A trained dog searches for the scent of a target species, indicates the location, and earns a play reward; the handler then collects the sample, records field conditions and GPS coordinates, and sends it for laboratory analysis. In a 2023 account of K9 Conservationists, this workflow produced about 60 carnivore scat samples in less than two weeks in Guatemala.
The dog is not the whole research method. Its alert starts a chain of collection, location recording and laboratory work that can reveal diet, relatedness, parasite load and other ecological information without capturing an animal for a blood draw.

What “dogs collecting data” means in conservation
Wild animals leave scat across large, difficult landscapes, but the material can be hard for a human searcher to spot or identify. Detection dogs use scent to locate samples from a specified target species while ignoring other animals’ scat. That selectivity lets a field team gather biological material without first trapping the animal that produced it.

Once a laboratory receives a sample, scientists can ask questions that field observation alone cannot answer. Fratt says analyses may include:
- Diet: identifying what a predator has eaten.
- Relatedness: examining genetic relationships among animals.
- Parasite load: checking for parasites present in the material.
- Other ecological questions: using the sample’s biological information alongside its location and field notes.
The result is best understood as “sniffing scat for science”: the dog improves the chance of finding a useful sample, while people and laboratories turn that find into a dataset.
The field workflow, step by step
K9 Conservationists’ process links canine behavior, sample handling and geospatial records. Each stage matters because a correctly identified sample with no location or context is far less useful to a researcher.

-
Set the target scent and survey area
Researchers define which species’ scat they need and where the search will happen. The dogs are trained to indicate that target scent and to ignore scat from non-target animals. The search can cover rough terrain and vegetation in which a person might walk past the evidence.
-
Let the dog search independently
The handler guides the dog through the assigned area while allowing it to work its nose. The dog’s physical ability matters because field searches can require many miles, heat tolerance and movement through dense underbrush. The handler watches the dog’s behavior without steering it toward a hoped-for result.
-
Recognize the indication
When the dog detects the trained scent, it gives its learned indication. The indication tells the handler where to look; it does not by itself establish the species, freshness or scientific value of the material. The handler must inspect and collect the find.

Reward the find with play
Fratt describes fetch as the reward for each find. Positive reinforcement makes the search meaningful to the dog and supports reliable motivation over repeated searches. The reward is part of the working system, not a decorative extra.

Collect the sample and record context
The handler gathers the scat using the project’s contamination-control and storage procedures, then notes local conditions. Those notes can include details such as habitat or weather that help researchers interpret the laboratory result. The account does not prescribe one universal collection kit or protocol.
-
Mark the GPS position
Handlers record where the sample was found on a handheld GPS. A location connects the biological result to a map, survey effort and environmental conditions. Fratt does not name a GPS make, model or required accuracy, so the defensible takeaway is the need for a dependable location record rather than a particular device.
-
Send samples for laboratory analysis
Laboratory specialists analyze the material for the project’s question, such as diet, genetic relatedness or parasites. The final dataset therefore combines the dog’s detection, the handler’s notes and coordinates, and the laboratory’s result.
What happened in Guatemala
In the Maya Biosphere Preserve, the dogs Barley and Niffler searched for carnivore scat for researchers associated with the Wildlife Conservation Society and Oregon State University. The samples were intended to help examine what predators eat and how species interact in the ecosystem.

Why use scat instead of trapping an animal?
Fratt presents scat collection as less stressful for wildlife than capturing an animal for a blood draw. A dog can locate material that the animal has already left, allowing researchers to obtain biological information without handling that individual.
That is a comparison of invasiveness and immediate handling stress, not a quantified head-to-head evaluation. The feature does not provide controlled measurements of stress, detection accuracy, cost or total sampling success against trapping, camera traps or human searchers. The practical advantage described is that dogs can help locate samples while the wildlife remains free-ranging.
What makes a dog suitable for conservation detection work?
Scenting ability is necessary but not sufficient. Fratt says the team looks for a dog that can physically cover many miles, wants to work and is strongly motivated by a reward such as fetch. She quotes the central selection principle: “There’s really no way to force a dog to do this sort of work, so it’s all about finding a dog with that spark.”
| Selection consideration | Why it matters in the field |
|---|---|
| Physical capacity | Searches may involve long distances, heat, uneven ground and dense vegetation. |
| Work motivation | The dog must continue searching voluntarily over repeated sessions. |
| Reward responsiveness | A clear reinforcer, such as fetch, supports positive training and a consistent indication. |
| Ability to discriminate scents | The dog must locate the target species’ scat while ignoring non-target scat. |
At the time of the 2023 feature, K9 Conservationists favored border collies. Fratt also notes that other organizations work with spaniels, heelers, shepherds, Labradors and mixed-breed dogs. That range is important: the organization’s preference is not a universal breed recommendation. An individual dog’s health, temperament, stamina and reward interest are more informative than breed label alone.
Training is ongoing, not a one-time qualification
The account describes continuing positive-reinforcement training. Dogs practice the target-scent search, the indication and the reward sequence so that the behavior remains clear in changing environments. Training also has to prepare the team for distractions, unfamiliar terrain and the practical handling of samples.

Working ability depends on welfare. Fratt says these high-energy dogs need daily physical and mental activity, fitness attention, parasite prevention and veterinary support. A dog that is bored, sore, overheated or ill cannot safely perform a demanding search.

Health incidents from the team’s experience
Fratt recounts Barley’s probable brown recluse bite and a later tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) injury. She also describes another dog’s emergency involving a foxtail. These episodes show why field plans need veterinary access, injury prevention and recovery time; they are examples from this team’s experience, not typical injury or illness rates.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The human side of the job
Handlers work through conditions that are easy to underestimate when the dog’s successful alert is the only visible moment. Fratt lists heat, insects, sunburn, ticks, predawn travel and dense underbrush. A handler may also be entering data, preserving sample information, navigating with GPS and caring for the dog before and after the search.
The work can be physically and financially difficult. Fratt notes that funding and pay can be challenging, so enthusiasm for conservation does not guarantee a stable job or a well-funded project. Teams need budgets for transport, equipment, veterinary care, training time and laboratory analysis as well as the handler’s labor.
How to interpret the data responsibly
A detection dog contributes a powerful search capability, but the alert has limits. It does not identify every animal in an area, estimate population size by itself or replace laboratory confirmation. A sample can be valuable only when its identity, location, collection circumstances and chain of handling are documented well enough for the research question.
The Guatemala result illustrates the distinction. About 60 finds in less than two weeks demonstrates that the two dogs located substantial material during that project. It does not establish a universal samples-per-day figure, a probability of detection, or superiority over another survey method.

Likewise, naming jaguars, pumas, ocelots, margays, tayras and jaguarundis reports what DNA analysis identified in those samples. It does not turn the list into a population census or prove how frequently each species occurred in the preserve.
What equipment is actually part of the workflow?
The account clearly places a handheld GPS in the handler’s kit because every find needs a recorded position. A field notebook or digital data-entry system is also consistent with the requirement to record local conditions, but Fratt does not endorse a particular model. Fetch toys and an orange vest appear in the account as working items, not evaluated products.
For a real project, equipment choices should follow the research protocol: sample containers and labels that prevent mix-ups, safe field clothing, tick and heat precautions, navigation and communication equipment, and a reward the individual dog values. The source does not establish a single universal checklist or technical specification.
Ways to learn more about the work
K9 Conservationists’ “In The News” page lists a virtual coaching club delivered through Patreon and an 18-week online handler course. Because schedules, enrollment and terms can change, check the organization’s current information directly before relying on either option. These educational offerings are paths to learn about conservation-dog handling; completing one does not by itself establish field employment or qualify someone to collect samples for a particular research project.
The practical takeaway
Dogs collecting data is a coordinated field method: a motivated dog finds a target scent, play rewards the indication, a handler gathers the scat and records its context and GPS position, and a laboratory answers the ecological question. The approach can reduce the need to capture wildlife for biological sampling and can make otherwise hidden scat findable in difficult habitat. Its success still depends on careful training, animal welfare, sound sample handling, accurate location records and realistic support for both dogs and people.
