How Long Does It Take a Rescue Cat to Adjust to a New Home?

Expect one to two weeks for a usual adjustment period and up to a month or more to fully settle, but every cat sets its own pace.

Plan on one to two weeks for a rescue cat to get through a normal adjustment period, and on up to a month, sometimes longer, before it feels fully part of the household. Those are guideposts, not deadlines. Some cats relax within hours, and others take months.

The timeframes, and why they differ

Three commonly cited figures look like they conflict. They actually describe different stages.

Stage Timeframe Source
Initial decompression “24-72 hours of decompression or more” Summit County Humane Society, Bringing Your New Kitty Home (publication date not stated)
Usual adjustment period “One to two weeks”; some cats need minutes or hours, others days, weeks or months Maddie’s Fund, Bringing Your New Cat Home, August 2019
Settling into the family and routine “Up to a month,” including the time it takes existing family members to adjust to the cat Paula Plummer, Cat Friendly Veterinary Professional certified technician, Texas A&M School of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, 2022

These are practical ranges from shelter and veterinary guidance. They are not controlled studies, and none of them predicts what your individual cat will do. Maddie’s Fund says the timeline depends on temperament, past experiences and the other animals in the home. A cat from a chaotic shelter or a rough history may need longer than a confident cat coming from a foster home.

Is it normal for a new rescue cat to hide?

Yes. Cats vary: some explore straight away, others disappear under a bed for days. Both reactions are described as normal. Hiding is the cat’s way of lowering its stress in an unfamiliar place, so don’t treat it as a sign you chose wrong or that the cat dislikes you.

How to set up the first days

Start with one quiet room

Choose a low-traffic room and furnish it before the cat arrives:

  • Litter tray, placed away from the food and water
  • Food and water
  • A bed or resting spot, plus familiar-smelling bedding if you have any from the shelter or foster home
  • At least one place to hide, such as a covered bed or a cardboard box (household items work fine)
  • A scratching surface and a few toys

Secure outside doors, windows and cat flaps for the whole adjustment period. A frightened new cat can bolt.

Use the carrier as a safe place

Veterinary guidance on feline environmental needs describes a carrier as a transportable safe place. The cat should be able to conceal itself in it, for example a covered design or a blanket draped over part of it. Leaving it open in the safe room gives the cat a ready-made hideout.

Let the cat set the pace

Sit quietly in the room, keep to a predictable routine, and let the cat approach you. Don’t pull a hiding cat out or force interaction. Open up the rest of the home gradually once the cat shows comfort, using its behavior rather than a fixed schedule as your guide.

Pheromone products are optional

A shy cat may only eat or use the litter tray when you’re out of the room. That still counts as progress. Look for patterns over several days rather than expecting an affectionate lap cat immediately.

When to call a veterinarian

If a cat stays stressed for a prolonged period with no improvement, Cats Protection advises contacting a veterinarian. The guidance reviewed gives no universal number of days or hours to wait, so if you’re worried about a cat that isn’t eating, drinking or using the litter tray, don’t wait for a deadline. Call your vet and describe what you’re seeing.
