A broader dataset that also counts tuna-like species puts the 2024 total above 7.1 million metric tonnes. These figures use different definitions of “tuna,” so the scope matters.
How much tuna is caught worldwide each year?
The best current headline figure is 5.8 million tonnes for 2024, covering major commercial oceanic tunas. The ISSF’s January 2026 status report gives a 2020–2024 annual average of 5,283,800 tonnes for the same category. Annual figures can be revised as fisheries organizations update their data.
A separate FIRMS/Zenodo dataset reports more than 7.1 million metric tonnes for 2024, but it has broader coverage: 15 tuna species plus tuna-like species. The two totals are not competing estimates of an identical catch; they count different groups of fish.
Which tuna species are caught the most?
Skipjack is the largest part of the major-commercial-tuna catch. The ISSF’s approximate breakdown of its 2020–2024 average is:

Skipjack and yellowfin together account for about 88% of that five-year average. The percentages are approximate and describe the ISSF major-commercial category, not the broader tuna-and-tuna-like total.
Why do published tuna catch totals differ?
“Tuna” can refer to different sets of species in fisheries statistics. The FAO identifies seven principal commercial tuna species: albacore, bigeye, skipjack, yellowfin, and three bluefin species. Other datasets include additional tuna species and tuna-like fish, which raises the reported total.

Geography also matters. Regional fisheries management organizations report catches for their own areas, not for the entire world. For example, a WCPFC scientific summary reports approximately 1.636 million tonnes of skipjack, 746,000 tonnes of yellowfin, 146,000 tonnes of bigeye, and 96,000 tonnes of albacore in its western and central Pacific assessment. Those regional figures must not be added or presented as a global total without checking their scope and overlap.
When comparing figures, check four things:
- Which species are included, including whether tuna-like species count.
- Whether the figure covers the world or a particular ocean or management region.
- Which calendar year it describes.
- Whether the data are preliminary or have been revised.
Can you convert the catch into a number of individual tuna?
Not reliably from these totals alone. The reported figures are tonnes, not a count of fish. Converting tonnes into individual tuna would require the weight of the fish caught, and that varies by species and fish size. The totals therefore answer how much tuna is caught by weight, not how many individual fish.

How to read a historical tuna catch figure
For a year-by-year comparison, use a dataset that provides annual catches and record its species and geographic filters. The broader FIRMS/Zenodo series and FAO’s Tuna Atlas are potential sources, but their totals should not be compared with the ISSF figure unless the scope is matched. Annual values may also change as regional organizations revise landings.
