Published estimates range from 10 days to three weeks for a fishless cycle in New Mexico State University Extension’s aquaponics guidance to three to eight weeks for a recirculating biofilter at 25–27°C (77–81°F), with longer times possible in cooler water. A University of Florida marine aquarium guide estimates three to four weeks. These are planning ranges for different systems and methods—not promises for every home tank. Test the water and wait for the cycle’s chemical signs before adding livestock.
What cycling an aquarium means
Cycling establishes nitrifying bacteria in the aquarium’s biological filter. These bacteria help process nitrogen waste through a sequence:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Ammonia enters the water from fish waste, decomposing material, or a controlled ammonia source during fishless cycling.
- Ammonia-oxidizing bacteria convert ammonia to nitrite.
- Other nitrifying bacteria convert nitrite to nitrate.
- Testing tracks the changes; nitrate is managed as part of ongoing aquarium care.
Ammonia and nitrite can harm fish. Nitrate is generally less toxic, but it still needs management. A working cycle means the biofilter can process ammonia; it does not mean every water-quality issue is settled.
How long the published estimates suggest
The figures below come from guidance for different types of aquatic systems. They help set expectations, but should not be treated as a direct comparison of identical home aquariums.

| System or method | Published estimate | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| New recirculating biofilter at 25–27°C (77–81°F), UF/IFAS Extension, FA099 | Three to eight weeks; potentially longer in cooler water | A broad estimate for establishing nitrifying bacteria in a recirculating aquaculture biofilter, not a home-tank guarantee. UF/IFAS Extension |
| New biofilter, UF/IFAS Extension, FA031 | Six to eight weeks | The guidance describes time to build enough bacteria to reduce ammonia and nitrite effectively. UF/IFAS Extension |
| Fishless cycle, NMSU Extension aquaponics guidance | 10 days to three weeks | A published estimate for fishless cycling in an aquaponics context; individual aquarium setups may take longer. New Mexico State University Extension |
| Cycling with fish, NMSU Extension aquaponics guidance | Four to six weeks | A published estimate in the same aquaponics guidance. Cycling without fish avoids exposing them to rising ammonia and nitrite. New Mexico State University Extension |
| Marine aquarium, UF/IFAS 4-H project guide | Three to four weeks | A guide-specific estimate, not a universal timeline for saltwater systems or every marine species. UF/IFAS Extension |
The practical expectation is several weeks. A fishless cycle may be quicker in some setups, but the calendar alone cannot tell you when your aquarium is ready.
How to tell when the cycle is complete
Use aquarium tests for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate, and follow the test kit’s instructions. NMSU Extension describes completion as ammonia and nitrite being near zero while nitrate is measurable. That is a useful checkpoint, not a reason to ignore livestock-specific needs or other water conditions.

- Do not add fish just because a certain number of days has passed.
- Look for ammonia and nitrite to fall to near-zero readings and for measurable nitrate, as interpreted with your test instructions.
- Make sure the aquarium is ready before bringing fish home. The CDC advises asking a veterinarian about cycling and balancing bacteria and nitrogen levels. CDC fish-care guidance
Finding nitrate by itself does not prove the aquarium is ready: the relevant checkpoint also includes near-zero ammonia and nitrite.
Fishless cycling versus cycling with fish
| Approach | Ammonia source | Fish exposure during cycling | Published timing in NMSU guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fishless | A controlled ammonia input | No fish need to be kept in water while ammonia and nitrite rise. | 10 days to three weeks in the aquaponics guidance |
| With fish | Fish waste and feeding | Fish are present while the biofilter develops, so they may be exposed to harmful ammonia and nitrite. | Four to six weeks in the same aquaponics guidance |
Fishless cycling is an option that avoids exposing fish to the rising ammonia and nitrite of a developing biofilter. If using an ammonia product as the controlled source, choose one without soaps, perfume, or other additives. Monitor ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate as the cycle progresses.

What can make cycling take longer
Cycle duration depends on the system and its conditions; changing one factor does not guarantee a specific shorter timeline.
- Temperature: UF/IFAS reports three to eight weeks for nitrifying bacteria to establish in a recirculating biofilter at 25–27°C (77–81°F), with more time potentially needed at cooler temperatures. FA099
- Fish load and feeding: The number of fish, food type, and feeding rate affect the ammonia load the biofilter must handle. UF/IFAS Extension, FA101
- Water chemistry and oxygen: pH, dissolved oxygen, and alkalinity influence cycling. Nitrifying bacteria need oxygen and alkalinity; low alkalinity can impair their function and allow pH to fall. UF/IFAS Extension, FA031 and FA101
- Biofilter maturity: A new system begins without an established bacterial population, so the biofilter needs time to build one. FA099
- System type: Estimates drawn from recirculating aquaculture, aquaponics, and an educational marine aquarium guide describe different contexts, so their timelines should not be collapsed into one exact prediction.
What changes for a saltwater aquarium
The UF/IFAS 4-H Marine Aquarium Project Book gives a three-to-four-week estimate for a marine aquarium, but that is a guide-specific planning figure rather than a universal rule. Use ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate readings to assess the nitrogen cycle for your tank.

Salinity is a separate setup parameter. The marine guide lists hydrometers and refractometers as tools for measuring it. A salinity reading does not show whether the nitrogen cycle is complete.

Use the calendar to plan, not to decide
Published estimates are useful for planning when to start an aquarium, but measured water quality is the better basis for deciding when to add livestock. Allow several weeks, monitor ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate, and wait for the cycle checkpoint rather than stocking on a preset date.
