How Much Can a Bumblebee Remember With a Tiny Brain?

Bumblebees can retain learned colour, odor and social associations, sometimes for days. Here is what the experiments show—and what they do not prove about tiny brains.

Bumblebees can remember learned associations that help them forage. In controlled experiments, they retained links between flower colours and rewards, odors and nectar, and social cues and outcomes. Some bees still chose the trained colour two or three days later, while socially reliable information remained useful for at least four to eight hours in another test.

Those intervals describe particular species, training schedules and laboratory tasks—not a single memory limit for every bumblebee. The evidence shows flexible learning in a very small nervous system, but it does not demonstrate human-like autobiographical memories or prove that overall brain size alone determines performance.

What a bumblebee can remember

A bumblebee does not need to memorize every flower it encounters. Foraging rewards make certain cues valuable: a colour, an odor or information supplied by another bee can predict nectar. Experiments test whether a bee changes its later choice after learning one of those cue–reward relationships.

  • Visual cues: Bombus terrestris workers learned that particular colours predicted a reward and retained the discrimination in tests conducted days later.
  • Odor cues: Bombus impatiens learned odors associated with nectar. The interval between rewarded trials changed how well the association was acquired.
  • Social information: Foragers learned whether social or floral information was reliable, then adjusted their choices as the delay after training increased.
  • Task rules: Learning one task can interfere with performance on another, showing that memory is affected by context and competing information rather than stored as one unlimited record.

These findings concern associative memory: a bee has learned that a sensory cue predicts a consequence. They should not be translated into a claim that a bumblebee replays an episode in the human sense.

How long do those memories last?

The best-supported durations depend on the information and the test design. Colour associations have been tested after two or three days. Social and floral information has been tested after delays of hours. A result from one protocol cannot be used as a universal “bumblebee memory span.”

Colour memory for two to three days

In a 2017 study of Bombus terrestris, better retention of a trained colour association two days after learning was correlated with greater microglomerular density in a visual-association region of the mushroom bodies. The association was statistical: the authors did not establish that the neural density caused better memory. The study report is indexed by PubMed.

A separate 2021 experiment trained individual bees with five rewarding and five unrewarding colours, then tested them three days later. The bees showed high accuracy for the trained colour under that design. The three-day result is evidence of retention of that learned discrimination, not proof that every bumblebee remembers every colour for three days. Nature Communications describes the protocol and results.

Social information for hours

In a comparison of social and floral information, bees learned both types at similar speeds. At tests four and eight hours after training, socially reliable information was retained longer than comparable floral information. Choices also shifted with the reliability of the cue and the time since learning. The experiment therefore measured both memory and the bee’s sensitivity to whether information had proved trustworthy. The 2022 study is available through PubMed.

Why spacing feeding trials changes memory

Learning speed and later retention are different measurements. A bee can acquire an association quickly yet show weaker performance later, or learn more slowly while forming a durable association.

Wright and colleagues tested odor–nectar conditioning in Bombus impatiens by varying the interval between rewarded trials. Compared with a one-minute interval, the average discrimination index was 65% higher with three-minute spacing and 129% higher with five-minute spacing. These percentages describe that experiment’s acquisition protocol; they are not a claim that everyday bumblebee memory improves by a fixed percentage whenever flowers are encountered farther apart. The odor-conditioning study is indexed by PubMed.

The practical interpretation is that training history matters. Closely repeated rewards are not equivalent to rewards separated by short pauses, even when the total number of trials is the same. Any comparison of bee memory should therefore report the number of trials, the interval between them and the delay before testing.

What the main experiments actually compared

Study focus Species or subjects Information learned When memory was tested Main result Important qualification
Visual association and mushroom-body structure Bombus terrestris Colour linked to reward Two days Better retention correlated with higher microglomerular density Correlation does not show that density caused performance
Odor spacing effect Bombus impatiens Odor linked to nectar Acquisition measured during training Discrimination index 65% higher at three-minute spacing and 129% higher at five-minute spacing than at one minute Percentages apply only to that experiment’s schedule
Multi-colour visual task Individual bees; species and protocol reported in the paper Five rewarding and five unrewarding colours Three days High accuracy for the trained colour A specific laboratory discrimination, not a general memory clock
Social versus floral information Foraging bumblebees Reliability of social and floral cues Four and eight hours Socially reliable information persisted longer; choices changed with reliability and delay Retention depended on cue type and reliability
Two-context learning Bombus impatiens workers Feeder and nest-entrance tasks After learning the second task The second task affected performance on the first; larger workers learned each task faster in that experiment Shows interference and body-size effects under one setup

Memory is not one single capacity

The two-context experiment illustrates why “How much can it remember?” has no one-number answer. Bombus impatiens workers learned a feeder task and a nest-entrance task. Learning the second task changed how they performed the first, an example of interference. Larger workers learned each task faster in that experiment, but the result does not mean body size universally predicts memory in all bees or all tasks. The Journal of Experimental Biology paper details the two-context design.

Interference can arise because a new rule competes with an old one, because the bee must switch contexts, or because the test requires a different response. Consequently, a low score on a later trial does not automatically mean that the original association was erased. It may reflect competition between memories or a changed motivation and sensory setting.

Does a tiny brain limit bumblebee memory?

Bumblebee brains are small, but the relevant question is how their neural circuits are organized and how the task engages them. Mushroom bodies integrate sensory information and are involved in learned associations. The colour study found a relationship between visual-association microglomerular density and two-day retention, while explicitly stopping short of a causal claim.

Recent evidence also argues against treating brain size as a simple intelligence meter. A 2026 PNAS study summary covering 2,141 individual bees reported a relationship between olfactory-centre size and olfactory learning, but not the same relationship for visual learning. The summary does not provide the exact number of each species, so the total should not be presented as a bumblebee-only sample. Its pattern suggests that brain regions may matter differently depending on the sensory system. The PNAS study summary is available at this DOI.

In other words, a larger structure may be relevant to one kind of learning without predicting another. The available evidence does not support the shortcut “bigger brain equals better memory” or “tiny brain equals simple memory.”

Do age and caste change learning?

Life stage and caste are additional variables. A 2026 study of visual learning and brain morphology across Bombus impatiens life stages reported that queens and gynes performed similarly, and both performed better than workers in that experiment. The finding concerns the tested visual task and the compared life stages; it should not be generalized to every memory system or to all bumblebee species. PubMed provides the study record.

Differences between queens, gynes and workers could reflect development, physiology, experience or task-specific motivation. Without testing those factors separately, performance alone cannot identify which mechanism produced the difference.

What these findings mean for foraging

A learned colour or odor can help a bumblebee make a more efficient choice on a later visit. Social information can also remain useful when it has proved reliable. This is valuable because flowers vary in reward, and a bee benefits from biasing its search toward cues that previously predicted nectar.

Still, laboratory conditioning simplifies the field. Real flowers differ in shape, scent, colour, handling time, weather and competition. A bee may encounter several cues at once, and a reward can change as nectar is depleted. The experiments establish that bumblebees can retain specific associations under controlled conditions; they do not measure a fixed number of flowers that an individual can remember in nature.

How to interpret a claim about bumblebee memory

  1. Identify the information type. Colour, odor, social reliability and a motor task engage different sensory and behavioral systems.
  2. Separate acquisition from retention. A percentage measured during training is not the same as accuracy measured hours or days later.
  3. Check the delay. “Three days” and “eight hours” are not interchangeable endpoints, and neither is a lifetime guarantee.
  4. Check the species and subjects. Results from Bombus terrestris may not transfer directly to Bombus impatiens, queens, gynes or workers.
  5. Check the training schedule. Trial spacing, number of rewards and unrewarded choices can change the result.
  6. Distinguish correlation from cause. A neural measurement associated with performance does not prove that it produced the memory.
  7. Avoid anthropomorphic wording. “Remembered a trained association” is supported; claims about conscious human-like recollection are not established by these tests.

The clearest answer to the original question

With a very small brain, a bumblebee can learn and retain useful information about colours, odors, social cues and task rules. Under published laboratory protocols, some colour associations remained accurate after two or three days, while social information remained influential for four to eight hours. The duration and strength depend on what was learned, how it was learned, the bee’s species and life stage, and what competing information arrived afterward.

That is a substantial memory ability for a pollinator, but it is not one universal capacity that can be reduced to a single number.
