How Dogtown Makes Grooming and Baths Less Scary for Sanctuary Dogs

Best Friends Animal Society’s 2017 Dogtown feature shows why dog grooming works best when caregivers adapt the tools, pace and schedule to each animal.

At Best Friends Animal Society’s Dogtown sanctuary, grooming is presented as individualized care rather than a fixed bathing schedule. A 2017 feature by Christelle L. Del Prete describes two grooming rooms, visits for nearly every new arrival, and regular appointments for dogs who have settled into sanctuary life. The staff change the process to fit each dog: a frightened bather may get a bucket instead of a sprayer and a low dryer setting, while a familiar dog may progress from resisting nail trims to calmly sitting through them.

The clearest lesson is simple: make grooming predictable, gentle and responsive to the dog in front of you. Itchy, Nochi and Ralph illustrate three different reasons a dog might need grooming and three different ways sanctuary staff adjusted care.

What “Dogtown” means in this story

Dogtown is Best Friends Animal Society’s sanctuary area, not a commercial salon or daycare that happens to use the same name. The feature, published January 27, 2017, describes two grooming rooms used by sanctuary dogs. Nearly every dog who arrives at the sanctuary visits a grooming room, and dogs who are already settled there continue to receive regular appointments.

Those appointments are not described as identical baths for every dog. Groomer Alyssa Hill and the other caregivers considered temperament, familiarity, coat and skin concerns, and how a dog reacted during the appointment. Hill summarized the approach this way: “Baths can be scary for some dogs, so we try to make it super positive for them, which will help them when they eventually go to their forever homes.”

The account is a historical, organization-reported description of three dogs. It does not provide a population study, a universal bathing interval or a product test. Its value is in showing how small handling choices can change a grooming experience.

Three dogs, three grooming situations

Dog Situation described in the feature Adjustment or care Reported result
Itchy Fearful first-time bather; scratching associated with mange Soft voice, small bucket instead of a sprayer, medicated shampoo left on for a few minutes, gentle rinse, towel drying and a crate with an attached dryer on a low setting He gradually relaxed; weeks later, after the bath and topical treatments, he scratched less and seemed more comfortable
Nochi 11-year-old Schnauzer mix familiar with his caregiver but previously difficult to trim Relationship-building through walking, feeding, training and daily care; routine baths and nail trims He learned to sit for nail trimming, so the procedure became faster
Ralph Irritated skin associated with a skin infection and chronic allergies Frequent grooming support; daily oxygen-infused baths for a period, followed by visits several times a month after improvement Daily baths stopped after his condition improved, while recurring allergy-relief visits continued

These are individual examples, not controlled comparisons. A dog’s response can depend on health, previous handling, trust and the equipment available on that day.

Itchy: changing the bath when fear is obvious

Itchy, an Australian shepherd mix, arrived scratching because of mange. The feature says topical treatments accompanied a soothing medicated bath. In the tub, he hunkered down with his tail tucked, clear signs that the ordinary setup was overwhelming for him.

Hill spoke softly and used a small bucket rather than a sprayer because the bucket appeared more comfortable for him. She worked medicated shampoo into his coat, allowed it to remain for a few minutes, then rinsed gently. After towel drying, she placed him in a crate with an attached air dryer and selected a low setting. The gradual airflow gave him time to settle instead of confronting him with a forceful stream.

The story reports that Itchy gradually relaxed during the process. A few weeks after the bath and topical treatments, he scratched less and felt better. That improvement followed more than one intervention, so the account does not establish that the bath alone caused it. It does show why a groomer may change water delivery, voice, drying method and pace when a dog is frightened.

Nochi: trust built before the appointment matters

Nochi was an 11-year-old Schnauzer mix who knew the grooming routine and trusted Hill. That trust did not begin at the tub. Hill had walked, fed and trained him, and had cared for grooming clients outside the grooming room. Those ordinary interactions gave Nochi a familiar person and a predictable relationship before difficult procedures were attempted.

The feature recalls that Nochi once objected to nail trims so strongly that three people were needed, with two holding him still. Over time, he learned to sit for the trim. Once he cooperated, the nail trim went faster. His routine grooming also included baths.

Nochi’s example separates “being clean” from “being ready.” The successful change was not a stronger restraint technique described by the story; it was a longer process of familiarity and learning. For a dog that already recognizes the caregiver and the sequence, routine can reduce the uncertainty surrounding both bathing and nail care.

Ralph: grooming linked to ongoing skin problems

Ralph had irritated skin associated with a skin infection and chronic allergies. The feature says he received frequent help and, for a time, daily oxygen-infused baths. After he improved, daily baths stopped, but he still visited several times a month for allergy relief.

This schedule belonged to Ralph’s reported sanctuary care and his particular skin problems. It is not current veterinary guidance and should not be copied for another dog. Bath frequency, shampoo choice and any specialized treatment need to follow the animal’s diagnosis and the instructions of a veterinarian or veterinary dermatology team. The important point in the story is that care changed as Ralph’s condition changed.

What the grooming adjustments have in common

Start with the dog’s behavior, not the equipment

Itchy’s tucked tail and crouched posture prompted Hill to change the water-delivery method. The story does not say that a bucket is always better than a sprayer. It shows that equipment should be selected according to the dog’s response. If a sprayer increases distress, a quieter, more controlled way of wetting the coat may be worth trying.

Use a calm voice and a slower sequence

Hill spoke softly to Itchy, let the medicated shampoo sit for a few minutes and rinsed gently. Those details make the bath a series of short, understandable events rather than one sudden rush. The feature does not prescribe a precise timing rule beyond the shampoo’s brief contact period in this case; the lesson is to follow the product or veterinary directions while avoiding unnecessary haste.

Make drying part of the plan

Drying can be as significant as wetting. Itchy was towel-dried and then placed in a crate with an attached air dryer set to low. He gradually relaxed. The low setting and gradual transition were specific responses to his fear, not a guarantee that every dog will tolerate a crate dryer. A caregiver should watch the dog’s posture and stop or alter the process if distress escalates.

Build familiarity outside the grooming room

Nochi’s history shows why trust may be developed during feeding, walking and training rather than only during a bath. A dog who repeatedly encounters the same caregiver in neutral, rewarding situations may find the grooming room less unfamiliar. The feature does not claim that this approach works for every dog, but it documents a meaningful change in Nochi’s cooperation.

Adjust frequency to the condition being managed

Ralph’s daily oxygen-infused baths were temporary and connected to reported skin problems. When he improved, the daily schedule ended, although recurring visits remained useful for allergy relief. A schedule therefore belongs to the dog’s medical and grooming plan, not to a general rule that all dogs should be bathed daily, weekly or monthly.

How to make a bath less scary at home

The following steps translate the handling choices described in the Dogtown feature into a cautious home framework. They are not a substitute for treatment instructions, and they do not mean every dog should receive the same bath.

  1. Observe before you begin. Notice whether your dog approaches the bathing area willingly, freezes, crouches, tucks the tail, pulls away or shows other signs of distress. A fearful response is information to use when choosing the next step.
  2. Prepare a quiet setup. Have towels, the appropriate dog shampoo and a safe drying option ready before wetting the coat. Reducing interruptions lets you keep your voice and movements calm.
  3. Choose the least alarming water method. If a sprayer is frightening, try a small container for controlled pouring, as Hill did with Itchy. This is an adjustment to test, not a universal rule.
  4. Keep your voice gentle and your handling deliberate. Avoid rushing through a frightened dog’s bath. Speak softly, support the dog securely and pause if the dog’s distress is increasing.
  5. Follow shampoo directions exactly. Itchy’s medicated shampoo was worked into the coat and left for a few minutes before a gentle rinse. Do not extend contact time or use a medicated product simply because it helped another dog; skin treatment should be selected with veterinary guidance.
  6. Rinse thoroughly but gently. Remove the shampoo without forcing water over areas that trigger panic. Keep the dog’s face and breathing comfortable.
  7. Introduce drying gradually. Towel dry first. If using an air dryer, begin at a low setting and watch the dog’s reaction. Itchy’s gradual relaxation came with a low dryer setting in a crate, but another dog may need a different arrangement or a professional groomer.
  8. End before the experience becomes a crisis. A short, manageable session can be more useful for future cooperation than pushing through escalating fear. For severe resistance, seek help from a veterinarian, qualified groomer or behavior professional rather than using force.
  9. Repeat predictable elements. Nochi’s progress came over time as he learned the routine and trusted his caregiver. Consistent handling, where safe, can make later appointments more familiar.

Medicated and specialized baths: what this account supports

The feature specifically mentions medicated shampoo for Itchy and daily oxygen-infused baths for Ralph during periods of skin trouble. Those terms describe care reported in the sanctuary story; they are not product recommendations or instructions for treating mange, infection or allergies at home.

No brand, retailer, price or comparative performance information is identified. A dog shampoo listing cannot accurately be presented as a Best Friends recommendation. If a dog is scratching, has inflamed skin, develops sores or has a diagnosed infection or allergy, the appropriate shampoo and bathing interval should come from the treating veterinary professional. A bath may be one part of a broader plan, as Itchy’s topical treatments demonstrate.

What this Dogtown feature does and does not establish

  • It establishes that the sanctuary reported two grooming rooms and individualized appointments for new arrivals and settled dogs.
  • It documents three examples: Itchy’s fear-sensitive bath, Nochi’s trust-based progress and Ralph’s condition-related recurring care.
  • It provides the concrete details of three people once being needed for Nochi’s difficult nail trims and Nochi being 11 years old at the time of the 2017 feature.
  • It does not provide a population-level statistic about bathing, a universal schedule, a controlled test of buckets versus sprayers or a ranking of shampoos.
  • It does not show that Itchy’s bath alone caused his later improvement, and it does not establish daily oxygen-infused baths as appropriate for other dogs.
  • It is a historical account from January 27, 2017. Practices, equipment and medical recommendations may change, so current treatment decisions belong with the dog’s veterinary team.

A practical checklist for a calmer grooming visit

  • Identify the dog’s likely stress signals before water is introduced.
  • Use a familiar caregiver when possible, especially for a dog with a difficult grooming history.
  • Keep a quiet alternative to a noisy sprayer available.
  • Use a calm voice, controlled movements and a gentle rinse.
  • Follow the exact contact time and rinsing instructions for any shampoo.
  • Plan towel drying and introduce air movement at a low setting if the dog tolerates it.
  • Stop and obtain professional help when fear, struggling or skin disease makes home grooming unsafe.
  • Record what helped or worsened the experience so the next appointment can be adjusted.

Dogtown’s behind-the-scenes account is ultimately about preparation and flexibility. Itchy needed a quieter, slower bath; Nochi benefited from a relationship that extended beyond grooming; and Ralph’s schedule changed with his skin condition. Treating those differences as the starting point is more faithful to the story—and safer—than imposing one bathing routine on every dog.
