How Heavy Was the Biggest Bison? The Record Depends on What You Count

A 1,724-kilogram semidomestic American bison is the largest reported living figure, while a 1,270-kilogram wild bull is the leading wild claim. Neither is fully documented as a worldwide record.

There is no fully documented, universally accepted record for the largest bison ever recorded worldwide. The strongest figures currently available belong to different categories: a secondary reference reports a 1,724-kilogram (3,801-pound) semidomestic American bison, while the same reference gives 1,270 kilograms (2,800 pounds) for a wild plains-bison bull. Guinness World Records gives American bison a species-level maximum of about 1 tonne (2,200 pounds), not an individually verified global record.

Those numbers cannot be treated as interchangeable. A live animal weighed on a documented scale is different from a broad species description, and both differ from a mass reconstructed from fossils. The most accurate answer is therefore conditional: 1,724 kilograms is the largest reported figure in the available secondary material, but it is not a fully verified worldwide record because the animal’s identity, date, location and weighing method have not been established.

What is the largest bison ever recorded?

If “largest” means the heaviest living individual mentioned in the available references, the leading reported figure is 1,724 kg (3,801 lb) for a semidomestic American bison. That number appears in an Encyclopedia of Life aggregation, but the underlying weighing record is not supplied there. Without a named animal, date, place and measurement procedure, it should be described as a reported maximum rather than a settled world record.

For a wild animal, the same secondary source reports a plains-bison bull weighing 1,270 kg (2,800 lb). This is a more conservative answer to “How heavy was the biggest wild bison?”, yet it also needs attribution because the primary record was not checked in the material available here.

Guinness World Records provides a useful species benchmark: adult male American bison can weigh up to 1 tonne (2,200 lb), and another Guinness page describes American bison as weighing nearly a tonne. Those pages discuss the species and its North American size context; they do not identify an individual as the heaviest bison on Earth.

Consequently, a careful headline answer is: 1,724 kg (3,801 lb) is the largest reported living-bison figure, 1,270 kg (2,800 lb) is the reported wild-bull figure, and neither is fully documented as a worldwide record.

Why the word “largest” needs a definition

A superlative sounds precise, but it can hide several different comparisons. Before accepting a number, specify all of the following:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Measurement: Are you comparing live body weight, body length, shoulder height or horn span?
  • Animal status: Was the bison wild, captive, farmed or semidomestic?
  • Taxon: Does the claim concern living American or European bison, or an extinct species known only from fossils?
  • Evidence: Is the figure tied to a primary weighing record, a scientific dataset, a reputable reference summary or an unsourced repetition?
  • Documentation: Does the source name the animal, date, location, scale and procedure?

A wild bull, a semidomestic animal and a fossil reconstruction answer different questions. Combining them into one leaderboard creates a false sense of certainty.

Reported living-bison weights compared

Category Reported mass Source context How to describe it
Semidomestic American bison 1,724 kg (3,801 lb) Encyclopedia of Life aggregation; the surfaced material does not identify the animal or provide primary weighing documentation. Largest reported living figure in this source set, not a verified worldwide record.
Wild plains-bison bull 1,270 kg (2,800 lb) Encyclopedia of Life aggregation; the primary record was not established in the available material. Reported heaviest wild-bull figure, requiring attribution.
Adult male American bison Up to 1 tonne (2,200 lb) Guinness World Records species-level description, identified as a 2018 page. Species-size context, not an individual record.
American bison Nearly 1 tonne (2,200 lb) Guinness World Records page describing the largest land migrant on land, accessed in 2026. Broad species description, not a named heaviest animal.

The table shows why different websites can present apparently conflicting answers. They may be using different populations and different standards of proof rather than measuring the same record.

The reported 1,724-kilogram semidomestic animal

The 1,724-kilogram figure converts to 3,801 pounds and is the largest number in the available living-animal references. “Semidomestic” matters: an animal managed by people is not directly comparable with a free-ranging bison exposed to natural forage, seasonal conditions and environmental limits.

What is missing is as important as the number itself. The available summary does not establish:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • the bison’s individual identity or sex;
  • the farm, ranch, reserve or other location;
  • the date and time of weighing;
  • whether the scale was calibrated and what type it was;
  • whether the animal was weighed live, after transport or under another condition;
  • whether the value was a measured weight or a rounded estimate repeated by later sources.

Until those details are located in a primary record, the responsible wording is “a semidomestic American bison was reported at 1,724 kilograms,” not “the world-record bison weighed 1,724 kilograms.” The distinction protects readers from mistaking a secondary compilation for a certified record.

The 1,270-kilogram wild plains-bison bull

The reported wild maximum is 1,270 kilograms, or 2,800 pounds. It is associated with a plains-bison bull, a category that is more specific than the general term “American bison.” It is also lower than the semidomestic figure, which is unsurprising when the comparison separates managed and free-ranging animals, but the number still needs a source trail.

A wild-bison claim should ideally state where the animal lived, when it was weighed, whether it was captured or handled for research, and whether the value came from a direct scale reading. A reference that supplies only a maximum number cannot answer those questions. Treat the figure as a useful reported benchmark, not as proof that no wild bison was heavier.

What Guinness World Records actually establishes

Guinness is valuable here for scale, but its surfaced bison pages do not settle the individual-record question. One page describes American bison as weighing nearly a tonne while discussing the species as North America’s largest terrestrial animal and its status as the largest land migrant. Another Guinness page says adult male American bison can weigh up to one tonne and identifies the African elephant as the largest living land-based animal overall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These statements establish broad biological context:

  • an adult male American bison can approach 1,000 kilograms;
  • the species is exceptionally large among North American land mammals;
  • bison are not the largest living land animals globally.

They do not provide a named animal, a weighing date or a certified 1,724-kilogram record. Calling the Guinness species maximum a worldwide individual record would overstate what those pages say.

Where extinct giant bison fit

Bison latifrons, commonly called the giant bison, is an extinct form mentioned in the International Union for Conservation of Nature Species Survival Commission’s American Bison report. Fossils indicate a very large animal, but the available extract does not provide a verified maximum mass for an individual.

Fossil comparisons use reconstructed dimensions. Scientists infer body size from bones and related measurements, then estimate mass with models. That is fundamentally different from placing a living bison on a scale. Even a well-supported fossil estimate should therefore be written as “an estimated mass for an extinct species,” never as the measured weight of the largest bison ever recorded.

How to test a claim that a bison broke the record

When you encounter a dramatic weight online, use this verification sequence before repeating it:

  1. Identify the animal. Look for a name, tag number, herd and species or subspecies.
  2. Classify the setting. Record whether it was wild, captive, farmed or semidomestic.
  3. Find the original measurement. Prefer a scale ticket, veterinary or research record, official record-book entry or scientific dataset.
  4. Check the date and place. A number without when and where cannot be independently checked.
  5. Check the method. Confirm that it was a live weight, identify the scale and note any handling or transport conditions.
  6. Separate measured facts from estimates. Fossil mass, visual guesses and rounded species maxima belong in different categories.
  7. Track the citation chain. If several pages repeat the same number but all trace back to one uncited sentence, they are not independent confirmations.

This process explains why the 1,724-kilogram claim remains provisional. It supplies a striking figure but not the documentation needed to certify a global record.

Why bison weights are difficult to compare

Weight is not a fixed property of a species. A measurement can change with age, sex, body condition, season, recent feeding and the circumstances of handling. Scale capacity, calibration and rounding also affect how a number should be interpreted. Those factors do not make a measurement useless; they make its conditions essential to the claim.

For that reason, a reliable comparison reports the exact category and qualification alongside the number. “Up to 1 tonne” is a species-level statement. “1,270 kilograms for a reported wild bull” is an attributed individual claim. “1,724 kilograms for a reported semidomestic bison” is a larger but incompletely documented claim. Removing those qualifiers turns different kinds of evidence into a misleading single statistic.

What the Wichita Mountain data can and cannot show

An Oklahoma State University-hosted paper, American Bison Weights and Measurements from the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge, is an empirical dataset from a defined refuge population. Such a dataset can help readers understand real measurements taken under a stated management program, and it is stronger evidence than an unattributed web list.

However, the available material does not establish that the paper contains the largest bison ever weighed worldwide. A local refuge dataset and a global record claim have different purposes. Use the paper to understand measured variation in a documented population, not to declare a universal maximum unless its own data and methods support that conclusion.

A practical answer for different reader questions

“What is the biggest bison ever recorded?”

The safest answer is that no fully documented worldwide winner is established here. The largest reported living figure is 1,724 kilograms for a semidomestic American bison, but its primary documentation is unresolved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“How heavy was the biggest wild bison?”

A secondary reference reports 1,270 kilograms (2,800 pounds) for a wild plains-bison bull. Present it as a reported figure, not an independently verified all-time record.

“Can I quote one tonne as the record?”

No. Guinness uses nearly one tonne or up to one tonne as species-level context for adult male American bison. It does not identify an individual worldwide record-holder on the pages described here.

“Was the giant bison heavier than living bison?”

That cannot be answered with a verified number from the available IUCN extract. Fossil species such as Bison latifrons are discussed through reconstructed size, not a recorded live weight.

The bottom line on the largest bison

The evidence supports a ranked set of carefully labeled claims, not one uncontested champion. A semidomestic American bison is reported at 1,724 kilograms (3,801 pounds), a wild plains-bison bull at 1,270 kilograms (2,800 pounds), and adult male American bison at up to about one tonne in Guinness’s species descriptions. Because the largest figure lacks a traceable primary weighing record, it should remain a reported maximum rather than a certified worldwide record.
