There is no single number of bones that applies to every fish. The total depends on the species, whether it has a bony or cartilaginous skeleton, and which skeletal parts someone counts. A typical bony fish has a skull, jaws, vertebrae, ribs, fin-support bones, fin rays, and numerous smaller elements—but a scientifically reliable “average fish bone count” does not exist.

Why fish do not have one standard bone count
“Fish” describes an extremely diverse group of animals, not one uniform body plan. A bone count might include only the major bones, or it might also include tiny bones in the head, fin supports, teeth, gill-associated elements, and delicate bones embedded in the muscles.
The number can also change depending on how structures are defined. Some elements are fused, segmented, partly mineralized, or present in one species but absent in another. Developmental stage matters too: a young fish may have skeletal structures that have not yet fully ossified, while adult fish can show different degrees of fusion.

For that reason, claims that every fish has “150 to 300 bones” should be treated as rough, informal estimates—not as a universal scientific fact.
Bony fish and cartilaginous fish are different
Bony fish
Most familiar fish—including goldfish, guppies, zebrafish, salmon, trout, tuna, and bass—are bony fish, members of the group Osteichthyes. Their internal skeletons contain true bone.
A bony fish skeleton commonly includes:
- a skull and upper and lower jaws;
- a vertebral column, or backbone;
- ribs that help protect the body cavity;
- shoulder and pelvic girdle elements;
- bones supporting the dorsal, anal, pectoral, and pelvic fins;
- fin rays and spines;
- small bones around the gills, eyes, and head; and
- delicate intramuscular bones in some species.
Fish skulls can be particularly complex. A zebrafish skull, for example, contains substantially more separate bones than an adult mammalian skull, and its vertebral column and fin rays develop through several distinct ossification patterns [c004][c005]. That makes a direct comparison with the commonly cited human total of 206 bones misleading.

Sharks, rays, skates, and chimaeras are cartilaginous fish. Their skeletons are made primarily of cartilage rather than the conventional bony skeleton found in salmon or goldfish. NOAA describes sharks as having no bones in the ordinary sense; calcium salts can strengthen parts of their cartilage, especially the jaws, making them look bone-like after drying [c001][c006]. Chimaeras also have cartilage skeletons [c007].

So, in a simple classroom answer, it is reasonable to say that a shark has “zero bones.” The more precise scientific wording is that sharks and their relatives have a cartilaginous skeleton, not a conventional skeleton made of true bone.
Vertebrae are only one part of the skeleton
People sometimes answer this question by giving the number of vertebrae. That is useful for comparing fish species, but vertebrae are not the same as total bones.
| Fish or group | Representative count | What the number means |
|---|---|---|
| Zebrafish | About 31 vertebrae | A modal vertebral count, not a whole-skeleton total [c009] |
| Medaka | 30–31 vertebrae | A species-level vertebral range [c002] |
| Arctic charr | 58–64 vertebrae | A species-level vertebral range [c002] |
| Salmonids | Often about 50–60 vertebrae | A broad comparative estimate; individual species and populations vary [c010] |
| Chinook salmon | 67–75 vertebrae | A reported range for that fish, not all salmon [c003] |
| Northern pikeminnow | 44–46 vertebrae | A reported species range [c003] |
| Stickleback | 29–33 vertebrae | A reported species range [c003] |
These examples show why a single fish-wide number cannot be accurate. Even vertebral counts—the relatively easy part of a skeleton to compare—can differ considerably between species and sometimes between populations of the same species.
What about sturgeon?
Sturgeon are an especially useful reminder that fish skeletons do not all follow the same pattern. They have conspicuous external bony scutes or plates, but comparative-anatomy and fish-bone references describe sturgeon as lacking a bony vertebral spine [c003][c008]. Their backbone is supported by a different arrangement than the familiar bony vertebral column of many other fish.

It is not only an introductory teacher for preschool children to recognize the structure of the body, but also a powerful assistant for medical students to understand anatomy.
This does not mean that sturgeon have no hard skeletal structures. It means that “number of bones” is a poor way to summarize their anatomy without specifying exactly which structures are being counted.
How many bones are in a fish fillet?
A fillet can contain bones even after the head, backbone, ribs, and fins have been removed. The small bones most commonly found in the flesh are called pin bones. They are delicate intramuscular bones that remain embedded along the fillet’s center line in many fish.
Pin-bone numbers vary by species and by individual fish. In one food-science study, the experimental samples contained 29 pin bones in a salmon fillet and 31 in a trout fillet [c011]. Those figures describe the study’s samples; they are not universal counts for every salmon or trout.

For a boneless-looking fillet, run clean fingers gently along the flesh to find raised or sharp spots. Remove any remaining pin bones with clean fish-bone tweezers or a fish-bone puller. University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources guidance recommends those tools for checking and removing pin bones [c014].

Northern pike provide another species-specific example. Their fillets contain characteristic “Y bones,” and the North Dakota Game and Fish Department describes a method for cutting them out [c012]. These are not an indication that pike have an unusual universal total; they are simply a distinctive feature of that species’ anatomy.
What should you tell a child?
A clear elementary-school explanation is:
“Fish do not all have the same number of bones. Most fish we see have a backbone, skull, jaws, ribs, and bones that support their fins. Sharks and rays are different because their skeletons are made mostly of cartilage.”
For a more technical answer, say that the total number of skeletal elements varies among fish because elements differ in their presence, segmentation, fusion, mineralization, and counting conventions. Vertebral counts alone vary widely, while cartilaginous fish have mineralized cartilage rather than a conventional bony endoskeleton.

Common mistakes when answering the question
- Giving one number for every fish: no universal total has been established.
- Confusing vertebrae with total bones: a fish with 31 vertebrae also has a skull, jaws, ribs, fin supports, rays, and other skeletal elements.
- Saying every fish has bones: sharks, rays, skates, and chimaeras have primarily cartilaginous skeletons.
- Calling pin bones the whole skeleton: pin bones are only a small subset of the bones in some fish.
- Comparing fish directly with humans: fish skulls, fins, rays, and vertebral columns are organized differently from the human skeleton.
- Assuming every member of a species is identical: vertebral counts can vary within species and populations, and skeletal appearance changes during development.
Bottom line
The best answer to “How many bones does a fish have?” is: it depends on the fish and on how the bones are counted. Most familiar fish are bony animals with many separate skeletal elements, but their totals are species-specific rather than fixed. Sharks and their relatives are the major exception people should remember: they have skeletons made primarily of cartilage instead of true bone.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do all fish have bones?
No. Most familiar fish are bony fish, but sharks, rays, skates, and chimaeras have skeletons made primarily of cartilage rather than true bone.
Is the number of vertebrae the same as the total number of bones?
No. Vertebrae are only one category of skeletal element. A fish also has a skull, jaws, ribs, fin supports, fin rays, and other bones or cartilage structures.
What are pin bones in a fish fillet?
Pin bones are small bones embedded in the flesh of many fish fillets. They can remain after the backbone, ribs, head, and fins have been removed.
