How Long Should Bearded Dragon Lights Stay On? A Safe Daily Schedule

Veterinary sources recommend different bearded dragon lighting durations. Here is how to choose a consistent daytime UVB schedule, provide nighttime darkness and verify the complete setup.

Run your bearded dragon’s UVB and daytime lights on a reliable daytime timer, then switch visible lights off for a genuinely dark night. There is no single universally accepted number of hours: North Carolina State University Veterinary Hospital advises about 12–14 hours in spring and summer and 8 hours in fall and winter; the University of California, Davis recommends about 14 hours of daylight and 10 hours of darkness; and PetMD recommends 10–12 hours of UVB each day. Choose a consistent window that fits one of these veterinary care approaches, and have an exotic-animal veterinarian confirm the setup for your dragon.

How many hours a day should a bearded dragon’s light be on?

Published veterinary guidance differs, so present the duration as a choice among established care recommendations rather than as a settled rule. The important pattern is daytime light and UVB followed by uninterrupted darkness overnight.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Veterinary source Daylight or UVB duration Night guidance and context
North Carolina State University Veterinary Hospital About 12–14 hours daily in spring and summer; about 8 hours in fall and winter Do not use white lights at night; darkness supports proper sleep
University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine (2019) About 14 hours of daylight About 10 hours of darkness; use a timer
PetMD 10–12 hours of UVB daily Follow the bulb manufacturer’s placement instructions; replacement is approximately every six months

These are care-sheet recommendations, not measurements from a named lighting study. They also describe duration, not a required clock time. A schedule such as 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. is an example of a 14-hour window, not a veterinary standard. Select start and stop times that work for your household, keep them consistent, and avoid changing them casually.

Should the UVB light be turned off at night?

Yes. Turn off UVB, white basking lamps and other bright visible lights at night so the enclosure is dark. NC State Veterinary Hospital states: “White lights should not be used at night as bearded dragons need darkness for proper sleep.” A red, blue or other colored bulb that visibly illuminates the enclosure is still a light source and does not provide the dark period described by that guidance.

If the room becomes too cold overnight, solve the temperature problem with a method approved for reptiles by your veterinarian rather than leaving a bright lamp on. A lighting timer should control the daytime cycle, while temperature equipment is evaluated separately.

What time should the lights turn on and off?

No cited veterinary source sets a universal “on at 7 a.m.” or “off at 9 p.m.” rule. The practical goal is a repeatable interval that provides the duration you selected and allows a full dark night. For example, a keeper following the UC Davis pattern could run lights for 14 hours and darkness for 10 hours; a keeper following the NC State seasonal pattern could use the longer spring/summer interval and a shorter fall/winter interval.

A plug-in reptile light timer is useful because it repeats the same on/off times when you are away. Set the timer after deciding which lamps it controls, check that its clock is correct, and verify the first several cycles in person. If your household schedule changes, move the entire window gradually or reset it once; do not leave one lamp on indefinitely while trying to reprogram another.

Do bearded dragons need less light in winter?

NC State Veterinary Hospital gives a seasonal recommendation: approximately 12–14 hours per day in spring and summer and 8 hours in fall and winter. UC Davis instead describes approximately 14 hours of daylight and 10 hours of darkness without a seasonal reduction, while PetMD describes 10–12 hours of UVB per day. Because these reputable sources differ, winter reduction is an option supported by one care guide, not a universal requirement.

Before shortening the photoperiod, ask your exotic-animal veterinarian whether seasonal adjustment is appropriate for your dragon’s age, health, appetite and housing. Whichever approach you choose, keep the selected winter window regular and restore the daytime schedule deliberately rather than changing it from day to day.

UVB, basking heat and visible light are different jobs

A schedule cannot make an unsuitable lamp safe. Bearded dragons require ultraviolet B (UVB); ordinary visible light or heat alone does not establish that UVB is being delivered. UC Davis notes that screw-in bulbs, including products marketed as “full spectrum,” provide heat but not UVB. NC State similarly explains that most UVB bulbs produce little heat and recommends a separate basking heat lamp.

Your daytime equipment may therefore include a UVB source, a basking heat lamp and ordinary visible illumination, each positioned according to its instructions. The timer can switch several daytime lamps together, but the heat output and UVB exposure must still be checked at the dragon’s actual basking location.

Position the UVB source according to the exact fixture and bulb instructions

UVB output depends on bulb type, reflector, age, distance, mesh and enclosure geometry. Do not infer effective exposure from the fact that a tube or bulb visibly shines.

  • Never place glass or plastic between the UVB source and the dragon. NC State Veterinary Hospital warns that UV rays cannot pass through those materials.
  • Use the manufacturer’s placement and distance instructions for the exact bulb and fixture. Do not transfer a distance from one model to another.
  • UC Davis describes a fluorescent bulb containing no less than 5% UVB and positioned no more than 12 inches from the basking site. Treat those figures as that source’s recommendation for the described equipment, not as a universal specification for every enclosure.
  • Ensure the dragon can move between the basking area and a less intense, cooler area. This lets it regulate exposure and body temperature instead of being trapped directly beneath the lamp.

Mesh tops, reflectors and mounting height can change the amount of UVB that reaches the animal. If you change any of them, recheck the arrangement against the new product instructions and ask your veterinarian whether the exposure is appropriate.

Keep basking and nighttime temperatures on their own monitoring plan

A timer controls operating hours; it does not prove that the enclosure is warm enough or that the basking surface is safe. Published temperature ranges also vary slightly:

Source Daytime enclosure Basking spot Night
NC State Veterinary Hospital 75–85°F (24–29°C) 88–100°F (31–38°C) About 70–75°F (21–24°C)
UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine 80–85°F 88–95°F 70–75°F

Use reliable digital thermometers to measure both the basking area and the cooler part of the enclosure, rather than judging temperature by the room or by touch. If readings fall outside the range your veterinarian recommends, correct the heat setup without extending the light period as a substitute.

Replace UVB bulbs before visible failure

UVB output can decline even while a bulb continues to emit visible light. NC State Veterinary Hospital recommends replacement every six months; UC Davis gives an interval of three to six months; PetMD says approximately six months. Follow the exact product instructions when they are more specific, record the installation date, and replace the bulb on schedule rather than waiting for it to burn out.

Replacing a bulb does not automatically make its previous mounting distance suitable for the new model. Recheck the new manufacturer’s distance, fixture compatibility and any mesh obstruction after installation. If your veterinarian uses a UVB meter or other assessment method, use that professional guidance to evaluate the enclosure.

How to set up a dependable lighting timer

  1. Choose the photoperiod. Select one of the published ranges—such as 10–12 hours of UVB, approximately 14 hours of daylight, or the NC State seasonal schedule—and discuss the choice with your veterinarian.
  2. Choose clock times. Set a daytime window that matches your household routine and leaves the remaining hours dark. The clock time itself is not a veterinary prescription.
  3. Identify each device. Plug only the lamps and fixtures approved for that timer’s electrical rating into it. Keep heat equipment on the control arrangement recommended for the fixture and your veterinarian’s plan.
  4. Program repeating events. Enter the same on and off time for each day, or enter the seasonal schedule you deliberately chose. Confirm the timer’s clock and daylight-saving setting if applicable.
  5. Test the cycle. Observe a complete switch-on and switch-off, making sure every intended lamp changes state and no bright lamp remains on overnight.
  6. Mark maintenance dates. Write the UVB installation date and the planned replacement date on the enclosure record. Check thermometers and fixture positioning whenever you service the lights.

Common problems and how to correct them

The light is on, but the dragon may not be receiving UVB

A visibly bright bulb may be the wrong type, too old, too far away or blocked by glass or plastic. Confirm that the product is actually a UVB source, compare its placement with the manufacturer’s instructions, remove transparent barriers, and replace it within the stated service interval.

The enclosure is dark at night, but temperatures are low

Do not extend the daytime schedule or leave a white lamp on overnight simply to add warmth. Measure the nighttime temperature, review the heat method with an exotic-animal veterinarian and use equipment that does not defeat the required dark period.

The timer produces an irregular schedule

Check the timer’s clock, repeating-day setting, power connection and load rating. Test each lamp independently, then observe the enclosure at both transition times. A manual switch left in the wrong position can override some timers.

The dragon avoids the basking area

Measure the basking and cool zones rather than assuming the lamp is correctly placed. Verify that the basking temperature is within the range recommended for your dragon, that the animal can retreat from the beam, and that no enclosure decoration blocks access.

You are unsure which seasonal plan to use

Bring the enclosure dimensions, bulb model, fixture, mounting distance, temperature readings and current timer settings to your veterinarian. The published sources do not agree on one seasonal schedule, so individualized advice is more reliable than averaging their numbers.

Practical checklist for a bearded dragon lighting schedule

  • UVB is supplied by a lamp designed to emit UVB, not merely heat or visible light.
  • Daytime UVB and visible lights run on a repeating timer for the chosen duration.
  • All bright lights are off overnight, providing a dark sleeping period.
  • No glass or plastic sits between the UVB source and the dragon.
  • Bulb distance and fixture use match the current manufacturer instructions.
  • A separate basking heat source is provided when the UVB lamp does not supply adequate heat.
  • Digital thermometers measure the basking and cooler zones, with nighttime readings checked separately.
  • The UVB installation date and replacement deadline are recorded.
  • Any seasonal change is intentional and has been discussed with an exotic-animal veterinarian.

The safest interpretation of the available guidance is therefore a consistent daytime cycle, complete darkness at night, and a UVB installation whose type, distance, age and temperature environment have been verified—not a timer setting considered in isolation.
