How Kids Can Draw Cats: Easy Shapes, Creative Prompts, and Story Ideas

A practical, child-led guide to drawing cats: start with simple shapes, add expressive features and a tail, then let children choose the pattern, colors, setting, and story.

To draw a cat with a child, begin with a few loose shapes: an oval or rounded head, a larger body, two triangular ears, and a tail. Add a very light cross on the head if the child wants help placing the eyes and nose, then invite them to choose the cat’s expression, markings, colors, and setting. The goal is a drawing the child can explain and enjoy—not a perfect copy.

What you need for a child’s cat drawing

Ordinary supplies are enough. Set out paper and one or two drawing tools first; add color only if the child wants it. UNICEF’s Early Childhood Development Kit Guidance lists A3 or A4 paper, crayons, and colored pencils for drawing activities. The Arts Unit’s Cat-toons! classroom resource lists paper, lead pencils, and coloring materials such as pencils, textas, crayons, or paints. Its related collage activity also uses scissors and glue.

  • Paper, either A4 or A3
  • A pencil, crayon, or lead pencil for the first outline
  • Crayons, colored pencils, textas, or paint for color
  • Optional scissors and glue for a collage version

There is no need for a special kit, anatomical model, or premium paper. A child can make the entire activity with a sheet of paper and a crayon. If the child wants repeated, guided practice, How to Draw Cats & Kittens by Walter Foster is an optional children’s drawing book; it is not necessary for the activities below.

Choose the kind of cat activity that fits the child

Some children prefer a sequence they can follow. Others want to invent a character or tell a story. The three formats below use the same basic materials but give the adult a different role.

The Arts Unit’s Cat-toons! resource is designed for Years 3 and 4 and focuses on cartoon cats, character, expression, and reflection on different interpretations. UNICEF guidance presents free drawing and conversation around children’s artwork. Neither source says that one format is best for every child, so offer a choice when possible.

Step-by-step: a recognizable cat from simple shapes

Use this as a flexible starting point rather than a template the child must match. Keep the first marks thin or light so they can be changed.

  1. Place the cat on the page. Ask whether the cat will sit, stand, curl up, or appear in profile. Leave room for ears, feet, and a tail. A quick, light outline prevents the drawing from becoming crowded at one edge.
  2. Block in the head. Draw an oval, circle, or softly squared shape. It can be wide for a kitten, narrow for a sleek cat, or tilted to suggest movement.
  3. Add the body. Use a larger oval or bean shape beneath or beside the head. Overlap the shapes slightly so the cat looks connected rather than assembled from separate stickers.
  4. Attach the ears. Place two triangles or rounded triangles on top of the head. Uneven ears are fine; one ear turned sideways can make the cat look alert or playful.
  5. Use a light placement guide if helpful. Canson’s cat tutorial recommends a quick, thin outline and a cross on the head. Draw one vertical and one horizontal line lightly across the head. The crossing point helps the child place the nose and keep the eyes at a similar height. Erase or cover the guide later, or leave it out entirely if it feels distracting.
  6. Place the eyes. Put an eye on either side of the guide, then choose round, narrow, closed, surprised, or sleepy shapes. The child can make the eyes intentionally different to create a comic expression.
  7. Add the nose and mouth. A small triangle, dot, or heart-like shape works for the nose. Two short lines can form a mouth; a curved line upward suggests a cheerful expression, while a straight or downward curve changes the mood.
  8. Draw whiskers and other face details. Add a few whiskers, eyebrows, inner ears, or cheek marks. There is no required number. Let the child decide whether the cat is realistic, cartoon-like, or fantastical.
  9. Shape the legs and paws. Simple columns, curved lines, or tucked paws communicate the pose. For a sitting cat, the front legs can run straight down and the back legs can form a rounded haunch.
  10. Give the cat a tail. A long curve, a curled question-mark shape, or a short fluffy tail can show personality. The tail may point toward something in the scene.
  11. Choose markings and color. Invite stripes, spots, patches, a dark tail tip, or an entirely imaginary pattern. Use crayons, colored pencils, textas, or paint after the child is satisfied with the outline—or color immediately if that is more enjoyable.
  12. Finish the setting. Add a cushion, window, garden, moon, toy, food bowl, or any place the cat might be. A setting turns the figure into a scene without requiring detailed drawing.

Demonstrate one step at a time, then pause. If an adult draws the whole picture first, the child may focus on copying instead of making choices. Keep your example beside the child’s page, not over it.

Make a cartoon cat with character

A cartoon approach starts with the same shapes but treats every feature as a storytelling decision. The Arts Unit’s Cat-toons! activity asks children to create a cartoon character cat, communicate character and expression, and reflect on how drawings can be interpreted.

Build the character

Ask the child to pick one strong trait: shy, bossy, curious, sleepy, mischievous, brave, or friendly. Change the pose and face to match. A crouched body and wide eyes may suggest a cat hiding; a high tail and raised chin may suggest confidence. These are drawing choices, not tests of whether the child understands real cat behavior.

Use expression deliberately

Try several small faces on scrap paper before choosing one. Large pupils, raised eyebrows, an open mouth, or flattened ears can make the character look surprised, worried, excited, or annoyed. Encourage the child to name the feeling in their own words rather than insisting on a single interpretation.

Add a collage extension

Once the drawing is complete, the child can cut out the cat and glue it onto a drawn or painted background. Use scissors and glue only with supervision appropriate to the child’s age and setting. The collage can show the cat in a house, on a rooftop, in space, or in a completely invented world.

Open-ended cat prompts for free drawing

UNICEF’s early-childhood guidance recommends giving children drawing materials, letting them choose what to draw, and making clear that there is no right or wrong way to draw. Its wording is direct: “There is no right or wrong thing or way to draw.” Use that principle when the child does not want a step-by-step lesson.

  • Draw a favorite cat, a cat you have met, or an imaginary kitten.
  • Draw a cat doing something funny.
  • Draw a cat in a place it could never normally visit.
  • Draw what a cat might see from a window.
  • Invent a cat with unusual ears, paws, colors, or a magical tail.
  • Draw two cats that are having a conversation.

Afterward, invite the child to share the picture with an open prompt such as “Tell me about your cat.” Follow-up questions can include “Where is it going?”, “What is its name?”, “What happened just before this picture?”, or “Which part would you like to change?” Listen to the explanation instead of grading the drawing against a model.

How to help without taking over

Offer choices, not corrections

Replace “Cats do not have ears like that” with “Would you like pointed ears, rounded ears, or something imaginary?” Choices preserve the child’s ownership while still offering a way forward when they are stuck.

Demonstrate on a separate sheet

If the child asks for help, draw a small example beside the main page. Keep your marks separate so the child can borrow an idea without losing control of the original picture.

Describe what you notice

Comments such as “I notice the tail curls around the paws” or “You used three colors in the stripes” are more useful than ranking the result as good or bad. They give the child language for choices without suggesting that only one style is successful.

Allow revisions and unfinished work

A child may want to turn a mistake into a whisker, cover it with color, start another page, or stop before the scene is complete. All of those are legitimate outcomes. Keep spare paper nearby rather than treating the first sheet as a final performance.

Common sticking points and gentle fixes

If the child says… Try this response
“My cat does not look right.” Ask which part they want to change, then offer a choice of shapes or poses. Avoid redrawing the whole cat for them.
“I cannot draw eyes.” Practice several eye shapes on scrap paper: dots, ovals, lines, closed arcs, or large cartoon circles.
“There is no room for the tail.” Turn the tail across the body, curl it under the paws, or add it as a second pose on a new page.
“I made a mistake.” Suggest incorporating it into a stripe, spot, shadow, toy, or background mark—or begin another drawing.
“I do not know what to draw.” Offer two prompts, such as “sleeping cat or jumping cat?” Let the child choose or invent a third option.

Ways to extend the activity

Make a character sheet

Draw the same cat with three expressions, three poses, or three different accessories. Label each picture with the child’s own words. This keeps the focus on variation rather than on reproducing one “correct” cat.

Create a short picture story

Use three pages: where the cat starts, what happens, and how the problem ends. The pictures can be simple. A tail pointing toward a door or a bowl moved across the floor can carry part of the story.

Compare interpretations respectfully

Display two or more drawings and ask what viewers notice in each one. The Arts Unit’s resource includes reflection on interpretations; the point is to discuss how marks communicate ideas, not to select a winner.

Keep a drawing folder

Date the pages if the child enjoys looking back at them. Treat the folder as a record of ideas and stories, not as evidence that a child’s drawing reveals intelligence, personality, mental health, or developmental status. The cited activity guidance does not support those conclusions.

When a book or more structure may help

A child who repeatedly asks “What do I do next?” may enjoy a guided drawing book such as Walter Foster’s How to Draw Cats & Kittens. Use a book as one source of prompts, then invite the child to alter the pose, expression, markings, or setting. A child who becomes frustrated by copying may do better with the free-drawing prompts and conversation approach described by UNICEF.

The practical test is simple: if the structure increases curiosity, keep it; if it turns drawing into a performance, loosen the steps. Ordinary paper and crayons remain sufficient either way.

A 20-minute cat-drawing plan

  1. Minutes 1–3: Put out paper and a pencil or crayon. Let the child choose a sitting, standing, sleeping, or imaginary cat.
  2. Minutes 4–8: Build the head, body, ears, face, legs, and tail with light shapes. Add the optional head cross only if placement help is wanted.
  3. Minutes 9–13: Choose an expression, pattern, and color scheme. Encourage the child to change any feature that does not match the character.
  4. Minutes 14–17: Add a setting or one object that explains what the cat is doing.
  5. Minutes 18–20: Ask the child to tell you about the drawing. Write down the title or a sentence from the child if they would like one.

This plan is a starting rhythm, not a deadline. The child may finish in five minutes, continue for an hour, or make several versions.
