There is no established daily number of minutes that suits every cat. Offer regular opportunities for interactive play, then adjust to your cat’s interest, energy and life stage. Make the toy behave like prey, and let your cat catch it sometimes.
Why there isn’t one right number
Cats need opportunities to play and express predatory behaviors, but their play habits vary. Kittens commonly have strong play drives; play may be more subdued in senior cats, and individual cats differ too. FelineVMA identifies play and predatory behavior as part of meeting indoor cats’ needs, but does not set a universal daily play-time target. FelineVMA’s environmental guidance recommends multiple 5–10-minute sessions for training—not for play—so that figure should not be treated as a play prescription.

How to tell when a session is working
Follow your cat’s engagement rather than a timer. Use a wand or another interactive toy that imitates prey, encouraging your cat to watch, chase and pounce. Let the cat capture the toy at least occasionally; FelineVMA’s play guidance recommends capture opportunities to help avoid frustration.

If your cat loses interest, ends the interaction or seems reluctant, stop rather than forcing more activity. A senior cat may play in a more subdued way, but the available guidance does not prescribe a separate duration or exercise plan for older cats.

Keep play safe
- Use a fishing-pole-style toy or another toy as the target instead of hands or feet. The Feline Behavior Guidelines recommend interactive toys and adult supervision when children play with cats.
- Keep children supervised during play, and redirect any hand- or foot-chasing to a toy.
- Choose a toy that lets you move it like prey while keeping it at a safe distance from your hands.
Add enrichment between play sessions

These activities supplement opportunities for caregiver-led interactive play; they are not established as a replacement for it.
When to get advice
