She made the overland trip across the Nullarbor in a custom-built, climate-controlled crate, accompanied by experienced keepers and veterinarians. Monarto and Western Australian government updates later described her gradual adjustment to her new home and her first fence-free habitat sharing with elephant Tang Mo in February 2026.
How Permai made the journey to South Australia
Permai’s transfer was a road journey from Perth to Monarto Safari Park, crossing the Nullarbor. Zoos South Australia reported that she entered her transport crate during a familiar training routine before it was lifted onto a truck. She was eating watermelon as she departed.

The custom-built crate was insulated and air-conditioned. It had cameras and a temperature gauge that the travelling team could monitor, and could carry up to 1,000 litres of water. Food for the journey was also on board. Zoos SA’s initial estimate was that the trip could take up to two days; this was an estimate, not a reported final travel time. Experienced elephant keepers and veterinarians accompanied her.
Perth Zoo’s transfer update covered planning and crate training, while Monarto Safari Park’s 27 January 2025 report described her departure and transport arrangements.

How Permai adjusted after arriving at Monarto
The Western Australian Zoological Parks Authority’s 2024–25 agency performance report confirms the road transfer and says senior elephant keepers and veterinarians monitored Permai. A Perth Zoo staff member stayed at Monarto to help with her transition. The report describes a gradual acclimatisation, with eating and sleeping patterns improving steadily and Permai showing increasing confidence and curiosity. Her welfare continued to be monitored.
Those details are from the WA government performance report; they describe her reported adjustment rather than providing a clinical assessment or a comparison with other elephant transfers.
