Kate Toyer’s account is a first-person story about becoming able to live openly as a transgender woman while protecting the relationships that mattered most: her marriage, children, veterinary team, clients, and local community. A veterinarian and practice owner in southern New South Wales, Australia, Toyer describes a gradual process of self-understanding, disclosure, and workplace communication rather than a single defining moment.

Published by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) on June 28, 2021, the piece belongs to AAHA’s “Journeys” series. It is a personal narrative, not a clinical guide, a survey of transgender veterinarians, or an independently evaluated workplace case study.

What Kate Toyer’s journey is about

Toyer presents her transition as one part of a much larger life. She identifies as a veterinarian, practice owner, wife, parent, feminist, equality advocate, and trans woman. She and her family live and work on Walbunga land in Yuin nation, in the town commonly known in Western society as Batemans Bay, New South Wales.

The central decision in her story was to stop allowing other people’s expectations about her gender to dictate how she lived. She also wanted to decide how, when, and to whom she would explain that change. Her account connects private identity with practical responsibilities: telling a spouse, preparing children and staff, communicating with clients, and continuing to run a veterinary practice in a close-knit community.

Her experience cannot stand in for every trans person’s experience. It does, however, show how one veterinary professional approached disclosure while trying to preserve safety, dignity, and control over her own story.

“I wanted to be a veterinarian—and a girl”

Toyer writes that two ambitions were present in childhood: she wanted to become a veterinarian, and she wanted to be a girl. The veterinary ambition was easy to name. The gendered part of her identity was not. When she tried to share those feelings as a teenager, she received a negative response and learned to keep them hidden.

That silence did not make the feelings disappear. Instead, she moved into adulthood carrying an unresolved conflict between the person she knew herself to be and the male role others expected her to perform. The story is careful not to turn childhood awareness into a universal timetable. Toyer is describing when she recognized something about herself, not prescribing when anyone else should know or disclose their gender.

Building a life that looked settled from the outside

Toyer attended the University of Sydney and became a veterinarian. She married Tara, raised a family, and built a career that eventually included owning a practice. From the outside, she says, her life could appear happy and complete.

Yet professional achievement, marriage, and parenthood did not resolve the strain of living as male. This distinction is important to her account: distress was not proof that her family was a mistake or that her veterinary career had failed. The problem was the continuing demand to suppress a central part of herself.

For years, she managed that tension privately. Later, online message boards and support groups gave her a way to encounter other people describing experiences that felt familiar. Those connections helped turn an isolated private question into something she could examine with other people’s support.

Why 2011 became a turning point

By 2011, Toyer concluded that she needed to tell her wife and, eventually, other people. She does not describe this as an impulsive announcement or as a decision made by outside authorities. It was a personal judgment that continuing to hide was no longer sustainable.

Her first major conversation was with Tara. Toyer writes that their love remained the foundation on which they could rebuild their relationship. The wording matters because it avoids presenting transition as a simple before-and-after event. Disclosure changed the way the couple understood their life together, but it did not erase the history, affection, or responsibilities they shared.

Toyer and Tara also had to think about their children and the practical consequences of a family member becoming more visible in a small community. The account does not claim that every spouse, child, or family will respond in the same way. It shows only how this family began preparing for change together.

How Toyer planned disclosure at the clinic and in the community

One of the clearest parts of the story is the communication plan Toyer and Tara developed. They wanted to keep control of their timing and voice while giving people closest to them enough information to act as allies. Their approach unfolded in stages.

  1. Prepare the people closest to the family. They began with family members, clinic staff, and their children’s schools. These groups were positioned to provide day-to-day support and to help children and employees respond confidently when questions arose.
  2. Build a shared understanding before a public announcement. Rather than asking clients or the wider community to interpret rumors, Toyer and Tara first made sure their core allies knew what was happening and how the family wanted to communicate it.
  3. Explain the change to clients gradually. They planned a client-facing explanation that would allow conversations to happen in a measured way, instead of forcing every client to receive the news at once without context.
  4. Make a broader announcement when the timing required it. Rumors began moving faster than the planned schedule. Toyer and Tara therefore brought the announcement forward, choosing to communicate directly rather than allow speculation to define the story.

Toyer summarizes the principle behind this plan in the line, “This was our life, our story; we would own it and control it.” That sentence does not mean every detail could be controlled. It describes their decision to control the message, the order of disclosure, and the people they relied on first.

Why preparing allies came first

Starting with staff, family, and schools gave the people around Toyer a chance to ask questions privately and understand how to support her. In a veterinary practice, staff members also shape a client’s daily experience, so their preparation had an immediate operational value: they could respond consistently instead of improvising under pressure.

The same logic applied to schools. Children were not left to explain a family change to classmates without support from adults who already understood the situation. Toyer’s account does not provide a universal script for schools or clinics, but it demonstrates the value she placed on preparation before broad disclosure.

Why the schedule changed

The original plan allowed for a gradual explanation to clients followed by a wider announcement. Once rumors accelerated, that sequence no longer offered the same control. Moving the announcement forward was a response to circumstances, not evidence that a staged process had failed.

This part of the story highlights a practical limit of any disclosure plan: people outside the intended audience may begin talking before the person is ready. Toyer and Tara retained control by changing the timing themselves and speaking publicly on their own terms.

How people responded

Toyer reports support from clinic staff, schools, clients, and the broader community. She also encountered some unsupportive responses. The article does not reduce the community to one reaction, and it does not claim that acceptance was automatic.

That mixture is significant for readers in client-facing professions. A supportive workplace is not created merely by issuing a statement. It depends on whether colleagues know how to respond, whether leaders make room for questions without making the trans person educate everyone alone, and whether clients are given clear information. Toyer’s experience suggests that preparation helped the people around her respond constructively, while also acknowledging that not everyone would be supportive.

Because this is a personal narrative, it does not measure retention, client numbers, revenue, staff wellbeing, or other workplace outcomes before and after transition. No independently verified statistic should be inferred from the account.

What the story asks of veterinary medicine

Toyer’s conclusion is an argument about who gets to define inclusion. She writes: “We need to stop talking about what we think people of diverse backgrounds want and start giving them the microphone so they can tell us what they actually need.”

For veterinary organizations, that means trans and gender-diverse people should be included explicitly in equality conversations rather than treated as an unspoken subcategory. It also means listening to people with different backgrounds instead of assuming that one policy, one training session, or one public statement will meet everyone’s needs.

Lessons that can be drawn from her account

  • Let the person most affected lead the disclosure. Toyer and Tara chose the timing, audience, and wording instead of delegating the story to rumor or institutional messaging.
  • Prepare close allies before a broad announcement. Family, staff, and schools were informed early so they could provide practical support.
  • Plan for more than one audience. A spouse, children, employees, clients, and neighbors may need different explanations and different kinds of support.
  • Keep the plan adaptable. When rumors changed the circumstances, Toyer and Tara changed the schedule.
  • Do not confuse one person’s account with a universal formula. The approach worked in the circumstances Toyer describes; another person may need a different sequence, level of disclosure, or safety plan.

What this article does not establish

AAHA’s page is not a clinical or mental-health resource. It does not evaluate hormone therapy, surgery, legal processes, or workplace policy compliance, and it does not provide medical advice for transgender people or their families.

The article mentions figures relating to suicide attempts, homicide risk, and sexual assault, but it does not supply enough original-study information to verify their definitions, population, geography, date, or publisher. Those numbers should not be repeated as established statistics on the strength of this article alone.

The page names PFLAG, the Human Rights Campaign, GLAAD, The Trevor Project, and PrideVMC as organizations readers may wish to explore. The article describes PrideVMC as dedicated to improving the LGBTQIA+ veterinary community. Names and services can change, so readers should confirm each organization’s current scope, location, and available support directly before relying on it.

Questions readers often have about Toyer’s account

When did Toyer first know she was trans?

She says that as a child she wanted to be a girl, alongside her wish to become a veterinarian. A negative response when she tried to share those feelings as a teenager led her to hide them for years.

Was she unhappy with her family or veterinary career?

She describes an outwardly happy life that included marriage, children, and professional success. Her account says those achievements did not remove the strain of being expected to live as male; it does not portray her family or career as the source of that strain.

When did she tell her wife?

She decided by 2011 that she needed to tell Tara and eventually others. Toyer says their love remained a basis for rebuilding their relationship.

How did she tell staff and clients?

She and Tara first prepared family, clinic staff, and their children’s schools as core allies. They then planned a gradual client explanation and a wider announcement. When rumors accelerated, they moved the announcement forward.

The larger meaning of “be true to yourself”

Toyer’s story is not presented as a model in which every transition follows the same sequence. Its value is more specific: it shows a veterinarian deciding that honesty about gender identity was necessary, then treating disclosure as a family and workplace communication challenge that deserved preparation.

Her account also expands the picture of who belongs in veterinary medicine. A trans veterinarian can be a clinician, practice owner, spouse, parent, colleague, and community member at the same time. Making room for that whole person requires more than assumptions about what diversity should look like. It requires listening to trans and gender-diverse people describe what support means in their own workplaces and communities.
