessment looks at the whole dog, including pain, eating and drinking, breathing, elimination, mobility, and interest in people and surroundings. Ask what changes are likely as the illness progresses, which signs may indicate distress, and what can realistically be managed. A daily comfort log can help you notice changes and explain them to the veterinary team; it is an observation aid, not a diagnostic test.
Understand the care options
The decision depends on your dog’s condition and likely disease course, what symptoms can be controlled, the support available, and your family’s values. Ask the veterinarian to explain the likely benefits and burdens for your dog rather than relying on a generic quality-of-life score.

| Option | What it means | What to discuss |
|---|---|---|
| Palliative care | Symptom and pain management that may accompany treatment directed at the disease. It can include guidance on symptoms and, when appropriate, physical or rehabilitation therapy. | Which symptoms can be relieved, what treatment involves, and how comfort will be monitored. |
| Hospice | Veterinary-guided care in the final life stage, focused on comfort, planning for decline or crises, and caregiver support. | How suffering will be prevented or relieved, what to do if symptoms worsen, and when the plan should be reassessed. |
| Humane euthanasia | A veterinary option intended to prevent or end suffering. It may be available at a veterinary hospital or at home, depending on local services and the veterinarian. | What to expect, which setting is available and suitable, and how the team can make the experience calmer for your dog and family. |
| Hospice-supported natural death | Care through natural death with veterinary oversight and effective measures to relieve discomfort and distress. | How symptoms will be managed and what will happen if suffering cannot be controlled. |
The AAHA/IAAHPC 2016 End-of-Life Care Guidelines state: “Both euthanasia and hospice-supported natural death are medically and ethically acceptable options in veterinary EOL care and animal hospice.” The statement is about collaborative decisions with palliative measures that protect the animal from suffering; it is not an endorsement of leaving symptoms untreated. (AAHA, “Courageous conversations: euthanasia versus natural death,” May 14, 2019.)
AAHA cautions that allowing a pet to die without effective palliative measures is not acceptable care. If you are considering natural death, ask the veterinarian what oversight and symptom relief would be needed in your dog’s circumstances. (AAHA, “Palliative Care or Hospice?”, December 13, 2022.)

Make a plan for the days ahead
Ask your veterinarian to help you prepare for both ordinary days and a sudden change. A plan tailored to your dog can cover:
- Likely disease progression and signs of pain, distress, or a medical crisis.
- Comfort measures and medications, including how and when to use them.
- Who to contact and where to go if symptoms cannot be controlled.
- How the plan will be adjusted if eating, drinking, breathing, mobility, elimination, or engagement changes.
At home, ask whether changes such as easy access to food and water, nonslip surfaces, comfortable bedding, help with hygiene, or adjustments for temperature could improve comfort. Follow veterinary advice, especially if a change might make movement or breathing harder.

If your dog is comfortable enough to enjoy it, a quiet favorite activity or time with close family may make a day feel personal. The right choice depends on mobility, symptoms, and your veterinarian’s guidance; a familiar outing is not worth it if it causes discomfort. AAHA offers examples of simple ways to spend time together in its guide to making a pet’s last day special.
Choosing where euthanasia happens
Some veterinarians offer euthanasia at home, while others provide it at the clinic; availability depends on local services and the veterinarian. Neither setting is automatically best. Consider what is feasible for your dog’s condition and what would feel calm and manageable for the people present.

Ask the veterinary team what the process will involve, what you may see, who can be present, and how they can accommodate your dog’s needs. If an in-home visit is unavailable or not appropriate, ask how the clinic can reduce stress. The purpose of these questions is to help you prepare, not to require a particular setting.

Remembrance is personal. If it feels right, you might write a letter, make a photo album or journal, plant a memorial tree, or keep a paw print, nose print, fur clipping, or another keepsake. These are options, not steps you need to complete. (AAHA’s end-of-life care guidance; AVMA, “Remembering Your Pet”.)
Grief, guilt, and supporting someone who is grieving
Grief after losing a dog is real. It may include sadness, guilt, or second-guessing decisions, including whether you acted at the right time. There is no single timetable or required sequence for grieving. A veterinary team can help answer questions about your dog’s care and suggest support.
If you or someone close to you is struggling, consider reaching out to a pet-loss support group, grief hotline, veterinary school counseling service, or a trained grief-support professional. The AVMA’s “When Will the Grief Go Away?” and AAHA’s end-of-life care resource offer further guidance. Listening without minimizing the loss or setting a deadline can also help when supporting a grieving family member.
