Its skull and other bones most closely resemble those of putative Paleolithic dogs, while marks on its skeleton suggest it was wounded by humans shortly before it died. The evidence points to a close, complex relationship—but does not prove the animal was adopted, genetically confirm it was a dog, or explain why it was wounded.
What was found at Baume Traucade?
The remains come from Baume Traucade, a cave at Issirac in Gard, southern France. Researchers describe the find as a rare, nearly complete Pleistocene canid skeleton. The study estimates that the animal lived approximately 16.0–15.3 calibrated thousand years before present, after the Last Glacial Maximum. The peer-reviewed paper by Mietje Germonpré and colleagues was published in Quaternary Science Reviews on 15 May 2025 as article 109288, volume 356.
The individual was likely female. Researchers estimate a body mass of 26 kg and a shoulder height of 62 cm; these are analytical estimates rather than direct measurements of a living animal.
Was it really a dog?
The authors call the specimen “dog-like” and find that its morphology most closely matches their putative Paleolithic dog comparison group. Craniometric analyses classified it with that group with a 99.5% posterior probability using raw skull measurements and 96.7% using size-adjusted measurements. The study also reports that comparisons of the mandible and long bones were closest to putative Paleolithic dogs.

Those percentages describe how the specimen was classified among the study’s reference groups; they are not the probability that it was domesticated in an absolute sense. The result is morphological, not genetic. The reviewed sources do not report DNA sequencing of this individual, so the evidence supports a dog-like classification without genetically establishing it as a domestic dog. Do the injuries show that humans killed it?
Impact marks on the lumbar vertebrae and ribs, together with circular perforations on one scapula, led the study’s authors to infer that humans wounded the canid shortly before its death. The marks support an inference of human-inflicted trauma, but they do not identify the person responsible or establish exactly how the animal died.

Nor do the injuries reveal a motive. The available evidence does not show whether the canid was killed for food, deliberately sacrificed, injured in a hunt, or wounded in another situation.
Was it adopted or cared for?
“Adopted then killed” is a striking framing, but adoption is not demonstrated by the primary study’s reported findings. Human wounding near death does not show that the animal had previously lived with people or received care. The primary abstract highlights the impact marks and scapular perforations; it does not establish adoption or human medical treatment.

Healed vertebrae have been highlighted in a popular account, but healing alone would not prove that people treated or supported the animal. The evidence reported in the study supports a close encounter between humans and this canid near the end of its life, while leaving its earlier relationship with people unknown.

The skeleton adds an unusually complete specimen to evidence about canids living alongside humans in the Paleolithic. Its age and dog-like morphology make it relevant to discussion of early dogs, while its injuries provide evidence of direct human–canid interaction. It also illustrates why different kinds of evidence need to be kept distinct: skull and skeletal comparisons indicate affinity to a reference group, genetics can test biological relationships, and trauma marks can inform interpretations of injury. None of those findings alone answers every question about domestication or social life.

A 2026 genomic study provides broader context about dogs across western Eurasia during the Paleolithic, but that work does not establish the DNA of the Baume Traucade individual. Findings from other remains should not be treated as genetic results for this skeleton. Nature’s 2026 genomic study addresses the wider evidence.
