Comet’s story is a case study in fit, patience and consistent care—not proof that every difficult adoption will resolve quickly. The four-year-old, 60-pound coonhound mix had spent six months at Salt Lake County Animal Services with notes about counter-surfing, pulling and zig-zagging on leash, howling at other dogs and an early potty-training problem. A foster caregiver established routines, worked on walks and calmly redirected him around dogs. He then moved to an adopter whose time, outdoor interests and gradual approach to alone-time matched what Comet needed.
The account, published by Best Friends Animal Society on June 2, 2020, is a human-interest profile of one dog. Its reported timelines—progress within days and calmer approaches to dogs within a week—belong to Comet and are not guarantees for another hound, another shelter dog or another household. Read it as a way to evaluate a prospective adoption honestly: identify the work, compare the dog’s needs with your daily life and arrange support before problems become crises.

Comet’s starting point
When Best Friends Animal Society profiled him, Comet was a four-year-old, 60-pound coonhound mix who had spent six months at Salt Lake County Animal Services. His shelter notes described several behaviors that can make a dog harder to place:
- He searched counters for food.
- He had not learned to walk politely on a leash.
- He pulled and zig-zagged strongly enough to trip a person walking him.
- He howled when he saw other dogs.
- A first foster placement ended within a day after a potty-training problem.
Those notes accurately recorded what staff had observed, but they did not explain what Comet could become in a different setting. Linnea Scott, a lifesaving and care specialist quoted in the feature, said, “It was clear all Comet needed was consistency and someone to take the time to give him a chance.” That is the central tension in this story: the behaviors were real, yet the shelter record was not a complete prediction of his life in a home.

What changed in foster care
The first walks were physically difficult
Mike Foster agreed to try fostering Comet after the initial placement failed. On their walks, Comet pulled and moved from side to side so forcefully that Foster was tripped. The response described in the article was not a single trick or a special product. Foster kept walking, paid attention to Comet’s responses and used cues as the dog began to understand what was expected.
By the second day, after several miles of walking, the feature says Comet was beginning to respond to cues and ease the tension on the leash. That sequence matters for anyone reading the story as encouragement: the work was repeated and hands-on, and the improvement was reported for this dog under this caregiver’s supervision. It should not be presented as a promised two-day leash-training schedule.

Comet had been described as howling when he saw other dogs. Foster did not respond by escalating the encounter. He stayed calm and redirected Comet’s attention with a cue. Best Friends reports that Comet could approach another dog calmly within a week.
The word “within” does not make a universal deadline. A different dog could need more distance, more time or professional help, and the feature does not identify the cue, equipment or setting used. The useful lesson is the structure of the interaction: notice the trigger, keep the person’s response controlled and give the dog an alternative focus instead of allowing every sighting to become a rehearsal of howling.

Managing food instead of arguing at the plate
Counter-surfing was another part of Comet’s shelter description. Foster changed the household routine by stopping the practice of leaving food out, feeding Comet in his bowl and eating separately from him. Foster recalled, “He was so brazen that he would try to take the food off my plate while I was eating.” The feature says Comet gradually stopped trying to take food and stopped begging.
This is a management example, not a claim that every food-stealing dog will change on the same schedule. It shows why an adopter should examine the home environment as well as the dog: accessible food, meal routines and consistent boundaries can affect how often an unwanted behavior is rewarded.
Energy was part of the dog, not a side note
The story portrays Comet as highly energetic. At a dog park, he ran for two hours before tiring and then fell asleep on Foster’s lap. That scene is an anecdote, not a recommended exercise prescription. It does, however, make the adoption decision concrete. A person considering a dog with this level of drive needs to ask how much time, supervision and activity can be provided on ordinary days, not only on an occasional weekend.
From foster bond to permanent adoption
Comet bonded with Foster, but Foster’s family could not adopt him. The successful foster relationship therefore had two jobs: help Comet learn household routines and provide information for the next match.
David Goodin, a first-time dog parent, found Comet through the Best Friends website. Foster shared his experience with Goodin, and the two held a virtual meet-and-greet. Those online meetings and shelter procedures took place during the early COVID-19 stay-at-home period in 2020; they should not be treated as a current, universal adoption process.

The feature describes Goodin as having an active outdoor lifestyle and enough time for the dog. His routine included multiple walks totaling about two miles and games of fetch. Comet became anxious when left alone, so Goodin initially kept absences short rather than expecting the dog to tolerate a full schedule immediately. Comet also went camping with him.
Goodin summarized the responsibility this way: “Be prepared for a lot of work potentially as it can be stressful, yet highly rewarding.” His experience illustrates a matching decision, not a guarantee that an active owner, a first-time owner or a camping trip will solve separation-related anxiety for another dog.
How to use Comet’s story when evaluating an adoption
Read behavior notes as questions to investigate
“Counter-surfing” does not tell you how often the dog did it, what food was available or what happened when food was removed. “No leash training” does not reveal whether the dog had been walked regularly. “Howling at dogs” does not specify distance, context or whether the behavior occurred in a kennel, yard or public space. Ask the shelter or foster caregiver for those details, then ask what management already works.
Also ask about the unsuccessful placement. Comet’s first foster home ended within a day because of a potty-training problem. That fact is important precisely because it did not end the search for a better setting. Before adopting, decide where the dog will toilet, how accidents will be handled and who can help if the first week is harder than expected.

- How many walks, play sessions and training periods can you provide consistently?
- Who is present during the day, and how long would the dog be alone?
- Can everyone in the household follow the same food and door routines?
- What happens if pulling makes a walk unsafe for one member of the household?
- Which shelter, foster or veterinary contacts can answer questions after adoption?
Goodin’s multiple walks, fetch and short initial absences are examples of a routine that fit Comet as described. They are not a required template. The correct comparison is between the specific dog’s observed needs and the adopter’s available time and skills.
Plan a gradual first week
Comet’s transition included predictable changes rather than an assumption that adoption completed the work. A practical plan should identify where meals happen, how food is kept out of reach, when walks occur and how alone-time will begin. Keep early absences short if the dog shows anxiety, and record what happens so that the plan can be adjusted with the shelter, rescue or a qualified behavior professional.
For leash or dog-to-dog concerns, arrange controlled situations rather than testing the dog in the busiest available place. The story’s reported approach—calmly redirecting attention when another dog appeared—gives an example of a response pattern, but it does not replace an individualized assessment.
Value foster information
A foster caregiver can observe behaviors that are difficult to see in a kennel: how the dog eats, sleeps, settles, reacts to household movement and handles a door closing. Foster’s notes gave Goodin information about Comet’s walks, food behavior, energy and bond. Ask whether a foster trial is available, what observations will be recorded and who will receive them if the dog moves again.

- Request the full history. Ask for shelter notes, the length of stay, previous placement details and known triggers. Separate observed facts from guesses about causes.
- Clarify the behavior in context. Find out what happens before, during and after pulling, vocalizing, food seeking, accidents or difficulty settling.
- Describe your household honestly. Include work hours, stairs, children, other animals, outdoor access, transportation and the longest likely absence.
- Match activity and supervision. Decide who will provide walks and play on workdays, bad-weather days and illness days.
- Set up management before arrival. Prepare meal locations, food storage, a quiet resting area, walking equipment and a plan for safe introductions.
- Agree on the first-week routine. Write down feeding, toileting, walks, rest and alone-time plans so every person follows the same pattern.
- Identify backup help. Know which shelter or rescue contact, veterinarian and behavior professional you will call if safety or anxiety becomes a concern.
- Define a reassessment point. Decide how you will review progress with the support team instead of making an impulsive decision after one difficult day.
What Comet’s timeline can—and cannot—tell you
| Milestone in the feature | Appropriate interpretation |
|---|---|
| First foster placement ended within a day | A placement problem can reflect a mismatch or an unprepared transition; gather details before drawing conclusions about the dog. |
| Leash tension began easing by day two | Repeated practice and a consistent handler helped Comet; another dog may progress differently. |
| Calmer approach to another dog within a week | This is an anecdotal outcome for Comet, not a deadline or safety guarantee. |
| Two hours of running before sleep at the dog park | It conveys high energy in one setting; it is not a universal exercise recommendation. |
| Short absences at the start of adoption | Goodin adjusted the routine for Comet’s anxiety; alone-time plans should be tailored to the individual dog. |
The limits of a feel-good adoption story
The source is a single feature published June 2, 2020, not a training trial, breed guide or population study. It supplies no success rate, no standardized behavior assessment and no comparison with other training methods. It also does not establish that coonhound mixes generally behave like Comet, that every shelter stay produces the same challenges or that a particular leash, harness, treat or training aid caused the progress. The article names no product or model.

That limitation does not make the account useless. It makes the correct takeaway narrower and more honest: a dog with intimidating notes may show substantial change when a caregiver provides time, consistent routines and a setting that fits. The adopter still has to evaluate safety, resources and support for the individual dog.
Why this story still matters
Comet was not presented as a magically transformed dog. He remained an energetic animal whose daily life required walks, play, food management and attention to anxiety when alone. What changed was the opportunity to observe him outside the shelter, teach predictable routines and place him with someone prepared to continue the work.
Before adopting any dog with a similar profile, research ahead, ask precise questions and decide whether the energy level fits your lifestyle. Expect stress as well as rewarding moments. Comet’s move from a six-month shelter stay to foster care and then to Goodin’s home is encouraging because several people treated the behavior notes as information to work with—not as a final verdict—while still making a realistic match.
