The best cat scratcher is one your cat can use comfortably: match its orientation and surface to how your cat already scratches, then make sure it stays stable. Some cats prefer a vertical post, others a horizontal pad or slanted surface. There is no evidence here that one format or material is best for every cat, so observe your cat and offer suitable options.

Why cats scratch—and what a scratcher should do

Scratching is normal cat behavior associated with play, stretching, territorial marking and removing worn outer claw sheaths. The goal is not to stop it, but to provide acceptable places to do it. The ASPCA puts it this way: “The best tactic when dealing with scratching is not to try to stop your cat from scratching, but instead to teach her where and what to scratch.” ASPCA guidance on destructive scratching explains the behavior and redirection.

Vertical or horizontal: follow your cat’s posture

Vertical posts for upright scratching and stretching

A vertical post suits a cat that stands up to scratch furniture, doorframes or other upright surfaces. Stability is essential: the post should not wobble, slide or collapse as the cat leans into it. It also needs enough usable height for a full stretch. The ASPCA’s general-care guidance recommends a sturdy post at least three feet high; treat that as the organization’s recommendation, not a universal minimum proven for every cat or design. Horizontal pads for floor scratchers—and cats who need another option

If your cat scratches rugs or floors, try a horizontal pad. It can also be a more comfortable choice for a cat that has difficulty stretching up a tall post. International Cat Care cautions: “All cats should have opportunities to engage in scratching behaviour, but scratching on a tall vertical post can cause pain for some cats, so try offering a horizontal scratching surface instead.” International Cat Care’s home-modifications guide discusses scratching opportunities and comfort.

The Humane Society of the United States also suggests that a vertical post can sometimes be placed on its side to offer a horizontal scratching surface. Ensure it is stable in that position and does not shift when used.

Slanted scratchers for cats between the two

A slanted surface offers an intermediate angle. It may suit a cat that scratches at an incline or alternates between upright and floor-level surfaces. Orientation is individual: a slanted scratcher is another option to observe, not a guaranteed compromise.

Choose a surface your cat will use

Possible scratcher surfaces include cardboard, carpeting, wood, sisal and upholstery. Cats differ in the texture and grain they prefer. The Humane Society identifies sisal as a common preference, but that does not make it the right choice for every cat. If one material goes unused, try a different surface or orientation rather than assuming your cat has stopped needing a place to scratch. See the Humane Society’s cat-care tips for suggestions on surfaces and encouraging use.

  • Posture: Match the angle to the surfaces your cat already scratches—vertical, horizontal or slanted.
  • Stability: Check that the scratcher remains steady under pressure.
  • Height and footprint: For a post, allow a full stretch; for any format, consider whether it fits securely in the intended spot.
  • Surface: Choose a texture and grain your cat investigates or uses, and be willing to test another material if needed.
  • Comfort: Consider mobility and whether stretching up appears difficult or uncomfortable.
  • Placement: Prefer a format that can sit close to the place your cat already scratches.

Help your cat discover the new scratcher

  1. Put it near the existing target. Place the scratcher beside the furniture or other spot your cat already uses. A suitable surface in the right location is more useful than one placed far away.
  2. Offer more than one option when needed. If you are unsure about angle or material, provide alternatives and notice which your cat chooses.
  3. Invite exploration. The ASPCA and Humane Society suggest encouraging interest with play or catnip. Keep the scratcher secure while your cat investigates.
  4. Let your cat choose. Do not drag the cat’s paws across the surface or force it to use the scratcher. Observe actual use and adjust the position or format if it is ignored.

Why won’t my cat use a scratching post?

Start by checking whether the post matches your cat’s preferred angle and surface, whether it stays stable, and whether it is tall enough for a comfortable stretch. Its location may also matter: move it near the spot your cat already scratches. If a tall post seems uncomfortable, try a horizontal surface. Offer play or catnip as an invitation, not a requirement, and avoid forcing contact with the scratcher.
