A Pomapoo is a Pomeranian–Toy Poodle mix—a small, intelligent companion that may be affectionate, trainable, lively, vocal, and surprisingly demanding to groom. Typical Pomapoos weigh about 5–15 pounds and stand roughly 8–10 inches at the shoulder, but those figures are estimates rather than a breed standard. Because this is a mixed-breed cross, no individual Pomapoo is guaranteed to have a particular size, coat, shedding level, temperament, or adult appearance.
Pomapoos can suit apartments or houses, provided they receive daily interaction, positive training, safe exercise, dental care, and consistent coat maintenance. They are not automatically hypoallergenic, non-shedding, quiet, or easy-care.

What is a Pomapoo?
“Pomapoo” is the commonly used name for a cross between a Pomeranian and a Toy Poodle. The Pomeranian and Toy Poodle are established breeds, but the Pomapoo itself does not have one universally accepted conformation, temperament, or coat standard.
This distinction is more than a technicality. The American Kennel Club explains that mixed-breed dogs do not have an official breed standard and cannot compete in AKC conformation, where dogs are judged against a defined breed ideal. Mixed-breed dogs may still participate in many activities through AKC Canine Partners, including agility, obedience, rally, tracking, and scent work. A Pomapoo’s eligibility and registration options may vary by program and location.
Consequently, descriptions such as “Pomapoos are always friendly” or “Pomapoos do not shed” are too broad. It is more accurate to say that many Pomapoos show certain tendencies, while inherited traits, early experiences, training, health, and daily management shape the individual dog.
Size and appearance
Published Pomapoo guides commonly estimate an adult height of about 8–10 inches at the shoulder and a weight of approximately 5–15 pounds. These numbers are useful for planning, but they are not formal limits. The size of the parents, their genetics, sex, nutrition, and the individual puppy’s development all matter.
A Pomapoo may have the Pomeranian’s compact, spitz-like outline, triangular ears, fuller coat, and plumed tail, or the Toy Poodle’s finer, wavier, or curly hair. Some dogs look distinctly like one parent, while others are an obvious blend. Coat texture may be:
- Straight and fluffy;
- Soft and wavy;
- Curly or frizzy;
- Dense and plush; or
- An intermediate texture that changes as the puppy matures.
Possible colors include black, brown, red, cream, fawn, sable, brindle, white, and combinations of these. The name “Pomapoo” cannot reliably predict a puppy’s final color, coat texture, or markings. Puppy coats can also change as the adult coat develops. Meeting both parents and seeing previous litters may provide useful clues, but neither guarantees the adult result.
Pomapoo temperament and personality
Pomapoos are often described as affectionate, curious, intelligent, friendly, and strongly interested in their people. The Toy Poodle parent may contribute trainability and mental agility. The Pomeranian parent may contribute alertness, confidence, a watchful nature, and a tendency to announce unfamiliar sounds or visitors.

An individual Pomapoo may be outgoing, reserved, excitable, independent, sensitive, stubborn, or highly vocal. Genetics are part of the picture, but socialization, reinforcement history, handling, exercise, and the dog’s health also influence behavior.
Are Pomapoos good family dogs?
Some Pomapoos live very happily with children, dogs, and cats. Their small size, however, creates safety concerns that are easy to underestimate. A fall from a sofa, rough handling, a door closing on a paw, or a larger dog playing too forcefully can cause serious injury.

Young children should always be supervised with a Pomapoo and taught not to carry, chase, squeeze, or disturb the dog while it is eating or resting. Interactions with larger dogs and smaller household animals should also be monitored. A puppy’s early behavior around children and other animals is informative, but it is not a guarantee of adult temperament.
Do Pomapoos have separation anxiety?
Many Pomapoos prefer close human contact and may be at risk of separation-related distress if they are routinely left alone for long periods. This is a risk, not a diagnosis. Warning signs can include persistent barking or vocalizing, destructive behavior, escape attempts, house-soiling only when alone, or intense distress during departures.
Build alone time gradually from puppyhood. Use calm departures, food-based enrichment, a safe resting area, and short absences that remain below the dog’s distress threshold. Owners who work long hours may need a dog walker, sitter, daycare, or other practical support. If separation behavior is severe, consult a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional rather than simply increasing the time the dog is left alone.
Exercise and mental stimulation
A Pomapoo is small, but small does not mean sedentary. A practical starting point for many healthy adult dogs is roughly 30–45 minutes of active outdoor exercise each day, divided into walks and supplemented by indoor play. The appropriate amount depends on age, fitness, body condition, weather, orthopedic health, and veterinary advice.
Useful activities include:
- Short, varied walks that allow safe sniffing;
- Gentle indoor games;
- Trick training and obedience games;
- Beginner scent activities;
- Food puzzles and supervised interactive toys; and
- Low-impact activities suited to the individual dog.
A small-dog puzzle feeder can provide an outlet for problem-solving and make part of a meal more engaging. It is enrichment, not a cure for anxiety or a replacement for human interaction. Choose a design that is appropriately sized, supervise its first uses, and stop if the dog becomes frustrated or tries to chew and swallow pieces.
Adjust exercise for puppies, seniors, hot or cold weather, and dogs with pain or breathing problems. Avoid repetitive high jumping and strenuous activity while a puppy is still growing. Never leave a small dog in a parked car or assume that a coat or cooling accessory makes unsafe weather safe.

Training and socialization
Pomapoos may learn quickly, but intelligence does not eliminate the need for patient teaching. Repetitive or overly long sessions can cause a dog to disengage. Use short sessions, clear cues, food rewards, play, and frequent opportunities to succeed. Reward-based training is preferable to intimidation, physical corrections, or punishment, which can increase fear and damage trust.
Socialization checklist
Introduce new experiences gradually and positively, while avoiding overwhelming the puppy. Useful early exposures include:
- Household sounds, visitors, travel, and different floor surfaces;
- Gentle handling of paws, ears, mouth, tail, and body;
- Brushes, combs, clippers, dryers, nail tools, and grooming tables;
- Calm, stable dogs and appropriate people;
- Collars, harnesses, car safety, and veterinary procedures; and
- Being briefly separated from the owner and settling independently.
Grooming desensitization deserves special attention because a Pomapoo may need brushing, bathing, drying, nail care, ear care, and clipping throughout life. Pair each tool and handling step with rewards, and stop before the puppy becomes frightened.

House-training
House-training can take patience in a very small dog. Use a predictable schedule, frequent bathroom opportunities, close supervision, immediate rewards outdoors, and an enzymatic cleaner for accidents. Indoor pads or litter-style systems are optional management tools—not requirements—and should be chosen according to the household’s goals and veterinary guidance. Do not punish accidents after the fact; the dog will not connect delayed punishment with the earlier behavior.

Grooming is one of the biggest practical considerations before getting a Pomapoo. The coat may be relatively light-shedding, or it may shed more like a Pomeranian’s coat. It may also mat readily, particularly when it is long, wavy, curly, or dense.
A Poodle cross should never automatically be called hypoallergenic. The AKC notes that no purebred, mixed-breed, or designer dog is completely hypoallergenic. Allergens are associated with proteins in dander, saliva, and other materials—not simply with visible hair. Anyone with allergies should spend time with the specific dog and discuss management with a medical professional before committing.
A workable Pomapoo grooming routine
- Brush frequently. All dogs should be brushed at least weekly, according to VCA guidance, while longer or more easily tangled coats generally need more frequent care.
- Reach the skin. Work in sections rather than brushing only the surface. A line-brushing approach can help reveal hidden tangles.
- Check with a comb. A comb should pass from the skin outward through the coat. Pay special attention to behind the ears, under the legs, the chest, belly, tail, and areas beneath a collar or harness.
- Keep nails and ears on the schedule. Inspect ears and paws regularly, trim nails as needed, and keep paw hair manageable.
- Dry thoroughly. After bathing, dry the coat carefully and continue checking for tangles.
- Use professional help when needed. Clipping frequency depends on coat growth, density, length, matting, and the trim you choose.
A dog slicker brush can help work through loose hair and small tangles, but it is not a substitute for brushing all the way to the skin. A stainless-steel dog comb is useful for finishing the coat and finding knots that a brush has skimmed over.
Never bathe a heavily matted dog in the hope that the mats will loosen; water can tighten them. Severe mats can be painful and may require clipping by a professional groomer or veterinary team. If brushing causes repeated pain, skin irritation, or panic, stop and obtain professional guidance. A Pomapoo is not necessarily a wash-and-wear dog.

A Pomapoo can inherit health risks from either parent. Conditions discussed in Pomapoo-specific guidance include patellar luxation, epilepsy, eye problems, and tracheal collapse. These are possible concerns, not inevitable diagnoses or a complete list of every condition an individual dog might develop.
Patellar luxation
Patellar luxation occurs when the kneecap moves out of its normal groove. Merck Veterinary Manual notes that small and miniature dogs are commonly affected. A dog may intermittently “skip,” carry a hind leg for a few steps, or show persistent lameness. Severity ranges from mild luxation detected during examination to persistent displacement that may require surgical consideration.
Arrange a veterinary examination for repeated skipping, limping, reluctance to climb or jump, or sudden changes in movement. Do not attempt to force the knee back into position or diagnose the cause from a video alone.
Parent health testing
For the Toy Poodle parent, the Poodle Club of America’s health statement dated December 11, 2024, recommends:

- A PRCD/PRA DNA test from an approved laboratory;
- An annual ACVO eye examination beginning at a minimum age of one year; and
- A veterinary patellar-luxation evaluation beginning at a minimum age of one year.
The same organization identifies additional Poodle concerns, including eye disorders, epilepsy, Addison’s disease, and von Willebrand disease, among others. Their relevance depends on the specific parent lines and the dog’s genetics. A buyer should ask for verifiable records for both parents—not just a statement that a puppy is “vet checked.”
Dental care
Dental care deserves priority in a Pomapoo. Merck reports that small-breed dogs generally have more periodontal problems than large-breed dogs. Begin handling the mouth gently and aim for daily toothbrushing if the dog will tolerate it, alongside veterinary dental examinations and veterinarian-approved dental products.
A small-dog toothbrush and enzymatic dog toothpaste can support a daily routine. Use products made for dogs and never human toothpaste, which may contain ingredients unsafe for them. Dental products do not replace professional evaluation when there is severe odor, oral pain, loose teeth, bleeding, difficulty eating, or other concerning signs.
When to call a veterinarian
Seek veterinary attention for coughing, breathing difficulty, fainting, repeated seizures, persistent lameness, eye pain or vision changes, severe dental odor or mouth pain, inability to eat, or sudden behavior changes. Breathing difficulty, collapse, and other acute severe symptoms warrant urgent or emergency care.
Feeding and healthy body condition
Small dogs can gain excess weight quickly because treats and table food represent a large share of their daily calories. Feed according to the dog’s age, life stage, activity, body condition, health status, and the food’s caloric density. A veterinarian can help calculate an appropriate starting amount and adjust it over time.
A small-breed formula may offer conveniently sized kibble, but no single commercial diet is universally best. Measure meals, count treats, and reassess portions when activity or health changes. Look at body condition as well as the scale: a healthy Pomapoo should have a visible waist and ribs that are easily felt without a thick layer of fat. Puppies, seniors, dogs with dental disease, and dogs with medical conditions may need individualized feeding plans.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Home suitability and safety
Pomapoos can adapt well to apartment living or a house. What matters most is daily interaction, training, exercise, enrichment, and safe indoor living—not the size of the home. They should not be treated as outdoor-only dogs.
Plan for small-dog hazards:
- Block unsafe stairs and prevent falls from furniture;
- Secure doors, gates, balconies, and yard access;
- Supervise play with larger dogs;
- Teach children safe handling and give the dog a retreat;
- Use secure travel arrangements rather than carrying the dog loose in a vehicle; and
- Protect the dog from both cold exposure and rapid overheating.
A small-dog harness may be more comfortable for some dogs than attaching a leash to a collar, but fit matters. Introduce it gradually, check for rubbing or escape gaps, and follow veterinary or qualified trainer advice if the dog coughs, pulls intensely, or resists equipment.

Since there is no universally enforced Pomapoo standard, assess the breeder and the actual parent dogs rather than relying on labels such as “teacup,” “rare color,” “hypoallergenic,” or “guaranteed personality.” A responsible breeder should discuss variation honestly instead of promising a particular adult size, coat, shedding level, or temperament.

Ask these questions before placing a deposit:
- Can you provide the registered names and verifiable health results of both parents?
- For the Toy Poodle parent, are PRCD/PRA DNA, current ACVO eye, and patellar evaluations documented?
- Can you meet the mother and observe her temperament, living conditions, and interaction with the puppies?
- How are puppies introduced to handling, household life, grooming tools, travel, and age-appropriate social experiences?
- What veterinary records, vaccination information, contract, return policy, and post-placement support are provided?
- Does the breeder explain realistic variation in size, coat, behavior, and health?
Be cautious if a seller will not show where the puppies are raised, will not provide parent information, pressures you to pay quickly, or uses extreme size and color claims as the main selling point. Health paperwork should be independently verifiable where possible.
Adoption and rescue
Rescue and adoption are legitimate alternatives to purchasing from a breeder. An adult Pomapoo or Pomapoo-type rescue may make its size, coat, energy level, and day-to-day temperament easier to assess. Puppies adopted through rescue may offer less certainty about adult appearance and behavior, but a reputable organization should still share available medical and behavioral information and help match the dog to the household.
Is a Pomapoo right for you?
A Pomapoo may be a good match if you want a small companion, enjoy brief positive training sessions, can provide daily interaction, and are prepared to brush and maintain a variable coat. It may be a poor match if you need a reliably quiet, completely non-shedding, low-maintenance dog or if the dog would routinely be alone for most of the day without support.
Before deciding, budget not only for food and routine veterinary care but also for grooming, dental supplies, training, parasite prevention, emergency care, and possible professional support. The mix’s small size can make it convenient to house, but it does not remove its exercise, social, grooming, or health needs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Pomapoo a recognized dog breed?
No. A Pomapoo is a mixed-breed cross, not a standardized breed with a universally accepted conformation or temperament standard. It may participate in many AKC Canine Partners activities, but it cannot compete in AKC conformation.
Are Pomapoos good with children and other pets?
Many Pomapoos are affectionate and trainable, but personality varies. Early socialization, training, supervision, and the individual dog’s temperament are especially important because Pomapoos are small and can be injured by rough handling or larger dogs.
Do Pomapoos shed, and are they hypoallergenic?
Not necessarily. Some Pomapoos shed lightly, while others inherit more of the Pomeranian’s shedding coat. No dog is completely hypoallergenic, including mixed breeds and designer crosses.
How much grooming does a Pomapoo need?
They generally need frequent brushing, combing, nail care, ear checks, and regular professional grooming depending on coat length and density. Wavy, curly, or dense coats can mat close to the skin.
How much exercise does a Pomapoo need?
A practical starting point for many healthy adults is about 30–45 minutes of active outdoor exercise daily, plus indoor play and mental stimulation. Puppies, seniors, and dogs with health problems need individualized activity plans.
What health problems can Pomapoos have?
Possible concerns include patellar luxation, eye problems, epilepsy, and tracheal collapse, although these are not inevitable and the list is not complete. Small-dog dental disease is also an important prevention issue. Veterinary examinations and documented parent health testing are essential.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Pomapoos can be affectionate, clever, adaptable companions, but the label does not guarantee a particular dog. Expect variation in size, coat, shedding, barking, and temperament; plan for regular grooming and small-dog dental care; use positive training and careful socialization; and verify the health and living conditions of both parents before acquiring a puppy.
