She grew up with dogs, considered herself a dog person, and initially pictured a different kind of pet. The decision changed after she moved into her own place, spent more time alone while her fiancé traveled for work, and realized that a dog would not fit comfortably into their small yard and shared complex.
Her answer came through an adoption post on Facebook. Among several saved listings, Ivy’s stood out. Uys contacted the person handling the adoption, completed the requested checks, prepared for the journey home, and met the long-haired cat she now calls her soul cat. Her account, published in Catster’s Wednesday Cats series and displayed as updated September 15, 2026, is less a story about a magical test than about recognition followed by patience, preparation, and trust.

Before Ivy, Crystal Uys thought she was a dog person
Uys describes her earlier identity plainly: she grew up with dogs and assumed dogs were the animals she understood best. That assumption lasted until her circumstances changed. She and her fiancé were living in a complex with a very small yard, and neighbors had already complained about dogs. A dog might have been familiar to her, but familiarity did not make one the right fit for that home.
Her fiancé’s work travel added another part to the decision. When he was away, the home felt quiet, and Uys wanted companionship. She was not choosing a cat because she had always wanted one or because she had a fixed plan for a particular breed. She was trying to match an animal to the space, the household’s routine, and the kind of company she needed.

That distinction matters in her story. The question was not simply whether she liked cats. It was whether a cat could thrive in the life she could realistically provide. Even after she reached that conclusion, Uys says it took weeks to persuade her fiancé to agree to adoption.
A practical decision became an emotional one
The small yard and existing complaints made a dog feel impractical, but practicality was only the starting point. Uys wanted an individual companion, not just a pet that met the physical limits of the property. Her eventual connection with Ivy shows how an apparently logistical choice can become a deeply personal relationship.
How Ivy’s Facebook post caught her attention
Once Uys began considering adoption, she saved multiple posts and found it difficult to choose. That uncertainty is part of the account: she did not immediately know which cat was “the one.” The turning point came when she saw Ivy’s adoption post on Facebook.

Ivy’s long hair and distinctive coat had already attracted interest from other people. Uys does not present those features as proof that Ivy was objectively better than the other cats she considered. They were simply the details that made her stop scrolling and feel an immediate connection. The post gave that feeling somewhere practical to go: she could contact the person arranging the adoption and ask about bringing Ivy home.
The adoption contact asked for more than enthusiasm
Uys says the person handling Ivy’s adoption requested a video of the apartment and a document showing that the complex approved pets. She also needed to be ready to pay an adoption fee of around $150. In her account, that fee included Ivy’s first vaccinations and spaying procedure.
Those requirements belong to this individual adoption and should not be treated as a universal checklist or a typical fee. Shelters, foster networks, and private rescuers can set different rules, ask for different documents, or include different veterinary services. What Uys’s experience does show is that feeling an instant connection did not replace demonstrating that Ivy had an appropriate home.

Two days of preparation before pickup
Uys says the process moved quickly after the contact was made. Two days later, after preparing for Ivy’s arrival, she picked her up following the cat’s procedure. The compressed schedule made preparation important: there was little time to turn an empty home into a place where a newly adopted cat could travel safely and settle in.

Her related account of the preparation reveals one easy-to-miss detail. She had considered food, bowls, beds, scratchers, litter boxes, and other supplies, but she forgot the carrier. The foster specifically requested a sturdy carrier that locked securely for the two-hour trip. Uys found a second-hand carrier, cleaned it, left it to dry in the sun, and checked with the foster before using it.
Why the carrier became part of the story
The carrier was not a decorative purchase or a brand preference. It was the piece of equipment that had to keep Ivy contained and protected for the journey home. Uys’s account identifies three practical considerations: secure closure, sturdy construction, and suitability for the length of the trip. She does not compare models or claim that her second-hand carrier was superior to any other option.
That small oversight also makes the preparation story relatable. A prospective adopter can think carefully about food and litter and still forget the one item required to transport the animal. Checking the travel plan before pickup can expose that kind of gap.
The other items Uys gathered
In the preparation story, Uys mentions basic metal food and water bowls, a cat bed, a litter box, biodegradable non-clumping litter, toys, a collar and nametag, and a cat tree. Later additions to Ivy’s environment included a water fountain, two cat trees, ping-pong balls, scratchers, a de-shedding brush, and wall shelves.

The nerves of meeting a new cat
Uys remembers being nervous about the relationship she was about to begin. Would Ivy like her? Would the cat approach only when food was available? Those questions capture a common uncertainty in an adoption story without claiming that every cat behaves the same way.
Her account says Ivy was friendly and affectionate. It also makes clear that the bond was not built by demanding instant closeness. Uys used patience, reassurance, and treats while Ivy adjusted and while both of them learned one another’s routines. The emotional payoff came through repeated, low-pressure interactions rather than a single dramatic moment at pickup.
Patience gave the connection room to develop
Uys’s description is important because “soul cat” can sound as if the relationship was predetermined and effortless. In her telling, the immediate spark was followed by work. She paid attention to Ivy, offered reassurance, and allowed trust to grow. Treats helped create positive interactions, but they were part of a broader pattern of consistency.

The post prompted contact; the daily relationship turned that first impression into something lasting.
Ivy won over the initially reluctant fiancé
Uys’s fiancé had resisted getting a cat, yet he became attached after Ivy arrived. She says Ivy began accompanying him as he prepared for work. Those small routines gave him a direct relationship with the cat, separate from the original debate about whether to adopt.
This shift changes the household dynamic in the story. Adoption was first negotiated between two people, with one partner trying to persuade the other. After Ivy came home, affection developed through ordinary moments: getting ready for work, sharing space, and becoming part of the household’s rhythm. The person who had been hesitant was no longer evaluating the idea of a cat in the abstract; he was responding to Ivy as an individual.

What makes Ivy a “soul cat” for Uys
Uys summarizes the depth of the relationship in one sentence: “The bond I have with my cat is unlike any other bond I’ve had with previous animals we’ve owned.” The comparison is personal. She is not claiming that cats create a special kind of bond for everyone or ranking cats against dogs generally. She is explaining why Ivy feels different from the animals who came before.

Several parts of her account lead to that conclusion:
- She chose a cat despite having grown up with dogs and identifying as a dog person.
- She selected Ivy after seeing a Facebook post among many possibilities, rather than following a long-standing plan for a particular cat.
- She prepared for Ivy’s arrival under time pressure, including correcting the forgotten-carrier problem before the two-hour trip.
- She managed her own uncertainty with patience, reassurance, and treats instead of expecting immediate certainty from the cat.
- She watched Ivy become part of the relationship with her fiancé as well as her own daily life.
In that sequence, “soul cat” describes a relationship that changed Uys’s assumptions and became woven into the household. The phrase is emotional, but the events behind it are concrete.
What prospective adopters can take from this account
Start with the home you can actually offer
Uys began by considering the constraints of her living situation: a small yard, a shared complex, and concerns already raised about dogs. Her example supports a grounded question for any adopter: which animal can fit the space, schedule, rules, and attention available? A familiar type of pet is not automatically the best match.
Let the individual animal change your mind
Uys’s identity as a dog person did not prevent her from recognizing a connection with Ivy. The Facebook post gave her information about one cat, not a theory about all cats. Paying attention to the individual animal allowed her to move beyond the label she had assigned herself.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsConfirm the requirements before pickup
Her adoption contact wanted an apartment video and pet approval document, and the foster wanted a secure carrier for the journey. An adopter following a similar path should ask what paperwork, transport equipment, veterinary arrangements, and timing are required before setting a pickup date. Uys’s forgotten carrier shows why this check is worth doing early.

Do not measure the relationship by the first hour
Uys worried that Ivy might only approach at feeding time, yet she describes a close bond built through patience and reassurance. A new cat’s first reactions cannot, by themselves, establish the future of the relationship. In Uys’s case, trust became visible through repeated interactions and shared routines.
What this story does not establish
Uys reports an adoption fee of approximately $150, including first vaccinations and spaying for Ivy. That is a detail of her adoption, not a current national average, a standard shelter price, or a promise about what another rescue will include. The same caution applies to the requested apartment video, pet approval document, and carrier arrangement: they were part of this process, not universal rules.
The account also offers no product test, veterinary recommendation, behavior study, or comparison of carriers, litter, food, or cat furniture. Its value is observational and personal. It shows how one adopter moved from uncertainty to commitment and how a relationship developed after the cat came home.
Crystal and Ivy’s story in one view
Uys grew up with dogs and expected to think like a dog person. A quiet home, a small yard, and her fiancé’s travel led her to consider a cat. After weeks of hesitation and several saved adoption posts, Ivy’s Facebook listing prompted an immediate connection. Uys completed the requested home checks, prepared for the adoption fee and veterinary procedures described in her account, and solved the practical problem of finding a secure carrier for a two-hour trip.
Once Ivy arrived, the important work was relational. Uys used patience, reassurance, and treats while Ivy settled in. Her fiancé, initially opposed to adopting a cat, became attached as Ivy joined his workday routine. That combination of a good household fit, a memorable first choice, careful preparation, and time spent building trust is why Uys says Ivy is her soul cat.
