How Many Giraffe Species Are There? The Four Giraffa Species and Why Classification Changed

The IUCN now recognizes four giraffe species instead of one species with nine subspecies. Here is the evidence behind the change, the current species list and the conservation implications.

Scientists now recognize four giraffe species, not one: Northern giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis), Reticulated giraffe (Giraffa reticulata), Masai giraffe (Giraffa tippelskirchi) and Southern giraffe (Giraffa giraffa). The IUCN SSC Giraffe and Okapi Specialist Group’s 2024–2025 review places seven subspecies within that four-species framework. The change reflects converging genetic, genomic, anatomical and biogeographic evidence, and is intended to make conservation assessments more precise.

The four giraffe species at a glance

The following framework is the one recognized by the IUCN SSC Giraffe and Okapi Specialist Group after its taxonomic review. Population figures come from the Giraffe Conservation Foundation’s State of Giraffe 2025; they are estimates, not a single census conducted under identical conditions across Africa.

Species Scientific name Recognized subspecies or forms 2025 estimated population Reported trend or qualification
Northern giraffe Giraffa camelopardalis Kordofan, Nubian and West African giraffes 7,037 The report does not provide one uniform trend statement for all three forms.
Reticulated giraffe Giraffa reticulata No subspecies listed in the GCF summary 20,901 A single estimate for the species; confidence varies with survey access.
Masai giraffe Giraffa tippelskirchi Includes the Luangwa form in Zambia 43,926 Reported stable across Kenya, increasing in Rwanda and expanding in Zambia.
Southern giraffe Giraffa giraffa Angolan and South African giraffes 68,837 A reported 50% increase in five years, much of it attributed to improved survey coverage and awareness.

These totals should not be read as a ranking of conservation security. A larger estimated population can still face severe local losses, fragmented habitat or intense pressures that are not captured by a continent-wide number. The GCF notes that insecurity, restricted access and uneven survey coverage affect estimates in several regions.

Why giraffe classification changed

For decades, most references followed a one-species model: giraffes were treated as Giraffa camelopardalis with nine subspecies. That was also the framework used by the 2016 IUCN Red List assessment, which listed “giraffe” as Vulnerable. The 2025 specialist-group review did not discover new animals or increase the number of giraffes in the wild. It changed how existing diversity is interpreted.

An integrative taxonomic review

The IUCN SSC Giraffe and Okapi Specialist Group convened a Taxonomic Task Force in 2024 and 2025. It examined recent publications, original datasets and expert input using the group’s Traffic Light System for evaluating distinctiveness. Rather than relying on one visible trait, the review looked for agreement among independent evidence streams. Its conclusion was four species and seven subspecies.

The IUCN describes the result as a standardized framework for conservation work. It is not itself a set of completed, species-level Red List assessments. Those assessments still need to evaluate each species’ range, population trend, threats and extinction risk.

Genetic and genomic separation

Nuclear DNA and mitochondrial DNA analyses consistently found substantial differences among several giraffe lineages. A whole-genome study summarized by the Giraffe Conservation Foundation identified four highly distinct lineages and estimated that they diverged approximately 230,000–370,000 years ago. That interval is the study’s estimate, not a date independently recalculated by the IUCN in 2025. The GCF also reports that more than 1,000 tissue samples have been collected from major giraffe populations across Africa, providing unusually broad material for comparing lineages.

Genetic distinctiveness does not mean every individual is genetically identical within a species. It means that, across many samples and markers, the four regional lineages form consistently separated groups. This pattern is one reason the current framework is more than a relabeling based on appearance.

Skull and bone morphology

The review also considered physical anatomy. Researchers have documented differences in skull structure and bone shape among giraffes from different regions. Morphological measurements are useful because they test whether genetic groupings correspond to repeatable anatomical patterns. They also help evaluate museum specimens and historical material for which DNA may be unavailable.

Coat designs remain useful for identifying giraffes in the field, but the IUCN rationale does not treat spots alone as species boundaries. Spot color, shape and size can vary within populations and may change in appearance with age, lighting and seasonal condition. The classification rests on the combined evidence.

Geography and evolutionary isolation

Biogeography supplies the third major line of support. Giraffe populations are separated by natural features including major rivers, rift valleys and broad arid zones. Such barriers can restrict movement over long periods, allowing genetic and anatomical differences to accumulate. The four recognized species occupy geographically distinct regions, so their distributions make evolutionary separation plausible rather than arbitrary.

The four species and their constituent forms

Northern giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis)

Northern giraffe is the species associated with three named forms in the current framework: Kordofan, Nubian and West African giraffes. Their ranges are concentrated in different parts of northern and western sub-Saharan Africa, where civil insecurity and limited access can make surveys especially difficult. A single species-level total therefore combines populations that may experience very different local conditions.

The GCF’s 2025 estimate for Northern giraffes is shown in the table above. The report does not assign one trend to all three forms, so the figure should be treated as a combined estimate rather than evidence that every northern population is changing in the same direction.

Reticulated giraffe (Giraffa reticulata)

Reticulated giraffes are recognized as a separate species and are known for the sharply defined, pale network of lines around their darker patches. The GCF summary lists no subspecies within G. reticulata. Its principal range is in the Horn of Africa, especially areas of northern Kenya and neighboring regions.

The 2025 estimate is the species total in the table. As with the other species, the number reflects available surveys and can change when additional areas become accessible or methods improve; it is not a guaranteed count of every animal.

Masai giraffe (Giraffa tippelskirchi)

Masai giraffes occupy parts of Kenya and Tanzania and extend into neighboring countries. The GCF includes the Luangwa form in Zambia within this species. Its 2025 account reports a stable population across Kenya, growth in Rwanda and expansion into Zambia. Those statements describe different national or regional situations, not one uniform continental trend.

The species estimate in the table aggregates those areas. Cross-border movements and differences in monitoring mean that a change in one country can reflect both genuine population growth and animals being detected in newly surveyed habitat.

Southern giraffe (Giraffa giraffa)

Southern giraffe includes Angolan and South African giraffes. It occurs across a broad portion of southern Africa, from managed and private conservation areas to national parks and communal landscapes. The GCF reports a 50% increase over five years in its estimated number. The report attributes much of that apparent rise to better survey coverage and greater awareness, so it should not be interpreted as a 50% biological increase everywhere.

Improved monitoring is still valuable: it reveals animals that earlier surveys missed and gives managers better information. It also illustrates why population estimates from different years should not be compared without checking whether the survey area, method and access were comparable.

What the population numbers can—and cannot—tell you

The four figures in the 2025 GCF account are useful for showing that species differ greatly in estimated abundance. They are not equally precise measurements. Areas affected by armed conflict, difficult terrain or restricted entry may have sparse data, while intensively monitored parks can produce more complete counts.

  • Coverage: A newly surveyed region can raise an estimate even when the animals were present all along.
  • Security and access: Dangerous or inaccessible areas may be undercounted.
  • Method changes: Different aerial, ground or photographic survey methods can produce different detection rates.
  • Boundary changes: A revised species range can move animals from an old combined category into a newly defined one without any physical relocation.

For those reasons, the smallest number in the table should not automatically be treated as the species in the worst condition, and the largest number should not be treated as safe.

Why species-level recognition matters for conservation

When four biologically distinct lineages are pooled as one species, a large population can mask a much smaller one. A combined total may make losses in a restricted range look insignificant even though that lineage has few animals and limited room to recover. Separate species accounts force assessments to examine each range, threat profile and trend on its own terms.

The IUCN says taxonomic clarity is intended to support more accurate Red List assessments, targeted conservation action and coordinated management across national borders. Michael Brown, co-chair of the IUCN SSC Giraffe and Okapi Specialist Group, described the revision as “a globally standardised framework to inform conservation” in the IUCN’s 21 August 2025 announcement.

The next step is not to assign a new threat category automatically. Species-level Red List work must still assemble current population, distribution and threat evidence. The 2016 Vulnerable listing belongs to the former one-species framework and should not be presented as the current risk category for each of the four species.

Do the four species interbreed?

The Giraffe Conservation Foundation reports no evidence of natural wild interbreeding among the four geographically distinct species in the available observations. It also notes hybridization in zoos. This supports the view that wild populations are reproductively and geographically separated, but it is not proof that interbreeding is biologically impossible under every circumstance.

Captive hybrids can arise because zoos place animals together that would rarely meet in the wild. Their existence does not erase the genetic, anatomical and geographic differences used in the taxonomic review.

How to read older giraffe references

An older field guide may list one giraffe species and nine subspecies, especially if it follows the 2016 Red List or earlier taxonomic sources. That terminology reflects the framework available when the book was written. Newer references may use four species and seven subspecies following the IUCN specialist-group review.

When comparing books, databases or wildlife records, check the publication date and the taxonomic authority cited. A name change can alter totals, maps and conservation categories without indicating that animals vanished or appeared overnight.

What remains to be clarified

The four-species framework is a major advance in organizing evidence, but taxonomy and conservation assessment are different processes. The specialist group has recognized the units it considers distinct; detailed Red List assessments must still quantify extinction risk for each unit. Future genomic sampling, field surveys and monitoring may refine ranges, subspecies boundaries or population estimates.

That continuing work is normal in modern taxonomy. Classifications are hypotheses tested against better data, not permanent labels detached from evidence. For giraffes, the important change is that multiple independent datasets now point to the same four broad lineages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should a giraffe in a zoo be labeled by species or by the older nine-subspecies system?

Use the taxonomy adopted by the institution or database, and record the authority and publication date. A current label may use one of the four species, while an older record may retain the former nine-subspecies arrangement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the four-species decision automatically make every giraffe species endangered?

No. Recognition establishes taxonomic units; it does not assign new Red List categories. Each species requires a separate assessment of population, range, threats and trend.

Why can two reports give different totals for the same giraffe species?

Survey coverage, security, access, detection methods and revised range boundaries can all change an estimate. A higher later figure may partly reflect better counting rather than biological growth.
