How Feral Hogs Drive Up Farm and Ranch Costs: Four Loss Channels

Feral hogs cost agricultural operations through crop destruction, lost grazing, damaged infrastructure, feed consumption, livestock predation and disease risk. Here is what each pathway includes and how major published estimates differ.

Feral hogs cost farmers and ranchers through four connected channels: they destroy and disrupt crops, reduce pasture and hay production, damage fences and water or irrigation infrastructure, and create livestock losses through predation and disease transmission. The dollar figures published for these impacts are not interchangeable. They cover different states, years, damage categories and estimation methods, so a farm’s actual bill depends on its crops, livestock, hog density and the cost of repairing or preventing damage.

The four ways feral hogs create costs

Cost pathway What hogs do Typical financial effect
Crop loss and harvest disruption Eat, trample, root and wallow in planted fields; damage irrigation and create ruts Lower yield, replanting or crop-switching decisions, extra fuel, equipment wear and delayed or impossible harvest access
Pasture and grazing loss Turn over sod, kill desirable grasses and create weed-prone bare ground Less available forage, lost livestock production, pasture renovation and difficult hay harvest
Fence, water and property damage Break fences, damage hay fields, orchards, equipment and irrigation systems, and consume livestock feed Repair or replacement bills plus continuing operating costs
Livestock loss and disease risk Prey on livestock and transmit diseases that affect animal production and trade Animal losses, disease-management expenses and possible market or trade consequences

USDA APHIS summarizes the scope plainly: “Feral swine cause tremendous damage to agriculture, including row crops, forestry, livestock, and pasture.” That statement appears on its Feral Swine Damage: Agriculture page, last modified January 11, 2026.

1. Crop losses and disrupted harvests

Eating is only one part of the damage

Feral hogs consume standing crops, but their rooting, trampling and wallowing can destroy plants that they never eat. USDA APHIS lists sugar cane, corn, grain sorghum, soybeans, wheat, oats, peanuts, rice and produce among affected crops. A sound field can become a patchwork of missing plants, buried seedlings and exposed roots after repeated visits.

Rooting also changes the soil surface. Hogs leave ruts, upheaved ground and wallows that slow tractors and combines, force operators to make extra passes and increase the chance of hitting hidden debris or uneven ground. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension describes greater fuel use and equipment wear as part of the burden. A producer may therefore pay both for the yield that disappeared and for the machinery time needed to work around the damage.

Harvest timing and crop choice can become economic costs

When access lanes or field edges are badly rooted, equipment may not reach a crop at the normal moisture or maturity window. USDA APHIS notes that ruts and rises can make it difficult or impossible to drive a tractor over a field to harvest hay; the same access problem can affect row-crop operations. A delayed harvest can increase field loss or require a different contractor or machine.

Persistent damage can change planting decisions. Texas A&M reports that some producers plant less-profitable crops to avoid the crops most vulnerable to hog damage. That is an opportunity cost: the farm may harvest something, yet still earn less than it could have earned from its preferred crop. The loss should be recorded separately from direct pounds or bushels destroyed.

What to count on a crop ledger

  • Plants or acreage directly destroyed, trampled or eaten.
  • Replanting seed, labor, chemicals and field preparation.
  • Yield lost because a damaged area cannot be harvested normally.
  • Additional fuel, machine hours, tire or implement wear and hired equipment.
  • Revenue forgone when a more profitable crop is replaced to reduce exposure.

2. Pasture and grazing losses

Rooting reduces forage capacity

Pasture damage starts when hogs turn over sod while searching for roots, grubs and other food. Desirable forage plants can be killed outright, while bare soil and disturbed ground create openings for weeds. The result is less usable forage for the same number of acres. A ranch may have to reduce stocking pressure, move animals sooner or buy supplemental feed while the pasture recovers.

The production loss is separate from the repair bill. Reseeding, grading, fertilizing or controlling weeds can restore a field, but those actions do not recover the grazing days already lost. Track the two effects separately so a repair estimate does not hide the value of lost forage.

Hay fields can become inaccessible

Ruts and raised soil make mowing, raking and baling slower and riskier. USDA APHIS says severe rises and ruts may make it difficult or impossible to drive a tractor over a field to harvest hay. A producer can lose the hay crop, pay someone else to harvest it under harder conditions or incur damage to a tractor or implement. In a grazing system, the same ground disturbance can concentrate livestock on the remaining intact forage and accelerate its decline.

Pasture costs to document

  • Acres with reduced grazing or hay production and the period they are unavailable.
  • Purchased hay or feed needed because forage is missing.
  • Seed, soil preparation, fertilizer, weed control and labor for renovation.
  • Extra fencing or temporary moves needed to keep livestock away from unsafe ground.
  • Machinery, contractor and fuel costs caused by rough or inaccessible fields.

3. Fence, water and other property repairs

Infrastructure damage spreads beyond the rooting site

Feral hogs can damage boundary and interior fences, hay fields, orchards, farm equipment and irrigation systems. A breach is not just a repair invoice: it can release livestock, require extra inspection and allow further crop or pasture damage before it is found. Repeated breaks may force a different fence design, stronger posts or more frequent patrols.

Rooting around water points and irrigation components can undermine lines, valves, ditches or access roads. Texas A&M identifies irrigation damage, added fuel use and equipment wear among the consequences of feral hog activity. Repairs may involve parts and labor, while the interrupted water delivery can reduce crop performance or increase the time needed to irrigate.

Feed consumption is an operating expense

Hogs also consume feed intended for livestock. Every bag, bale or load that must be replaced is a direct cost, and contamination or disturbance around feeders can increase handling and cleaning work. Keep feed consumed by wildlife in a separate line from livestock production losses; combining them makes it difficult to see whether a fence, feeder or access change is solving the problem.

A practical property-damage inventory

  1. Walk the perimeter and mark breaches, rooting, wallows, damaged gates and water points with the date.
  2. Photograph the condition before repairs, using a consistent route so repeat damage is visible.
  3. Record parts, contractor charges, labor hours, machine time and any interrupted operation.
  4. Note secondary losses, such as escaped animals, unusable irrigation time or feed replacement.
  5. Compare repeat repair locations with your control or exclusion work to identify persistent hotspots.

4. Livestock losses and disease risk

Predation and direct animal loss

USDA APHIS identifies livestock predation as a feral-swine production impact. The exposure is not uniform: animal type, season, fencing, water sources and local hog density all affect the result. A defensible farm estimate should identify the animals involved, the evidence for a hog-related loss and the value assigned to each animal rather than applying a single loss rate to every operation.

Disease transmission can affect production and trade

Feral hogs can transmit diseases to livestock. The consequence may involve animal illness or death, testing and management requirements, and effects that extend beyond one pasture. APHIS specifically notes potential consequences for international trade. The presence of hogs does not establish that a particular disease event came from them, so disease-related accounting should identify confirmed diagnoses, veterinary documentation and any official restrictions rather than treating every sick animal as a feral-hog loss.

What the multi-state survey measured

The USDA APHIS National Wildlife Research Center reported $40 million in annual livestock predation and disease damages across the 13-state survey region in 2025. That figure is an extrapolation from a survey of more than 6,300 livestock producers; it is not a national total. APHIS reported substantially higher damage for cattle operations in Texas and Arkansas than for other state and livestock-operation groups in that survey. The geographic and livestock differences are why a national average would be misleading for an individual ranch.

Figure Publisher and year What it measures How to interpret it
$272 million Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, 2020, summarizing a 2020 study Crop-production losses in one year across 12 states with feral hog populations Crop damage only; not a total farm-and-ranch cost
$40 million annually USDA APHIS National Wildlife Research Center, 2025 Livestock predation and disease damages across a 13-state survey region Survey-based extrapolation from more than 6,300 producers; not a national estimate
More than $670 million Texas A&M AgriLife Extension project summary, 2025 Agricultural losses reported by the project Do not add to other estimates without reconciling scope and method
At least $130 million per year Texas A&M AgriLife Extension project summary, 2025 Texas landowner spending on feral-hog control and damage mitigation Prevention and control spending, not damage losses
$13.2 million Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, 2025 Estimated economic benefit from 2024 activity that removed 34,000 hogs across more than 4.7 million acres Program-specific reported benefit; not total statewide avoided damage

These estimates differ by geography, year, population, category and method. Older Texas figures should not be presented as a trend against newer statewide estimates unless the underlying methods are comparable.

How to estimate the cost on your own operation

  1. Map the damage. Mark crop patches, pasture rooting, fence breaks, water or irrigation failures, feed losses and livestock incidents. Record dates so recurring activity is separated from one-time damage.
  2. Classify each loss. Use separate categories for destroyed production, reduced production, repairs, extra operating expense, control spending and livestock or disease events.
  3. Price physical losses. Apply your documented yield, market or replacement value to the affected acreage, animals, feed or materials. Keep assumptions visible instead of using a broad regional figure as a substitute.
  4. Capture time and machinery. Include additional passes, fuel, machine hours, contractor charges and labor caused by ruts, access problems or repairs.
  5. Separate prevention from damage. Trapping, fencing and monitoring may reduce future losses, but their cost is not evidence of the amount already lost.
  6. Review the ledger after each control effort. Compare new damage at the same locations and note whether the type, frequency or size of losses changed.

Mitigation choices and rules to check

Trapping is one documented feral-hog control method, but the sources do not establish one universally appropriate technique, product or success rate. The right choice depends on the target damage, acreage, terrain, livestock presence, access and applicable state or local rules. Texas guidance notes that transporting live hogs is regulated by the Texas Animal Health Commission. Anyone considering a corral trap or another live-capture setup should verify current requirements before moving animals and should plan for safe handling, containment and disposal consistent with those rules.

Control decisions work best when they are tied to the cost ledger. A fence repair may protect a high-value crop, while a trap may be more relevant where repeated rooting affects several fields. Monitoring, exclusion, direct removal and education can be parts of an integrated approach; none should be presented as a guaranteed solution for every farm or ranch. Measure the result by the damage categories that matter to your operation: fewer rooted acres, restored grazing days, fewer fence breaches, lower feed loss or fewer livestock incidents.
