Hiding, a rigid crouch, flattened ears, hissing, chasing, or a sudden change in eating or litter-box habits can mean a cat is struggling with an introduction. Read the whole situation—not one gesture—and separate the cats if the interaction escalates. Then return to a calmer introduction step rather than forcing them to continue.
How to read warning signs during a cat introduction
These are observable cues, not a diagnostic checklist: a single signal does not prove that a cat will attack or that the pair can never live together. Consider posture, other signals, whether the cat can retreat, and whether the behavior is new. Several signs together—or a cat being pursued or blocked from leaving—deserve more caution than an isolated gesture.

Compare sessions by how the cats behave, not simply by how many days have passed. Look for relaxed rather than tense posture, voluntary approach rather than persistent avoidance, quiet rather than threat vocalizations, willingness to eat or play at a comfortable distance, and the ability to retreat without pursuit.
10 warning signs to watch for
1. Hiding or persistent avoidance
A cat that repeatedly hides, moves away, or avoids interaction may be stressed. Give the cat a safe place to withdraw; do not coax or carry it closer to the other cat.

2. Crouching or hugging the walls
A low, guarded posture or moving close to walls can signal stress. Notice whether the cat is trying to keep distance or find a route away.
3. Tense muscles or a rigid posture
Watch the whole body for tension rather than relying on one gesture. A cat that looks rigid or braced is not showing the relaxed body language you want during a controlled session.
4. Wide eyes or dilated pupils
Wide eyes or enlarged pupils can accompany stress or defensive arousal. They are more informative alongside posture, ear position, vocalizations, and what is happening around the cat than on their own.

5. Ears held sideways or back
Ears turned sideways or held back are a warning cue when they appear with other fearful or defensive signals. Pause and assess whether the cat can move away comfortably.
6. Puffed tail or raised fur
A puffed tail or raised fur indicates high arousal or a threat display. Do not treat it as an invitation to bring the cats closer.
7. Hissing, growling, spitting, or yowling
These vocalizations show that the interaction is not calm. Hissing or growling during visual contact is a reason to end that session and return to an easier stage; spitting or escalating vocalizations call for separation.

8. Swatting or striking
Swatting is an aggressive behavior, not a cue to let the cats settle it themselves. Separate them safely and slow the introduction.
9. Stalking, chasing, lunging, or blocking
Stalking and chasing can be territorial behaviors; lunging or blocking can prevent the other cat from getting away or reaching a resource. Stop the interaction if one cat is pursuing or trapping the other.
10. Changes in appetite or elimination
An introduction can be stressful enough to coincide with reduced appetite or inappropriate elimination even without a fight. Contact a veterinarian promptly if a cat stops eating, develops unusual physical signs, or has a sudden behavior change; stress should not be assumed to be the only cause.

What to do when a warning sign appears
- Separate the cats if tension is escalating. Do not force continued contact or put your hands between fighting cats. Give each cat a secure separate area.
- Return to the last step that was calm. If seeing each other through a barrier led to hissing or growling, go back to scent exchange, door-based exposure, or location swapping before trying visual contact again. Follow a gradual introduction plan such as VCA’s guide to introducing new adult cats.
- Use short, controlled sessions at a comfortable distance. Food or play can help build a positive association, but only if both cats can remain relaxed. If a cat cannot comfortably eat in the other cat’s presence, increase the distance or return to an easier stage.
- Advance based on calm behavior, not the calendar. Wait for repeated relaxed, supervised interactions before moving forward. When you begin unsupervised contact, keep it brief and increase the time gradually.
- Get help when health or safety is at stake. Ask a veterinarian about sudden behavior changes, appetite loss, unusual physical signs, or possible pain or illness. For continuing aggression, seek a qualified cat behavior professional.
How long should introductions take?
There is no reliable fixed timetable: an introduction may take days, weeks, or months. If stress appears, slow down rather than pushing through the current stage. Some cats may not become compatible housemates even with careful introductions; VCA’s guidance on getting a second cat notes that integration can vary.
Can hissing be normal?
Hissing is a warning that the interaction is not comfortable, but a single hiss does not by itself establish that the cats will never coexist. End or ease the session, give both cats room to retreat, and resume at a level where they can remain calm. If hissing becomes part of escalating aggression, separate them and slow the process.

Can a pheromone diffuser help?
VCA notes that feline pheromones are available as sprays and diffusers and may help reduce signs of stress. A diffuser is optional support, not a guarantee or a replacement for gradual exposure, safe separation, and veterinary guidance when needed.
