The best-supported published measurement for a Mojave rattlesnake is 1,236 millimeters (123.6 centimeters, about 4 feet 0.7 inches), excluding the rattle. The specimen was an adult male captured near Eloy in Pinal County, Arizona, on September 16, 2014. Mrinalini, James J. Hicks and Wolfgang Wüster described it in a 2015 Herpetological Review note as “the longest C. scutulatus that has been accurately measured and reported.” That wording matters: it identifies the strongest documented record, not proof that no larger Mojave rattlesnake has ever lived.
The largest Mojave rattlesnake ever recorded: the number
The record-length animal measured 1,236 mm without its rattle. Converted to more familiar units, that is 123.6 cm, or approximately 4 ft 0.7 in. The measurement came from a live adult male collected in Eloy, Pinal County, Arizona, at 32.780383°N, 111.613144°W (WGS84).

The authors reported the result in “Crotalus scutulatus (Mohave Rattlesnake). Maximum Size,” published in volume 46, issue 2 of Herpetological Review in 2015. Their exact conclusion was: “Our specimen, with a total length of 1236 mm is consequently the longest C. scutulatus that has been accurately measured and reported.” The specimen subsequently entered the live collection of the Chiricahua Desert Museum in Rodeo, New Mexico.
“Mojave” and “Mohave” are both used in common names for Crotalus scutulatus. “Mojave green” is a nickname referring to a color form; color alone is not enough to establish a snake’s identity.

What the 1,236 mm measurement includes—and leaves out
The reported total is the length of the snake’s body and tail, not the rattle. The researchers separated the measurement into two components:
| Component | Reported mean | Standard deviation | What it represents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Snout–vent length (SVL) | 1,136.7 mm | 5.7 mm | From the tip of the snout to the vent |
| Tail length | 90.3 mm | 2.4 mm | From the vent to the base of the rattle |
| Total body length | 1,236 mm | Not separately stated | SVL plus tail; rattle excluded |
These are means from three measurements, rather than a single pass with a tape. Adding the reported mean SVL and mean tail length produces the published 1,236 mm total. Because the rattle was excluded, a snake measured from nose to the end of the rattle would produce a different figure. Record claims are only comparable when they specify the same convention.
How the researchers measured the snake
Measuring a long, powerful rattlesnake is not as simple as laying a ruler beside a photograph. For this specimen, the anterior portion of the body was placed inside a clear plastic tube. The posterior portion was straightened by hand along a measuring tape. The team repeated the procedure three times.
- Constrain the front portion safely: the snake’s anterior body was held inside a transparent tube, limiting bends while avoiding a claim based on a stretched skin or a forced photographic perspective.
- Straighten the rear portion: the remaining body and tail were aligned by hand along a measuring tape.
- Repeat the measurement: three readings were taken so that variation between measurements could be assessed.
- Separate the anatomical sections: the researchers calculated mean SVL and mean tail length, then summed them for total length without the rattle.
The reported standard deviations—5.7 mm for SVL and 2.4 mm for tail length—show the small spread among the repeated readings. They do not turn the result into a universal maximum for the species; they describe repeatability for this particular specimen and method.

When and where was the longest accurately measured Mojave rattlesnake found?
The male was captured on September 16, 2014, near Eloy in Pinal County, Arizona. Eloy lies in the Sonoran Desert region of central Arizona, but the record claim concerns the individual animal and its documentation, not a conclusion that snakes from that locality are generally larger.
The published location is precise enough to identify the county and coordinates, yet the record does not establish a population-wide size pattern. A single large male cannot be used to calculate an average for the species or to predict the size of snakes in a particular area.
Why do some sources list longer Mojave rattlesnakes?
Historical literature contains several figures above 1,200 mm. The 2015 note examined those claims and explained why the authors did not accept them as authenticated records. Their discussion is a history of the published claims, not a newly conducted archival audit of every underlying document.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Claim or figure | How the 2015 note treated it | Why it is not equivalent to the 1,236 mm report |
|---|---|---|
| 1,135 mm | Maximum verified total length known before the newly reported specimen | It was surpassed by the triply measured 2014 male |
| 1,231 mm male attributed to Klauber | Unconfirmed because the datasheet could not be located | The traceable measurement record was missing |
| 1,373 mm male from Brewster County, Texas, reported initially by Tennant | Later questioned because of possible misidentification | A very large number is not persuasive if the species identification is uncertain |
| 1,321 mm maximum cited by Lowe and colleagues | Source could not be traced; the cited author suspected a digit-switching error | The origin and accuracy of the number were unclear |
The note states that earlier reports above 1,200 mm had not been authenticated. That does not prove the snakes were impossible or that every historical observer was mistaken. It means the available documentation did not meet the same evidentiary standard as the 2014 specimen.

What “longest accurately measured and reported” really means
A record claim has two parts: the animal may have been large, and the evidence must demonstrate how large it was. The 1,236 mm figure is strong because the paper identifies the specimen, gives its capture details, explains the measurement procedure, reports repeated readings and states exactly what the total includes.
It is more cautious than saying “the largest Mojave rattlesnake ever.” A larger snake could have existed without being measured, or a historical measurement could have been lost. The defensible statement is that 1,236 mm is the longest accurately measured and reported Crotalus scutulatus in the cited literature.
When comparing another claimed record, check these five questions:
- Was the animal measured repeatedly, or was there only one reading?
- Does the total include the rattle, and does the competing number use the same convention?
- Was the snake identified confidently as C. scutulatus?
- Is there a specimen, datasheet or other traceable documentation?
- Is the number a primary measured report or a later repetition of an earlier claim?
How large is that compared with an ordinary Mojave rattlesnake?
The National Park Service’s Grand Canyon-Parashant species page gives an average length of two to four feet for Mojave rattlesnakes in that regional setting. That is useful scale context, not a universal average for every population and not a remeasurement of the record male.

The 2015 report also says specimens exceeding 1,000 mm are uncommon. At 1,236 mm, the documented male is therefore notably longer than the two-to-four-foot regional range cited by the National Park Service. The comparison involves different scopes: one source gives a regional generalization, while the other documents an exceptional individual.
Length also varies with sex, age, health, season and population. The available record establishes the size of one adult male; it does not supply a growth curve or a species-wide upper-limit formula.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why photographs and skins cannot certify a giant snake
Extraordinary length claims often circulate with a photograph or a preserved skin. A 2018 bulletin from the Southwestern Center for Herpetological Research cautions that forced perspective can make a snake appear longer in a photograph. A snake held close to the camera may look disproportionately large compared with a person or landscape behind it.
Preserved skins present a different problem: they can be stretched. A stretched skin may exceed the animal’s living length, so it is weak evidence for a record unless the preparation history and original measurement are documented. Neither a dramatic image nor an untraceable skin measurement matches a repeated measurement of an identified specimen.

For readers evaluating a new claim, a photograph can be an observation worth investigating, but it is not by itself a calibrated measurement. Look for a scale, a stated method, repeat readings and documentation that can be checked.
Identifying the species and staying safe
Crotalus scutulatus is the species commonly called the Mojave or Mohave rattlesnake. Its appearance can vary, and the nickname “Mojave green” should not be treated as a taxonomic diagnosis. A record-length claim still requires reliable species identification, not just a greenish color or a familiar-looking pattern.
If you encounter a Mojave rattlesnake on a trail, the National Park Service advice is simple: give it a wide berth. Do not approach, corner, touch, move or attempt to measure a wild rattlesnake. A snake’s size does not make handling safe, and a close approach can create risk for both people and the animal. Observe from a distance and allow it a route away from you.

The 2015 authors called it the longest Crotalus scutulatus accurately measured and reported; that is a documented record, not a guarantee that no larger individual ever existed.
