Kanga, a nervous stray, gradually gained confidence at the ASPCA Behavioral Rehabilitation Center in Weaverville, North Carolina, before joining a family with two dogs of her own. Her adjustment took patience and routine—and her bond with the family’s older dog, Samson, and playful younger dog, Charlie, became central to her new life.
From watching the playgroup to joining in
The ASPCA says Kanga arrived at its Behavioral Rehabilitation Center in February 2025 after being found as a stray. She was nervous, particularly in busy or high-energy settings. Over four months, staff saw her become more confident and social, including around other dogs.

Placement Coordinator Sami Seiden recalled that Kanga initially watched a large playgroup from a distance. “About five steps behind the chaos stood Kanga, watching, tail wagging and clearly wanting to join,” Seiden said. Kanga gradually moved closer. She graduated from the program in early July 2025, ready for adoption.
How Kanga met Charlie and Samson
Andrew and Jessica had previously adopted Cheddar, a Beagle, from the Center. After Cheddar died, they later adopted Charlie and began talking about adding a third dog to their household, which also included their older dog, Samson.

The couple applied to adopt a different dog, but Seiden suggested they meet Kanga. They introduced the dogs in late July. The ASPCA account describes a promising moment: while Kanga was eating a treat, Charlie approached, and she stayed comfortable with him nearby. The family adopted her.
What helped Kanga settle at home
Kanga was initially fearful and kept to herself. Andrew and Jessica maintained a consistent routine, and Samson offered her companionship. Andrew said, “They realized quickly that Kanga thrives on consistency, so they began to keep a strict routine for her benefit.”

Her confidence grew gradually. Andrew recalled, “By her third night, she worked up the courage to come into the bedroom and climb onto the bed.” Over time, she began approaching Andrew and Jessica for affection and became more comfortable entering rooms when visitors were present.
Her adjustment was still in progress: the family said she remained shy with visitors and needed work on housetraining. Andrew’s advice, based on their experience, was to be patient, establish a routine, and let a fearful dog approach on the dog’s own terms. “No dog is going to be perfect when you first take them home,” he said.

How Kanga gets along with the other dogs
Kanga became a playmate for Charlie, who had not previously learned how to play with another dog. Andrew described the two playing energetically every day. With Samson, Kanga was gentle. The family felt Samson seemed happier with a companion to look after.
The ASPCA story also mentions neighborhood walks and a chew toy among Kanga’s favorite activities. Andrew summed up her place in the household this way: “She’s home and she knows it.”

Why the ASPCA connects adoption with its Rescue Effect campaign
The ASPCA says Kanga’s adoption frees space and resources at the Behavioral Rehabilitation Center and other shelters to help more animals. That is the organization’s explanation of its Rescue Effect campaign; the story does not quantify the impact of this individual adoption.
