How to Introduce a Newly Adopted Cat to Other Pets

Don’t start with a face-to-face meeting. Give the new cat its own quiet room, swap scents first, then allow short visual contact across a barrier while pairing it with food or rewards. Move to supervised time in the same room only while both animals stay relaxed. If either one turns aggressive, separate them and go back a step. The guidance below is strongest for cat-to-cat introductions, and it says plainly where it stops.

The staged plan for resident cats

The order below follows guidance from the ASPCA, the Humane Society of the United States (2020 and 2023 guides) and International Cat Care (2024). Let the cats’ behavior set the pace, not the calendar.

1. Prepare a safe room

Set up a quiet, secure room for the newcomer with food and water bowls, a litter box, and bedding or a hiding place. The ASPCA’s adoption advice lists a dedicated quiet space and these basic supplies. The Humane Society adds that cats should not be required to share a litter box. Keep the resident cat’s routine and territory as unchanged as you can.

The room also lets the new cat adjust before it explores the rest of the home. The Humane Society’s 2023 guide suggests confining the newcomer to a small area at first, potentially for up to a week. Treat that as a rough guide rather than a deadline. A cat that is still hiding and not eating needs longer.

2. Exchange scents

Once the newcomer is settling in, let each cat meet the other’s scent through bedding or other familiar items. International Cat Care advises doing this before any visual meeting, and waiting until the new cat has adjusted before swapping bedding. Leave the item where the other cat can approach it or ignore it, and don’t push a cat’s nose toward it. If either cat shows sustained distress, pause and give this stage more time.

3. Let each cat explore separately

Put the resident cat in another room and let the newcomer investigate part of the shared home. Then return the newcomer to its safe room. Keep these outings short and controlled so the newcomer isn’t overwhelmed. The Humane Society places this step before visual introductions.

4. Allow brief visual contact across a barrier

Let the cats see each other at a comfortable distance, with no physical access. A partly covered barrier or a secure baby gate across a doorway both work. The Humane Society specifically recommends a gate to keep cats apart during this stage. Pair the sight of the other cat with food or rewards. Reduce the distance or open the barrier further only when both cats stay relaxed. A gate keeps the cats apart but doesn’t replace supervision.

5. Try short, supervised meetings

Once barrier sessions stay calm, allow a brief meeting in the same room. Keep the setting quiet, give each cat room to move away, and reward calm behavior. International Cat Care advises having a person supervise each cat and being ready to step in gently and positively before a problem develops.

6. Step back when needed

If either cat growls, spits, hisses, swats or otherwise acts aggressively, separate them and return to an earlier stage. The ASPCA names these signs as reasons to separate cats and then reintroduce them gradually.

When conflict doesn’t settle

For severe or recurring fighting, keep the cats apart for longer and consult a qualified professional, such as a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist or a board-certified veterinary behaviorist. The ASPCA notes that some cats cannot live together peacefully. In those cases, long-term separation within the home or a different home may be kinder than chronic conflict. Coexistence is a realistic goal, and friendship isn’t guaranteed. The ASPCA also mentions pheromones as a possible aid for household cat aggression. No guidance reviewed here verifies that any specific product helps with introductions.

Supplies that have a clear job

  • Baby gate or pet gate: keeps cats physically apart while they see each other.
  • Separate litter box, food and water bowls: the new cat’s own essentials in its room.
  • Washable bedding or a blanket: carries familiar scent during the swap.

If the resident pet is a dog or another species

The sources reviewed give a detailed staged process only for cat-to-cat introductions. They don’t establish a full dog-to-cat protocol or one for other animals, so don’t assume the cat sequence alone makes a meeting safe. Keep the animals separated. If your pet has a history of chasing or predatory behavior, or you’re unsure how to read its body language, ask your veterinarian or a qualified behavior professional before any shared time. This is a cautious recommendation rather than a species-specific method from the cited organizations.

Which factors change your plan

Factor What to check
Resident species Cat-to-cat guidance is well established. For dogs and other animals, get professional input.
Comfort and aggression signals Calm, eating and relaxed cats can progress. Growling, hissing, spitting or swatting means go back a step.
Rooms and barriers You need a separate room for the newcomer and a secure gate or barrier for visual contact.
Supervision Meetings should only happen when you can watch and step in calmly.
Separate resources Each animal needs its own food, water, resting places and litter access.
