Its current website says PetO does not sell live animals and instead takes an adoption-first approach, including occasional in-store adoption events with rescue partners.
Which pet retailer announced the ban?
The retailer is PetO. PerthNow reported the network-wide announcement, and Inside Retail reported on 9 June 2025 that sales of live animals would cease across all 58 stores. The announcement concerned PetO’s stores in Australia; it was not a ban on selling pet supplies.

PetO says it operated 17 stores in Sydney before acquiring 41 stores on 1 July 2024, bringing its reported national total to 58. Its current store information lists locations across Sydney, the Australian Capital Territory, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia and Tasmania. PetO’s company history and current position and its store and adoption FAQs provide the company’s own account.

What does PetO’s policy mean for customers?
PetO’s current About page states that it does not sell live animals and describes its outlook as “think adoption first.” The retailer says it supports local rescues and charities. Its FAQ says some stores may host in-store adoptions with rescue partners, while separately stating that PetO does not sell cats or dogs. Because the About page uses the broader term “live animals,” the FAQ’s cat-and-dog wording should not be treated as a complete list of species covered by the policy.

Why did PetO say it was ending live-animal sales?
Inside Retail attributed the decision to animal-welfare concerns and a lack of regulation in the industry. A PetO spokesperson said: “The transport, storage and sale of live animals in pet shops is ethically problematic and can lend itself to issues relating to animal welfare as well as irresponsible ownership of pets.” These are the company’s stated reasons, not an independently established finding about every retailer or the sector as a whole.

Reports describe a plan to end live-animal sales across PetO’s 58-store network, and the company’s current About page says it does not sell live animals. However, the accessible sources do not give the exact effective date at each store or a complete species-by-species list for the original rollout. It is therefore more precise to describe the announcement as network-wide intent and the current position as PetO’s stated policy, rather than assign an unverified start date to every location.
