Cats need regular chances to play, stalk, chase, pounce, and forage—not a prescribed daily number of exercise minutes. These activities let them express natural hunting behavior and add variety to their environment. For indoor cats in particular, play works best as part of a broader plan that includes food puzzles, safe places to climb and perch, and access to essential resources. Choose activities for your cat’s preferences and abilities, keep play safe, and ask a veterinarian about weight, pain, or mobility concerns.
1. Play gives cats an outlet for hunting behavior
Even when a cat’s food arrives in a bowl, opportunities to stalk, chase, and pounce can meet important behavioral needs. The FelineVMA caregiver guide puts it plainly: “Play and predatory behaviors allow cats to fulfill their natural need to hunt.” Interactive toys can imitate prey movement and make play physically and mentally engaging.

Move a toy mouse along the floor or sweep a wand toy so its lure behaves like something the cat might pursue. Let the cat catch the simulated prey from time to time. A play session that only keeps the toy out of reach may frustrate rather than satisfy that hunting sequence.
2. Indoor cats need enrichment beyond a place to live
Food, water, and shelter are essential, but they do not provide all the experiences cats need. The 2024 FelineVMA statement on indoor-only cats includes simulated hunting and foraging, play, safe territory with vertical space, and access to key resources. A home can support activity through a mix of interactive play, places to climb or perch, and opportunities to work for some food.

Add foraging and vertical options
Food puzzles and dispensing balls can encourage a cat to seek out or manipulate food instead of eating every meal from a bowl. They are optional enrichment, not a guaranteed way to reduce weight. Keep them compatible with the cat’s feeding plan, and introduce them at a difficulty the cat can manage.
A cat tree, shelf, or sturdy raised perch can add useful vertical space, alongside safe resting places. Cats differ in how they use their surroundings and in how much social interaction they want, so observe what your cat chooses rather than assuming one setup suits every cat.
Outdoor stimulation does not require free roaming
A cat does not have to roam freely outdoors to get stimulation. The 2024 FelineVMA statement describes controlled options such as enclosures, cat-safe fences, and harness-and-leash walks. Whether any option is suitable depends on the individual cat and the space available.

3. Match play to the cat, not a fixed exercise target
The sources do not establish a universal daily exercise-duration target. Offer regular opportunities for activity, then adapt the type and pace to the cat’s interest, life stage, mobility, and health. Some cats may enjoy a wand toy; others may prefer chasing a ball or investigating a food puzzle. Rotate toys to help maintain interest, and give cats in a multi-cat household individual play opportunities.
Avoid using hands or feet as toys. The FelineVMA life-stage guidance flags this as a way to reduce the risk of encouraging rough play. For older cats, pay attention to changes in mobility and discuss their activity and environment at veterinary visits.

Check toys and the play area before inviting a chase. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine cautions against toys with small or strand-like parts that could come loose and be swallowed. Wand toys and similar items need supervision, especially if they have feathers, strings, or other detachable parts.

- Inspect toys for loose pieces, chewable cords, and parts small enough to swallow.
- Consider fall and impact hazards around the play area, including unstable furniture or hard obstacles in a running path.
- Put away toys that could become hazardous when a cat chews or plays without supervision.
- Rotate safe toys to refresh interest; simple options such as a cardboard box or ping-pong ball may suit some cats.
- If you are unsure whether a toy or activity is safe for your cat, ask your veterinarian.
5. Treat activity as one part of the health plan
Regular opportunities to move can contribute to a cat’s overall wellbeing, but exercise is not a stand-alone treatment for obesity or other health problems. Cornell notes that obesity can limit normal physical activity and compromise quality of life, and lists physical inactivity and obesity among risk factors for diabetes. Food puzzles may add foraging, but they do not replace an appropriate feeding plan or veterinary advice.

If you are concerned about your cat’s weight, pain, reduced mobility, or how much activity is safe, ask a veterinarian for guidance tailored to that cat. This is especially important when an older cat’s movement or willingness to play changes.
