Deyra Galvan was an event volunteer in Houston when Best Friends Animal Society profiled her on March 13, 2019. Her work was practical and people-facing: she organized store adoption pop-ups, secured booths at festivals, lined up adoptable dogs and cats, helped run events, completed administrative tasks afterward, and answered questions from new adopters. The profile presents that combination of planning, animal handling, hospitality and follow-through as the way one volunteer helped move shelter pets toward homes.
Galvan’s story is a 2019 account, not a current volunteer listing. Nothing in the available sources confirms whether she still volunteers or what openings, schedules or eligibility rules Houston organizations have today. The recent context is still useful: Best Friends’ 2025 annual report describes adoption, fostering, community-cat work, spay/neuter and transport in Houston, while the City of Houston’s 2025 BARC handbook describes training, fostering and pet-placement activities. Those are current program descriptions, not evidence about Galvan’s present role.

What Galvan actually did at adoption events
The phrase “event volunteer” can sound vague until the work is broken into its individual jobs. In Nicole Hamilton’s 2019 profile for Best Friends, Galvan’s role stretched from finding a workable venue to helping people after an adoption was complete.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsShe organized the places where adoptions happened
Galvan arranged adoption pop-ups in stores and obtained booths at large festivals. Those tasks required her to think beyond the shelter building: identify a public setting, coordinate with event organizers and make sure an adoption presence could operate there. The profile does not provide a schedule, attendance total or formal job description, so it would be wrong to turn her experience into a promise about what every volunteer shift includes.

She matched adoptable pets to the event
Jessica Roper, identified in the 2019 article as Best Friends’ foster manager in Houston, described Galvan’s work this way: “Deyra does everything from organizing adoption pop-up events at stores, to getting us booths at huge festivals to lining up adoptable pets for the events.” Lining up pets is a meaningful logistical step. The animals have to be selected and brought to the right place, with the event arranged so visitors can meet them safely and learn about their needs.
She helped set up and lead the day
Her contribution did not end when a booth was reserved. The profile says she helped set up and lead events. That can mean turning an empty space into an identifiable adoption area, keeping the schedule moving and making sure visitors know how to begin a conversation about a particular dog or cat. The source praises her broad involvement but does not quantify how many events she led or how many animals she personally placed.
She handled the work after the crowd left
Galvan also took on administrative work and answered new adopters’ questions. Follow-up matters because an adoption event creates decisions that continue after the public event: people may need clarification about an animal, the next step in a process or how to settle a newly adopted pet at home. The 2019 profile does not list the questions she received or describe a standardized follow-up system, so her role should be understood as support for adopters rather than as a published set of current procedures.
Why she started volunteering
In her interview, Galvan connected her interest to seeing Best Friends’ work in Los Angeles and to the organization’s response to animals displaced during Hurricane Harvey. The profile says Harvey displaced “thousands of” animals in Houston, without supplying a precise number. That distinction matters: the event was large enough to shape her decision, but the article does not support a more exact count.

- Hard sided pet carrier with 2 doors for front and top entry; suitable for cat or medium size dog weighing 12 - 20 pounds
- Durable plastic construction with steel wire doors; screws keep the top and bottom sections securely connected
- Spring load latches ensure easy one-handed door opening and closing; top door swings open to the left or right and includes a top carry handle
- Plenty of air ventilation on the sides, top, and back of the carrier
- Note: Be sure to measure the size of the pet when choosing carrier size
Her explanation combines two motivations. First, she had seen an organized animal-welfare operation in Los Angeles. Second, the emergency in her own region made the need immediate. She was not described as a veterinarian, paid employee or spokesperson; the article identifies her as a volunteer who chose to contribute time and coordination.
What kept her coming back
Galvan’s comments in the profile focus on urgency and the cumulative value of small contributions. She told people considering volunteer work, “Don’t wait until tomorrow. Come out today!” She also said, “No matter how much (or how little) time you have to give, every minute you spend volunteering makes a big difference.” These are her statements about motivation, not a measured impact estimate.
The staff members quoted in the article describe the attitude they saw in her. Amy Kohlbecker, identified then as Best Friends’ shelter operations manager for Houston, said: “She always has a positive, can-do attitude and always wants to help.” Roper’s description emphasizes range, from event organization to lining up animals. Together, the comments portray persistence as a practical skill: a volunteer who is willing to take a large planning task, a small setup job or a question from a new adopter can keep an event functioning.
Why event work can matter to shelter pets
An adoption event brings three groups into the same place: shelter or foster animals, people considering adoption and the volunteers who make introductions possible. The 2019 profile frames the work as a way to bring those groups together. A public pop-up or festival booth can give an animal an opportunity to be seen by people who may not have visited a shelter that day, while a knowledgeable volunteer can provide context that a sign alone cannot.

The value is not limited to the final handoff. Event preparation creates a setting in which visitors can ask questions; animal selection helps the available pets fit the venue; and post-event administration gives prospective or new adopters a way to continue the conversation. The sources do not provide a Houston-wide adoption rate, a volunteer-impact calculation or a number of adoptions attributable to Galvan, so her contribution should be described through these concrete functions rather than an invented statistic.
A useful way to understand one event shift
Galvan’s reported duties can be organized as a sequence. This is a reconstruction of the work described in the 2019 profile, not an official checklist for every Houston organization.
- Choose and coordinate the setting. Arrange a store pop-up or a festival booth and confirm that the event can host an adoption activity.
- Prepare the animal lineup. Work with the relevant shelter or foster team to identify adoptable pets for that particular event.
- Build the public-facing area. Help set up the booth or pop-up so visitors can find the animals and understand how to ask about them.
- Welcome and guide visitors. Help lead the event, introduce people to pets and direct detailed questions to the appropriate staff or foster contacts.
- Support the decision process. Provide accurate answers within the information available and help prospective adopters understand what happens next.
- Complete follow-up work. Handle administrative tasks and respond to questions from new adopters after the event.
This sequence explains why the profile treats event volunteering as more than standing beside an animal. Logistics, communication and follow-through are all part of the job as it was reported.

Houston’s recent animal-welfare context
Recent sources show that the kind of work Galvan supported remains part of a broader Houston lifesaving system, while also making clear that organizations and programs should not be conflated.

Best Friends’ 2025 program picture
Best Friends’ 2025 annual report describes a program mix that includes adoption, fostering, community-cat work, spay/neuter and transport, including activity in Houston. It reports that 969 pets were adopted during the Petco Love Mega Adoption Event weekend at NRG Arena. Best Friends says the event was co-sponsored by Best Friends and Petco Love and brought shelters from across Texas together. The figure belongs to that specific weekend and report; it is not a general Houston adoption rate and is not credited to Galvan’s 2019 work.
The same report tells the story of a dog named Vida, who was not among the weekend adoptions because she needed specialized care. After hospitalization, she was adopted from the Best Friends Pet Lifesaving Center in Houston two weeks later. Her case illustrates why adoption work can involve more than a single event: an animal’s path may include medical treatment and a later placement opportunity.
BARC’s city-shelter context
The City of Houston’s BARC Volunteer Handbook 2025 describes volunteer training, fostering and pet placement at the city’s BARC Animal Shelter and Adoption Facility. BARC and Best Friends are distinct organizations. The handbook therefore provides local context about a city shelter program, not confirmation of Galvan’s affiliation, current status or the requirements for a Best Friends event.
What this profile does—and does not—establish today
The named source is a feature and interview published in 2019. It establishes what Galvan reported doing at that time and how Roper and Kohlbecker described her. It does not establish that she currently volunteers, that the same event format is still used, or that any particular Houston opportunity is open.
It also does not support several tempting but inaccurate conclusions. Galvan is not identified as a paid member of staff. No source assigns her a number of adoptions, a volunteer-hours total or a citywide impact percentage. The 969-pet figure from the 2025 annual report belongs to one later NRG Arena weekend, not to her personal record. Keeping those boundaries intact makes the story more useful, not less: readers can see exactly what one volunteer did without turning a personal profile into an unsupported performance claim.

If you are thinking about volunteering in Houston
Galvan’s example offers a practical way to evaluate your own fit, even though it cannot supply current openings or eligibility rules.
Decide which part of the work suits you
- Planning: You may be most useful arranging a venue, coordinating a booth or preparing an event timetable.
- Animal-facing support: You may prefer helping present adoptable dogs and cats and sharing the information supplied by the shelter or foster team.
- Public communication: You may enjoy welcoming visitors, explaining the next step and helping people find reliable answers.
- Administration: You may be better suited to records, event logistics and follow-up questions after an adoption.
Ask for current details from the organization
Before committing, consult the organization’s current official volunteer or foster information. Confirm whether training is required, what age or supervision rules apply, which events need help, how animals are handled and who answers adopter questions. The 2025 annual report and BARC handbook establish that these programs exist, but they do not publish a current Houston-wide schedule or a single set of requirements for every opportunity.

Galvan’s own advice recognizes both large and small contributions. A person who can plan a festival booth is valuable, but so is someone who can complete setup, greet visitors for part of a shift or answer follow-up questions. Be specific with the coordinator about the time you can reliably give; the profile’s central lesson is that dependable participation matters across many task sizes.
Keep animal and adopter information accurate
Event volunteers are often the first people a visitor approaches. Use the information supplied by the shelter or foster team, acknowledge when you do not know an answer and direct the person to the appropriate staff member. That approach reflects the profile’s emphasis on helping new adopters without turning a volunteer into a substitute for veterinary, behavioral or adoption staff.
The lasting lesson from Galvan’s example
Galvan’s story is compelling because it makes invisible work visible. An adoption event succeeds through a chain of decisions: someone finds the venue, someone brings the right animals, someone creates a welcoming space, someone keeps the event moving and someone remains available after an adopter goes home. In the 2019 profile, Galvan occupied many of those links.
Her experience also gives prospective volunteers a realistic answer to the question, “What would you tell others who are thinking of volunteering?” Start with the time and task you can genuinely sustain, then learn the organization’s current process before showing up. A public event may be the visible moment, but the preparation and follow-up are what turn a meeting between a pet and a person into a supported adoption opportunity.
