There are five living rhinoceros species: the white and black rhinos of Africa, plus the greater one-horned, Javan and Sumatran rhinos of Asia. They do not share the same outlook. African black-and-white rhinos together numbered an estimated 23,885 at the end of 2023, while the Javan and Sumatran species survive in populations measured in dozens.
This guide identifies each species, explains where it lives, sets out the dated population estimates available from major conservation organizations, and shows why a rising total for African rhinos does not mean every rhino species is recovering.

The five living rhino species at a glance
“Rhino” is a common name for several related species, not one worldwide population. The five species generally recognized today are listed below. Population figures are estimates tied to particular years and sources; they are not live counts.

| Javan rhinoceros | Rhinoceros sondaicus | Asia: the remaining population is in Ujung Kulon National Park on Java | 50 in the International Rhino Foundation’s 2025 summary. | IUCN describes the species as at acute risk; the 2025 summary includes its Red List status. |
| Sumatran rhinoceros | Dicerorhinus sumatrensis | Asia: Sumatra and Borneo | 34–47 in the International Rhino Foundation’s 2025 summary. | IUCN describes the species as at acute risk; the 2025 summary includes its Red List status. |
The different dates and methods behind these figures mean they should not be added into one global total or treated as a single census. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) also warns that Red List statistics change when species are assessed, reassessed or reclassified taxonomically.

Where do rhinos live?
Living rhinos occur on two continents. Africa is home to the black and white species. Asia holds the greater one-horned, Javan and Sumatran species. Their ranges are not interchangeable: a population increase in one country or continent cannot be assumed to apply to another species.
Africa: black and white rhinos
The two African species are counted together in the IUCN figure available for this guide. That release reported 23,885 black and white rhinos combined in African range states at the end of 2023. It did not expose separate totals for Diceros bicornis and Ceratotherium simum, so assigning part of the combined number to either species would be misleading.
India and Nepal: greater one-horned rhinos
The greater one-horned rhino is an Asian species found in India and Nepal. IUCN reported approximately 4,018 animals at the end of 2023. The International Rhino Foundation’s 2025 “State of the Rhino” summary gives 4,075. Those numbers come from different publications and should be presented as separate estimates, not as proof that the population rose by 57 animals.

Java: the Javan rhino
WWF places the remaining Javan rhino population in Ujung Kulon National Park on Java. The 2025 International Rhino Foundation summary estimates 50 animals. A population this small is vulnerable to a single disease outbreak, natural disaster or loss of breeding animals, which is why IUCN describes the species as being at acute risk.
Sumatra and Borneo: the Sumatran rhino
WWF describes the Sumatran rhino’s range as Sumatra and Borneo. The 2025 International Rhino Foundation summary estimates only 34–47 animals. The range description covers two islands, but the estimate is a total for the species in that summary rather than a separate count for each island.
How many rhinos are left?
The most defensible answer depends on which species and which reporting date you mean. The following figures are the named estimates available from the cited 2024 and 2025 summaries.
| Figure | What it measures | Date and source | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 23,885 | Black and white rhinos combined across African range states | End of 2023; IUCN release published in 2024 | Do not split it into species totals without a separate assessment. |
| 2.4% | Change in the combined African black-and-white population from 2022 to 2023 | IUCN, 2024 | It describes the combined African total, not each species and not Asian rhinos. |
| 586 | Rhinos killed by poachers in Africa | Calendar year 2023; IUCN, 2024 | A reported annual mortality figure, not a percentage of the world population. |
| About 4,018 | Greater one-horned rhinos | End of 2023; IUCN release published in 2024 | A dated estimate for one Asian species. |
| 4,075 | Greater one-horned rhinos | International Rhino Foundation “State of the Rhino 2025” summary | A separate 2025 summary; do not calculate a trend from the difference alone. |
| 50 | Javan rhinos | International Rhino Foundation, 2025 summary | An estimate for the species, whose remaining population is in Ujung Kulon National Park. |
| 34–47 | Sumatran rhinos | International Rhino Foundation, 2025 summary | A range rather than a single point estimate. |
There is no single, current, methodologically uniform number that can be created by simply adding these entries. The African figure combines two species, the Asian figures come from different dates and publications, and the Javan and Sumatran estimates are reported as separate conservation summaries.

The Javan and Sumatran rhinos stand out for their extremely small estimated populations. IUCN’s 2024 overview described both as at acute risk. The 2025 International Rhino Foundation summary pairs their population estimates with Red List statuses, but categories can change when the IUCN assessment is updated.
The greater one-horned rhino has a much larger estimated population than either of those species, yet WWF lists it as Vulnerable rather than secure. A larger population does not remove threats to habitat or the effects of poaching.

The IUCN material used here reports the African black-and-white total and its year-to-year change, but the surfaced release does not provide species-specific population totals or a separate category for each African species. It is therefore more accurate to say that the combined African population rose 2.4% from 2022 to 2023 while poaching continued than to claim that both species are recovering at the same rate.
Why the African increase is not a universal recovery story
IUCN reported a mixed picture in 2024. The combined number of black and white rhinos in African range states increased 2.4% between 2022 and 2023, reaching 23,885 at the end of 2023. In the same calendar year, 586 rhinos were killed by poachers in Africa.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThese statistics answer different questions. The population figure is a net result after births, deaths, movements and counting uncertainty. The poaching figure records illegal killings. A net increase can coexist with severe losses, and an African trend cannot be transferred to the three Asian species. In particular, IUCN characterized the Javan and Sumatran rhinos as being at acute risk despite the positive African total.
What makes the five species different?
The clearest evidence-supported distinctions are their scientific names, continents and ranges, and the population estimates summarized above. Common names can also be confusing: “white” and “black” are two separate African species, while “greater one-horned” identifies an Asian species rather than a category that includes every one-horned rhino.
Use scientific names when precision matters
- Ceratotherium simum is the white rhinoceros.
- Diceros bicornis is the black rhinoceros.
- Rhinoceros unicornis is the greater one-horned rhinoceros.
- Rhinoceros sondaicus is the Javan rhinoceros.
- Dicerorhinus sumatrensis is the Sumatran rhinoceros.
Do not treat the species as interchangeable
A conservation statement about one species is not automatically a statement about the others. The greater one-horned rhino’s estimate of roughly four thousand animals does not describe Javan or Sumatran rhinos. Likewise, the 23,885 African estimate combines black and white rhinos and cannot be used to label either species individually.
How the five species are grouped
The simplest reliable way to organize the living rhinos is by continent and species name. Africa contributes two species, while Asia contributes three. That grouping answers the basic identification question without implying that all African rhinos or all Asian rhinos share one population trend.
Species names are more precise than broad labels. “African rhino” can mean either the black or white species, and “Asian rhino” can mean the greater one-horned, Javan or Sumatran species. A report that gives only a continental total may therefore conceal important differences between species. When comparing records, write the full common name and scientific name whenever a number or status is involved.
The number of living species is also distinct from the number of rhinos. Five species can contain tens of thousands of animals in one combined regional estimate and only a few dozen in another. It is also distinct from the number of locations: the Sumatran rhino is associated with Sumatra and Borneo, but its 34–47 estimate is a species total, not a separate count for each island.
What a population estimate does—and does not—tell you
A population estimate is a snapshot produced for a defined reporting period. It may combine field surveys, monitoring records and national or regional reports. The number can change when animals are born or die, when individuals move, when a survey reaches areas that were previously difficult to monitor, or when analysts revise the method. A change in a published figure is therefore not automatically a biological increase or decline.

Scope matters as much as the number. The 23,885 figure covers black and white rhinos together across African range states. The 4,018 figure concerns greater one-horned rhinos at the end of 2023. The 50 and 34–47 figures in the 2025 foundation summary concern the Javan and Sumatran species. These are different units, dates and publications, so presenting them in one addition problem would create false precision.

If a source gives “about 4,018,” retain the qualifier rather than implying that every individual was counted exactly.
How conservation figures are updated
Rhino numbers are estimates assembled from field surveys, monitoring and national or regional reporting. A number can change because animals were born or died, because survey coverage improved, or because experts revised the assessment. That is why the year, organization and scope belong beside every figure.
IUCN’s Red List “Summary Statistics” explains that totals and categories change as species are assessed, reassessed and revised taxonomically. The IUCN Red List guidelines identified version 16 as current in March 2024. A current Red List record should therefore be checked before quoting a category as though it were permanent.
How to read a population estimate responsibly
- Identify the species. Check whether the number covers one species or a combined group, such as the African black-and-white total.
- Record the date. “At the end of 2023” is not the same as a 2025 summary.
- Name the source. IUCN and the International Rhino Foundation may publish different estimates because their reports can use different methods or reporting windows.
- Keep ranges as ranges. The Sumatran estimate is 34–47, not a precise count of 40.5.
- Avoid unsupported trends. The difference between 4,018 and 4,075 greater one-horned rhinos is not a measured increase unless the underlying methods and dates are directly comparable.
What the numbers mean for each species
White rhinoceros
The white rhinoceros is one of the two African species. Its current species-specific population was not stated in the IUCN release used here; it is included in the combined 23,885 African black-and-white estimate at the end of 2023. The 2.4% increase applies to that combined total, not to a separately measured white-rhino trend.
Black rhinoceros
The black rhinoceros is the second African species. As with the white rhino, the cited IUCN release reported the two species together rather than supplying a separate number for black rhinos. The 586 poaching deaths reported for Africa in 2023 are an Africa-wide rhino figure and should not be reassigned to this species alone.
Greater one-horned rhinoceros
This Asian species occurs in India and Nepal. IUCN’s end-of-2023 estimate was about 4,018; the International Rhino Foundation’s 2025 summary lists 4,075. WWF describes its Red List position as Vulnerable. Because the estimates come from different publications, readers should cite the source and date instead of presenting the two values as a precise population trajectory.
Javan rhinoceros
The Javan rhino’s remaining population is concentrated in Ujung Kulon National Park on Java, according to WWF. The 2025 International Rhino Foundation summary gives an estimate of 50. IUCN’s overview places the species at acute risk, making it one of the two species in this guide with populations counted in dozens rather than thousands.
Sumatran rhinoceros
The Sumatran rhino is reported from Sumatra and Borneo. The International Rhino Foundation’s 2025 summary estimates 34–47 animals, the smallest numerical range among the five estimates presented here. IUCN also described this species as at acute risk.

Questions readers often ask about the five species
Are there five rhinos or five rhino species?
There are five generally recognized living rhino species. The number of individual animals is much larger than five and varies by species, survey date and source. Saying “five rhinos” when you mean “five species” mixes taxonomy with population size.
Are black and white rhinos the same animal?
No. They are two distinct African species with different scientific names: Diceros bicornis is the black rhinoceros and Ceratotherium simum is the white rhinoceros. The IUCN figure cited here combines them for reporting purposes, but the combined statistic does not turn them into one species.
Is the greater one-horned rhino found only in India?
The cited WWF and IUCN summaries describe the species as occurring in India and Nepal. A reference to India alone is therefore incomplete for the range given in these sources.
Where is the last Javan rhino population?
WWF places the remaining population in Ujung Kulon National Park on Java. The 2025 foundation summary estimates 50 animals. That is a species estimate for the remaining population, not a count for every historical location where Javan rhinos once occurred.
Does the Sumatran estimate mean there are animals on both islands?
WWF describes the range as Sumatra and Borneo, while the 2025 summary gives a total estimate of 34–47. The cited material does not provide a separate island-by-island breakdown, so it is safer not to assign a portion of the range estimate to either island.
Can I add all the published estimates to get a world total?
No. The African number combines two species, the greater one-horned figures come from different publications, and the Javan and Sumatran figures are from a 2025 summary. Different dates, methods and scopes make a simple sum misleading.
Why do two sources give 4,018 and 4,075 greater one-horned rhinos?
They are separate estimates: IUCN reported about 4,018 at the end of 2023, while the International Rhino Foundation’s 2025 summary lists 4,075. Without directly comparable survey methods and reporting windows, the difference cannot be described as a measured increase.
Which source should I use for a current Red List category?
Use the current species record on the IUCN Red List and note its assessment date. IUCN explains that categories and summary totals can change after assessment, reassessment or taxonomic revision. The categories in an older fact sheet should not be treated as permanent.
Common mistakes when answering “How many rhino species are there?”
- Counting “rhino” as one species: the name refers to five living species.
- Calling the African total a species count: 23,885 combines black and white rhinos.
- Mixing years without labels: every estimate needs its reporting date and source.
- Turning two estimates into a trend: 4,018 and 4,075 for greater one-horned rhinos are not automatically comparable measurements.
- Using historical fact sheets as current counts: older IUCN, WWF and ARKive “Amazing Species” sheets contain historical information and should not replace current assessments.
- Assuming a continental trend applies everywhere: Africa’s reported increase does not describe the Javan, Sumatran or greater one-horned rhino populations.
- Rounding away a range: replacing 34–47 with one invented midpoint hides the uncertainty in the source estimate.
- Confusing a location with a population: a species may be associated with several countries or islands while a cited figure covers the species as a whole.
The practical answer
If you need a one-sentence identification, say: five living rhino species are generally recognized—white and black rhinos in Africa, and greater one-horned, Javan and Sumatran rhinos in Asia. If you need a conservation answer, add the date and scope: African black and white rhinos together were estimated at 23,885 at the end of 2023, the greater one-horned rhino at roughly 4,018 in IUCN’s end-of-2023 release (4,075 in a 2025 foundation summary), the Javan rhino at 50, and the Sumatran rhino at 34–47 in that 2025 summary.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many rhino species are alive today?
Five living species are generally recognized: white and black rhinos in Africa, and greater one-horned, Javan and Sumatran rhinos in Asia.
What is the rarest rhino species in these estimates?
The Sumatran rhino has the smallest cited range, at 34–47 animals in the International Rhino Foundation’s 2025 summary. The Javan rhino is estimated at 50, so both survive in populations measured in dozens.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

IUCN reported 23,885 black and white rhinos combined across African range states at the end of 2023. The release did not provide separate species totals.
Are rhino population figures exact?
No. They are estimates for defined dates and areas. Survey coverage, births, deaths, movements and revised methods can all change a published number.
Is the African rhino population increasing?
The combined black-and-white total rose 2.4% from 2022 to 2023 according to IUCN, but 586 rhinos were killed by poachers in Africa during 2023. That combined trend should not be generalized to every species.
Where do Javan rhinos live now?
WWF places the remaining population in Ujung Kulon National Park on Java.

Why should the 4,018 and 4,075 estimates not be compared as growth?
They come from different publications and reporting contexts. Without matching methods and dates, their difference is not a measured population increase.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: five living rhino species are recognized. Keep every population estimate tied to its species, geographic scope, source and date: the African black-and-white total was 23,885 at the end of 2023, while the 2025 summary listed 50 Javan rhinos and 34–47 Sumatran rhinos.
