If your pet is struggling to breathe, having a seizure, collapsing, unconscious or unresponsive, or bleeding heavily, go to the nearest emergency veterinary hospital now. Call ahead while you are on the way if you can do so safely. For a possible poisoning, contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly—even if your pet seems fine.
Should I take my pet to the emergency vet?
Yes, if your pet has a life-threatening sign. The ASPCA’s article on when to take a pet to the veterinary hospital says to go immediately for seizures, trouble breathing, failure to respond or unconsciousness, or bleeding. Its broader emergency guidance also identifies pale gums, rapid breathing, difficulty standing, apparent paralysis, severe trauma, choking and heatstroke as reasons for urgent care.

- Go immediately: breathing difficulty, seizure, collapse, unconsciousness or unresponsiveness, or significant bleeding.
- Call an emergency veterinarian promptly: if your pet cannot stand or walk, seems suddenly confused or weak, has a severe allergic reaction, may have an obstruction, or has a rapidly swollen abdomen with retching.
- If you are unsure: call an emergency veterinary hospital and describe what you see. A veterinarian can help determine the next step; an online article cannot diagnose your pet.
For dogs, Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine describes respiratory distress signs that include rapid, often open-mouth breathing; bluish gums or muzzle; effort from the abdomen; an extended head and neck; noisy breathing; and weakness or collapse. Cornell advises taking a dog with these signs quickly and calmly to the nearest emergency animal hospital and calling ahead when possible. Keep the car cool during transport. These signs are from dog-specific guidance and are not a complete checklist for cats.

My pet ate something—what should I do?
Contact a veterinarian, emergency veterinary hospital or animal poison-control service immediately after a possible hazardous ingestion, even if your pet has no symptoms. The ASPCA warns that some effects can be delayed and may be harder to treat once signs begin. Do not wait for your pet to look ill before seeking professional advice.

When might monitoring at home be reasonable?
Only in limited circumstances. UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine says a single vomiting episode in an otherwise healthy adult pet that remains interactive and continues eating and drinking is probably okay to monitor. That example does not establish a general rule for every pet or symptom.
- Contact a veterinarian if your pet stops eating, becomes more lethargic or is not behaving normally.
- UC Davis treats blood or foreign material in vomit or stool as an immediate emergency.
- A possible foreign-body ingestion depends on what was eaten. Seek veterinary advice if you are uncertain.
Repeated or worsening symptoms, young age, existing illness, possible toxin or foreign-body exposure, or a strong concern about your pet can change the decision. If a severe sign appears, go to an emergency hospital; if the situation is unclear, call a veterinarian rather than relying on a wait-and-see rule.

How should I transport my pet and prepare?
Call the emergency hospital while en route when possible, and prioritize your own safety around an injured, frightened or painful animal. For a cat, ASPCA emergency guidance describes using an open-topped carrier or box; if spinal injury is possible, support the head and neck while moving the animal. For a dog in respiratory distress, keep the vehicle cool as Cornell advises.
Before an emergency happens, save the name, phone number and address of a nearby emergency clinic somewhere easy to find. ASPCA also recommends discussing an emergency protocol with your primary veterinarian. A carrier or basic first-aid supplies can help with preparation, but neither replaces veterinary care when urgent signs are present.
